Rhyming Broccoli Salad

Today I am posting a special treat. Awesome Broccoli salad, and rhymes that are neat.
You see, amidst all the rushing and work, I find myself bored for some fun and some perks. So I set to rhyming a post now and then, it is not a waste if it makes me grin!
Yes, I suppose I am easily amused.
But life is more fun if you live it enthused.
For this yummy dish, ingredients are an ease. First you’ll need broccoli and sunflower seeds. Add mayonnaise, vinegar too. Toss in some raisins and sugar will do. And now to improve this vegetarian dish – buy lots of bacon per carnivore’s wish!
Wash and separate, head from the stalk. The chopping is next, the part I usually balk…
But now I don’t fret coz choppin’s a breeze, I use the food processor Hamilton Beach sent to me!

Except for the florettes, I chop them by hand. They look so pretty, I knew you’d all understand.
Now, with all that broccoli in a big old bowl, add in chopped onion and away we go!
Toss in some raisins…
and kernels of sun ..
Add cooked, crumbled bacon and the salad is done!
Whoops! We forgot to add in the dressing. Mayo, vinegar..
and sugar’s a blessing! Mix them all up til it’s good and combined..
Pour over our salad , it’ll be sublime!
You’re lucky you saw this dish all completed…
It was all i could do to keep it uneated

Yummy! My grandmother ALWAYS makes this broccoli salad and it is always a hit. I like to use the golden raisins instead cause I never use them for anything else…hehe. I have never added sunflower seeds but I will have to try that next time!
I have to agree with Megan on using the golden raisins. That’s how I’ve eaten this salad too. I can’t say I’m 100% certain because it’s been awhile since I’ve eaten it, but I believe the person who made the dish for me also added purple grapes. I can’t believe I liked this salad because the ingredients are so unusual together but I was sooooo glad I tried it and I loved it!
I started making this salad a couple of months ago, and it has fast become our favorite! I also use the golden raisins too. I think they have a sweeter taste, and I’m all for sweetness.
My sister, who says that if God wanted her to eat green stuff, He would have made it taste like chocolate, has eaten the salad, and has even had 2nds.
For our thanksgiving dinner, my husband cut up the broccoli, which was really nice! He is better than the food processor, and much cuter too! (Of course, I don’t have a Hamilton Beach Food Processor!)
Do you think they’d send me one?
Oh, I think I’ve had this salad before! If it’s the one I’m thinking of, I absolutely love it! Way cute rhyming, by the way. I don’t think I’m creative enough to rhyme an entire recipe, that’s pretty impressive!
LOVE the rhyming. I will try this salad. I have had it before but have never made it.
I make this too, only I use pecans and instead of sugar, splenda.
One of my very favorites!

I made this salad last night. I’ve had it before and really liked it but never made it. The one I have had before had halved red seedless grapes in it which was very good. I didn’t have sunflower seeds so I used walnuts which I chopped up because I had some in the freezer and I also used golden raisins because I had those and it came out awesome. My husband loved it so much he finished it all off last night and wants me to make it weekly! Thanks for the yummy recipe.

I made this for Easter, and it is beyond delicious! This is a party in your MOUTH. It’s not just great tasting, it’s great TEXTURE. I will definitely be adding this to my regular line-up of recipes. Next time I will try light mayo, and possibly a sugar alternative. (I’m not a big Splenda fan, but I have a few friends who’ve been recommending a couple of other ones I might try.) Thanks, Christy, for another fantastic recipe!
I made this for Easter and it was a HUGE hit!! Absolutely delish! I left out the bacon and added some shredded cheese. Yummy! There is a restaurant in Bell Buckle, TN (if you ever get out this way… go there!) that serves a salad similar to this and this is the closest recipe i have ever had! Thank you so much for sharing (and making ME look like a good cook)!
A lady at work use to make this salad and I really liked it but never at a recipe for it. Now I do. Loved your rhyming.
Loved the rhyme, Christy, and the ingredients are on my list for a trip to the store tomorrow. I’m not sure what I’ll put in the basket to equal “4-5 chopped broccoli,” so I’m asking for some help. Is this bunches? Cups? Handsful? Betcha you’ll even be able to rhyme the answer. =-)
This is one of my most favorite salads and is a hit anytime I make it! I’ve made it just like your recipe, as well as another way that I thought that I’d share! Instead of raisins, try using died cranberries, and in place of the homemade dressing, use Kraft Creamy Poppyseed dressing. This second way does make it a little more expensive, but is definitely delicious as well! Either way you make it your in for a treat!
I have had this same kind of salad, but we used Cucumber Ranch dressing for it instead of the mayonnaise mixture. It’s really good that way too and quick and easy. Thanks for all the step-by-step directions. They help me want to cook more than just seeing a recipe.
‘Sounds so yummy
‘Cause I like brocolli
I’ll make it for me
And eat it with glee
And the vitamin C
Thank you to thee
I love broccoli salad! I use dried cranberries like the other reader mentioned. And I’ve been adding a little bit of mini shell pasta too. I could eat a ton of it.
I love this salad and it is my brother-in-law’s favorite. I usualy make it when we have a Mexican casserol. I use pecans (pe-cons because my gradmother says a pe-con is a nut and a Pe-can goes under the bed at night). It is an easy salad and it just gets better the next day if there is any left. Yummy!
She cooks, takes care of kids, write AND rhymes? Is there anything our Christy Jordan CAN’T do???? hehe
Well, my Northern roots are showing…this salad doesn’t exactly fit in my repertoire of foods I’d be willing to try. BUT, I have yet to try one of SP’s dishes that I didn’t like, so I’d have to say that were I to try your rhyming salad I’d probably be pleasantly surprised and you’d find me hiding in the corner licking the bowl clean. hehehe
Michael, my sister-in-law sent me the recipe and I put it away (so I’d have it when she called and said, “I can’t find my recipe, can you read it to me?”) I had NO intentions of making it. Had it at a friend’s and asked for the recipe. I checked and sure enough it was the same one I WAS NOT GOING TO MAKE BECAUSE IT DIDN”T SOUND LIKE SOMETHING I WANTED TO TRY. I told my friend and the same kind of thing had happened to her. Ever since then (about 15 years ago) it has been one of my favorite and most requested recipes.
We must have ESP or something…… I made a broccoli salad last week but put 3 cheese Tortellini pasta in mine. It also called for a cole slaw dressing (I make my own). I made my oatmeal cookies and the next day I see you had posted your oatmeal cookie recipe!!!
Love the Southern Plate!!!!!!
This is so weird…:)
I have a recipe for this that is similar.
Mine uses halved grapes instead of raisins, green onions instead or with regular onions and mine adds celery to it instead of nuts.
I also use 1/4 mayo and the rest plain yogurt along with the vinegar and you can’t tell the yogurt is in there.
This is one of my favorite things to eat in this world. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! The combination of nuts, bacon, raisins and broccoli is amazing!
Luvin’ the rhyme Christy…. You are too dadgum cute, my fellow Chuck Taylor wearing friend!!!!
LOL…you just make my day! Christy, I just love your poem post! Too sweet and funny!
Blessing from Louisiana!
Loved! that salad at WalMart! I always tried to get over there by 4:30 because it would be gone after this. Why they quit selling it, I’ll never know. Even wrote hdqtrs. about this. Thank you, thank you for the recipe! Will plan to make this for sure!

