Fried Apples

Every year on our birthday we get to pick a special meal for Mama to prepare for us. This is part of my special birthday meal. I always go for a full country breakfast, served at suppertime. Homemade biscuits, country ham, hash brown casserole, scrambled eggs, bacon, and these special fried apples.

Of course, no one person can actually manage to eat even a portion of everything prepared, but it sure does lay out for a grand looking meal!

You will need: Apples (Golden Delicious), Apple Juice, Sugar, Corn Starch, Cinnamon, and Allspice.

If you’ve never used allspice in your apple dishes, you are missing out! What allspice does is make the cinnamon *pop* in your recipes. It simply amplifies the cinnamon flavor. I like to add a pinch of it (a generous pinch) whenever cinnamon is called for in addition to the cinnamon.

Cut your apples in wedges. Just leave the skin on, it is wonderful in this recipe.

Don’t worry, it will be nice and tender when they are done!

Pour apple juice in skillet.

Add apples in a single layer and bring heat up to a medium low to medium. You want these to just simmer until the apples are fork tender. Keep an eye on these while you do the next steps. You’ll need to be handy to turn them a few times in order to have them cook evenly.

While those are cooking, put corn starch in a medium sized bowl.
Add Allspice…..
And cinnamon……..
and sugar.
Don’t you just love my grammar?
Stir that up with a wire whisk.
Once your apples are fork tender, remove them from the pan using a slotted spoon so the juice remains in the pan. Now, you really do want these fork tender, not cooked to the point of surrender like we southerners have a tendency to do to fruits and veggies.
Just set them aside in a bowl, big enough to stir a bit because we are about to pour a sauce over them.
That hot apple juice in your skillet is now going to be poured into your bowl of dry ingredients…
and whisk that for all you’re worth!
Until you get all of the lumps and such out.
Pour that back in your skillet.
Cook this on medium heat until it gets bubbly and thickens.
Let me tell ya, one minute it will be runny and then two seconds later it will be THICK. So pay attention!
Pour this ooey goodness over your apples.
Stir it up until you have this magnificent dish.
Here is where you have a dilemma. If you made these while your family was at home, they are likely standing over you right now with forks in hand. HOWEVER, if you are alone in the house, you COULD eat them and wash all the dishes real quick. No one would ever have to know. Just say you used a new apple air freshener!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups apple juice4 large golden delicious apples, unpeeled and cut into wedges
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 4 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, combine the apple juice and sliced apples. Heat on medium until apples are fork tender, turning often to enable even cooking. Be careful not to overcook apples. Remove apples from juice with slotted spoon and place in large bowl.
  2. In another bowl, combine all dry ingredients and stir with wire whisk until well blended. Pour hot apple juice into dry mixture. Whisk vigorously until lumps are gone. Pour this mixture back into the skillet and heat on medium heat, whisking constantly, until bubbly and thick.
  3. Remove from heat and pour over apples in bowl. Stir until apples are evenly coated.

    Hi Christy,
Have you ever made fried apple pies?
(Of course you have… silly me)
Are the ingredients used in this recipe the same as used in fried apple pies? How do you make the dough for the fried pies?
Gotta know from you how to do this!

  25. Annarose

I made these to go with dinner tonight. I usually make a recipe that has a bit of butter and uses brown sugar and flour. The other recipe is good too, but I adore all the wonderful sauce with this recipe! They were so good, my husband and I would have finished the whole pot if I hadn’t taken it away so we can have leftovers tomorrow. I tweaked it a little bit, partly out of necessity. We had some white grape juice languishing in the fridge so I used that instead of the apple juice (you couldn’t tell it wasn’t apple), and I made the sauce a bit different. I held back 1/2 cup of the juice and stirred the dry ingredients into that in a measuring cup, then poured it right into the pan after removing the apples. Also cooked the apples in a sauce pan with a lid so I didn’t have to get my big skillet dirty. Regardless of how it gets assembled, this recipe is a winner for sure!

These apples are awesome…and even better with some butter melted into the sauce. I do that with Cracker Barrel fried apples too. I know…gilding the lily, but there isn’t anything that a little butter or bacon grease doesn’t improve :0)

  27. Jeanne

Christy my doctor will love you. I made these with Splenda and they gave my oatmeal a fabulous topping! Chlosterol dropping as we speak:)

  28. Nicole

  37. Jill

Does it have to be Golden Delicious apples or can you use any kind?

  38. I am so happy that I found this recipe! I live in California, the land without Cracker Barrel, so whenever I am lucky enough to visit I must buy fried apples. Now I can make them. (I am not sure if that is really a good thing) I like to put fried apples on my biscuit … it’s like dessert!

  39. Regina Fischer

I will have to try this recipe for sure…. I make mine with butter, brown sugar and let it caramelize and then add the apples to it….

  40. Christi M.

I am always counting calories so I’m unable to try a lot of your recipes so I just drool at the pictures…hehe. However I made these yesterday with the local apples I bought at the farmers market. I was also out of cornstarch so I just used double the amount of flour. Now my sauce wasn’t as smooth but they were delicious with my french toast this morning. I may not be able to eat apple pie but this honestly helped my cravings for an apple dessert with around 90 calories a serving! I’m a UNA alumni so I hope to get to go to your program in November it sounds like fun.

  41. Kat

I just HAD to print this one out – Fried Apples are my husbands favorite! When we get to go to Cracker Barrel there is no doubt in anyone’s mind what side he is going to get ……….. Fried Apples!

Now I just might be able to make them for him at home – Thanks so much.

  42. Kacey

Wow! These apples are soooo yummy and my house smells heavenly!! Thank you!!!! :)

  43. Heidi
