Sugar Free Cappuccino Mix

This mix is special for two very important reasons.

1. It is a coffee drink!!

2. Thanks to sugar free products, I can actually drink it!

What a perfect gift for that person who is dieting or has to watch their sugar. At last, something for us!

Most of you don’t know that I have issues with sugar. I have to really watch it and generally avoid it altogether except in very small amounts. Come January, after all of our holiday eating transgressions are over, I’m going to bring you some special recipes I use when I want a special treat. Low sugar, no sugar, and a weee bit healthy – but don’t let that scare you, they are all still gonna be awful good, I promise you!

Tomorrow I will draw a name from the comments left on each of my gift mix posts and mail them one of each of my gift mixes in one of those red plastic dishpan that I love so much! To enter, simply comment on any gift mix post. One entry per comment!

You’ll need: Instant coffee, No Sugar Added Nesquik (or any brand no sugar added chocolate drink mix), Powdered coffee creamer, cinnamon, nutmeg, and Splenda (not pictured). I use generic splenda.

Now personally, I don’t care for nutmeg and I never have. However, I bought it just to use for this recipe and decided I’d put it in as the original recipe called for. I figured I’d change my mind and perhaps realize that I hadn’t given nutmeg a good chance before. Guess what? I learned that I just really don’t like nutmeg. If you do, that’s great! If you don’t, I would encourage you to leave it out and add more cinnamon in its place.

Put all of your ingredients in a bowl in the quantities listed in the recipe below. I have tweaked this recipe a bit as I felt it didn’t have enough creamer in it.

Stir that up well and you’ve made cappuccino mix!

Of course, I am doubling this because y’all know how I like to double things!

I just put mine in a little half pint jar and cut a circle of Christmas fabric with pinking shears to put under the screw on ring. I have tags available as well to put on this!

  1. I have watched and kept up with all of your gift mix posts and have incorporated some of them into our holiday baskets. I believe this one will end up being my absolute favorite!

  2. Michele

Love the fact that this one is sugar free!

  3. nmsusieq

Thank you again! These mixes are going to finish off my Christmas shopping just wonderfully! Especially the chocolate gravy mix. I have a sister who used to live in Arkansas and loved chocolate gravy. Thank you so much. You are top notch in my book.

  4. Gina

wow, sugar free…I’m passing this to the mamaw… it will be a huge hit! thanks for giving me a chance to share with the diabetics in our family!!

  5. Jen

Wow, imagine the money saved doing it this way! Plus less waste from individual packets! :D

  6. How is that instant coffee? I’ve always had bad luck with it, maybe I’ve just had the wrong brand in the past. Looks like Wal-Mart brand there in the pic, am I right? It sounds like a fantastic mix and I love that it’s sugar free! I look forward to seeing your other treats recipes!

  7. Hey Linda Thank you so much!! I appreciate you just reading Southern Plate but I am truly thrilled that it is coming in handy, too!!

    Michele Thank you! me, too!

Susie Q You have me smiling so big my cheeks hurt!! Thank you so much!

Gina I was hoping I wasn’t the only one having to come up with sugar free gifts!! Thank you! Hope your MawMaw enjoys it!

Jen Now your singin’ my tune! I want to eventually experiment with different flavors of creamers and such, I think it would be divine! So many possibilities here!

Heather Now, I’m actually a bit of a coffee snob. I buy whole bean and grind them fresh each time I make coffee. I have never liked instant coffee straight (I mean mixed up like coffee) but I do like this mix very much! As far as instant coffee goes, I think that wal mart brand is about as good as they come! I like it better than Folgers brand. I always keep instant coffee on hand to use in some recipes such as tiramisu and cappuccino frosting.

  8. Betsy

Very nice! Great idea for gifts!

  9. Barbara

I am so happy to see the Sugar Free Cappuccino Mix!!! I’m also tickled pink that you’re going to do some more recipes that will be sugar free (or just about sugar free) — thank you!

    Hi, Christy!
I didn’t drink coffee till I was dating my dear hubby. Before we were married, he started me off by mixing half coffee and half hot chocolate. Slowly he weaned me of the hot chocolate. We now love strong coffee, but every now and then I like to add a cappuccino mix right to my brewed coffee in place of a creamer. Mmmmmm! YAY, now I can make my own! Thanks for an awesome idea!