I take pleasure in reading these articles becuase they aid me with the flash or shockwave games developing that I do rather a lot of, it’s a shame all the rubbish comments that these internet sites are continuing to accumulate though, they should fix this.
I have been making this for years. I can tell you that a really good edition to the salad is raisins, multi-colored are the prettiest. It adds a really good pop of flavor to this sweet salad.
Love this salad. Have made it all kinds of ways. I made it today with grapes instead of raisins and walnuts instead of sunflower seeds. If I’m in a hurry, I use the broccoli salad mix instead of chopping broccoli. Anything is good with that dressing and bacon!
Well, Christy…It’s very late on Easter Eve…Earlier, I realized that I forgot broccoli. At first I thought I was out of luck…Then, never fear…I just threw this together with fresh spinach leaves…It’s delicious!
Blessings,
Kristine
[...] Shields Also, had a cooking presentation to do for a culinary class I took in Fall 2010. Made the broccoli salad and won 1st place in the salad division! Thank you [...]
Oh Christy you’re such a mess !(and I mean that in a good way !) I love this salad and could eat it every day but never knew it could rhyme ! Thanks for the smiles you bring us every day !
Thank you Christy for the great recipe and quick responds!! I’m a big fan!! I going to try this in a few days!! Thank you!!
I’ve been making this salad since 2006 – it is great! I put dried cranberries instead of raisins because my daughter doesn’t like raisins. I bet it would be good to add some pineapple too! I’m so glad you have the receipe on Southern Plate Christy – now I can’t loose it! lol
It is one of my favorites too!!! I am going to try it with pineapples.

Have you not been posting lately, or have I just screwed up? Haven’t heard from you since Easter and am missing you. Tried to subscripe, but see I’m still a member. Maybe I’ll be hearing from you soon. Btw, love the broccoli salad recipe.
Mmmm, I am going to make this to go with our Christmas dinner to, sounds good, except for the raisons in it. I like them but not in salad… anyway, I think I will grate some cheddar in it as well, . Thanks. Hope you and your family have a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!
Please try golden raisins in this yummy salad. They are much better. They are softer and more mild in flavor!!
Christy
I want to make this next week for a ladies nite out that I am hosting and would like to know who many this recipe will serve?? I need to serve approx. 20 ladies..
I love the rhyming! Too cute!!! Reminds me of the Dr. Seuss books my toddler makes me read
. I had never tried broccoli salad before until my husband and I went to Derby Dinner Playhouse for dinner and a show. They served it there and I decided it was most excellent. Unfortunately, I’m the only person in my house that will eat it
. The only difference that I can tell between their version and yours is that they used golden raisins. I really can’t wait for a big summer family cookout so I can make this and take it
.
I love all your recipes, and you are so funny. Here in the south we go barefoot and call everyone “honey”. When I cook as you do, my family is treated, but if I had to rhyme, I too would make up words like “uneated” lol!! Love to you and yours, from Arkansas!
Fantastic recipe!!! Thank you!!
I am so glad you liked it Helen!!

Making this tonight….again!!! I love this stuff!! Since I’m the only person in the house that will eat it, that simply means more for me!!!
I like the way you think Lacey!!