  11. Julie

Sounds great! I love a coffee drink especially one that is sugar free!!

  12. WillowDee

Christy, this will be perfect for my daughter and SIL – and for me! Thanks for posting, can’t wait to try it. :)

  13. mmmmm…. cappuccino! I have so enjoyed following your blog! especially the gift mixes. I have saved everyone of them. I made homemade jalapeno jelly this year for gifts, but this will be good for next year!

  14. AMY

I love capuccino, and I should be driking the sugar free kind with weight in mind. I want to try your recipe, but I think I want to try and steer it in a vanilla direction and see what I come up with. Maybe if I use vanilla flavored sugar free coffee creamer and more coffee and less or no chocolate drink mix?? I will let you know if I try it and it works! Thanks for the ideas, all of your gift mixes are great ideas.

  15. I am so excited that you are sharing this sugar free recipe and that we have more to look forward to! I have been searching for sugar free treats. This is one I think even my daddy would love and maybe not even notice that it is sugar free. I have found fat free cappuccino but not sugar free. Thanks for all of your ideas, it has been fun!

  16. April in CT

This would be a perfect gift for my mom. Thank’s Christy!

  17. Glenda

Thank you so much for this recipe that is sugar free. I am so looking forward to your recipes coming out in Jan. that are sugar free. I have diabetes 2 and working really hard trying to get my blood sugars down before my next blood work in Jan. or I will have to go on insulin. Needless to say I am getting bored with my menus and looking forward to having something new to try. Thanks again!

  18. This is wonderful! I also have to be careful with sugar and I LOVE cappucino… I’m making this one for sure. I go to Starbucks quite often to get the sugar free cinnamon latte and usually end up buying something else when I’m in there. They always give me one of those brown bags with handles. I save all of them because they are nice (and sturdy) gift bags. I’m thinking this gift mix is perfect for those bags too!

  19. Heather

This is a WONDERFUL recipe…..So many that I know will be getting this for christmas……This also works well for those watching their carbs…..Thank you=

  20. I am a Starbuck’s addict, and since I am diabetic, I have to limit myself to just a tall, skinny vanilla latte only once in a while.
This may really fit the bill to stave off my cravings!

I have been known to make sugar-free hot chocolate with coffee instead of hot water!

  21. Colorado Springs

I suggest one more step. Put everything in the blender, dry, and run it on high for several minutes until everything is completely mixed. It makes the flavor consistent and makes it dissolve better.

  22. Kim

    What a great idea!

  23. I am LOVING all of the mixes! I have even made a few already! Thanks so much!

  24. Marie in Virginia

I love, love your gift mixes. Between school, sports and church my son’s have 18 teachers/coaches. These will be great gifts!
    Thank You!

  25. DD

Looks great, definately going to have to try it and share with friends!

  26. Ashley

wonderful! I have a ton of creamer sitting in the cabinet, so I might have to try this one out soon

  27. What a great mix. This could be made with some Christmas flavored creamers!

  28. Christy – This is great and I can make it for my mom who definitely has a sweet tooth. It is in keeping with my theme of handcrafted gifts for Christmas this year.
    Thank you! Beth in PA

  29. Sonya M.

FYI- If you want something similar, but don’t want to make up a big batch of this recipe, General Foods has sugar free, decaf Suisse Mocha. I found it cheap at Big Lots last weekend. I’m drinking it now and it’s yummy. I think I’ll go back tonight and get more!

This does look like a great recipe if you have a lot of people on your gift list who like flavored coffee!

  30. Kathleen

I’ve been enjoying all of your mixes – many of our neighbors, the postman, UPS man, etc, will be receiving goodie baskets that include some of your tasty treats.
This, I think, will be my favorite – because I *love* nutmeg!

  31. Debby

Wow..just found this site from a link in an email group. So thankful for this recipe! It’s the first sugar free capuccino mix recipe I’ve seen. I am diabetic, and love these type of drinks!
Thank you! Can’t wait to look at the rest of your site!!

  32. Husband has been looking for a sugar free cappuccino for me..Haven’t tried it yet but sounds great! Thanks and keep the sugar free reciepts comming..

  33. I made this last year when you posted it except I used
    caffiene-free instant coffee…and the splenda….My body just doesn’t handle caffiene very well….
    thanks
    Brenda

  34. Lynne

I love that you are posting all these great mixes that can be given as inexpensive and useful gifts. Thanks a bunch!

  35. Lawanda Ball

Thanks for the recipe. I am going to make this and share it with the girls at work. We are always looking for good “coffee”, being that we are nurses on the night shift. Thanks again, and I DON’T like nutmeg either!

  36. Deanie

My hubby is a diabetic so I am excited to find this recipe and can’t wait for the ones to follow! Thanks

  37. Sara Jones

I am so thrilled that you are going to be sending us some low sugar/sugar free recipes. I am type 2 diabetic and it is so hard to find special treats that are actually edible. Can’t wait. Right now I am like a kid waiting on Santa. I will anxiously be waiting!
By the way, if you would like for your kids to receive a letter from Santa and don’t mind sharing your address with me with their names, I will see to it that a letter is sent to them.

  38. Janie from LaFayette, Alabama

I am so excited. Great Recipes and I look forward to using this one often. My husband does not like coffee but will drink hot chocolate. So, I plan to use the decaf coffee in your recipe and mix the first batch just for him.

  39. Wanda Harvell

WOW, I really like this cappucino recipe, going to try it for sure and also some of the others. And I look forward to the recipes that you are going to add because I have problems with sugar too. I have mine under control right now but if I indulge, it goes back up.

Also, I love all the recipes, for that matter, everything. Thank you very much.

    Wanda

  40. Dee

I’ve been a recent convert to cappuccino…. before it’s been only versions of hot chocolate. I, too, have issues with sugar and am really anxious to try this recipe. I’ll be picking up all the ingredients that I don’t have on hand when I go to the store this afternoon. Thanks much!

    Dee

  41. Pamela Lambert

I love this recipe, however I use sugar free French Vanilla creamer. Gives it a richer flavor.

  42. Helen

This mix was way too stout for me…it had a much stronger coffee flavor than I like, and I discovered that I don’t like nutmeg either! I added more creamer, sugar, and chocolate in increments until it tasted right to me. I used a 16 oz. mug, and it only took 3 1/2 tbs. of mix to make it taste right to me. This mixture came the closest to tasting like the yummy “Mocha Cappucino” you get in convenience stores.out of the Cappucino machine. It’s sweeter and less bitter tasting (coffee flavor is much milder).

    Here’s the changes I made:

    • 2 Cups powdered coffee creamer
    • 2 Cups no sugar added chocolate drink mix (I used Nesquik)
    • 2/3 C instant coffee granules (I used Decaf Folgers Crystals)
    • 1 1/4 Cups Splenda
    • 1 tsp. cinnamon
To prepare, place 3 ½ Tbs. in a 16 oz. mug and add hot water to about ¾ full.

  43. Cyndy

This looks like a great recipe except there is still PLENTY of sugar in the Coffee-Mate Creamer…how can you make this work without the creamer?

    • I’m afraid your best bet is to use light creamer but you can experiment with no creamer and adding fresh milk if you like. I love milk in my coffee!
Just be sure to tell folks you give it to that they need to add it or they’ll be in for a bitter drink :)

  44. Where can I find the sugar free Newquick? I’ve found the regular, with sugar, but not the sugar free.
    Thanks for the wonderful recipes!

  45. I need to make this soon! Thanks

  46. Ashlee

thank you!! I’m adding this to my gift making list.. Will it work just as well to swap the splenda for real sugar for those who don’t like splenda? I think I will make it both ways this year but wanted to make sure its an even swap for sugar/splenda
    thanks!!

  47. Now I have to go back to the store to get no sugar added Nesquik……

  48. Carol W

Thanks Christy, I look forward to your sugar free goodies as Mama can’t have
sugar either. She does like a little sweet now and then but I try not to have
those sweets around when she can’t have them. Got any ideas for a pound
    cake – her absolute favorite!

  49. Sheila R

This will be a great gift for my aunt who is a diabetic, and a friend of mine who is also and there is no Starbucks closer than over a hr away…lol.

  50. Ramona

Just love that this is sugar free and LOVE coffee!
