These are my brother’s favorite cookies and consequently, the ones I remember Mama making the most growing up. Unlike many of today’s cookies, these have a good crunch to them along with a pure flavor …

THE COOKIE CHALLENGE! Can I teach 1stopmom.com to make cookies?

Submitted by Christy Jordan on Friday, December 12, 200827 Comments

Video

About a week ago, I received a challenge from Tricia over at 1stopmom.com. She swore that she couldn’t make cookies and I said that not only could she, but I would make a video showing her how and guarantee it! The below video explains all of the details and today is the big reveal…did I succeed? Did I fail? I have been anxious for the past few days, worried that I was a bit too confident in my own abilities.

1stopmom didn’t even tell ME how it turned out, I had to find out first thing this morning! I told her if they turned out right, I’d do another video of myself singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat backwards – will I be singing?

My video tutorial of how to make these cookies.

For the results, visit www.1stopmom.com!!!

I’m going to be holding my breath!

Here’s the recipe:

Mrs. Field’s $250 Cookies

Cream together:

2 cups butter

2 cups brown sugar

2 cups sugar

Add:

4 eggs

2 t. vanilla

Mix together:

4 cups flour

1 t. salt

2 t. baking powder

2 t. soda

5 cups oatmeal (Put small amounts in blender after measuring until it turns to powder)

Mix together all ingredients-add 24 oz. bag of chocolate chips, 1 8 oz. plain hershey bar ( finely grated), 3 cups chopped nuts ( any kind- I use pecans). Bake on ungreased cookie sheet. Make golf ball sized cookies 2″ apart. Bake at 375 degrees for 6 minutes. Makes 112 cookies.

Y’all know I can’t actually bring you a recipe and not go off on tangents…here is my tangents and bloopers reel.

I have been reading this site for awhile but never left a message. Today, I had to leave a message after watching your video and the video from 1stopmom – by george I think she’s got it. Her cookies looked good. GREAT job!

  • Stephanie says:

Hooray, it worked! Both yours and 1stopmom’s cookies look great!

By the way, I absolutely love your accent. I was watching your video, but had to pause it partway through so I could get my son out of his highchair. When I started talking to him, I suddenly realized that I was talking with a southern accent (I kind of grew up in Florida, the accent comes naturally when I hear someone talking with it). It was funny.

  • Alesha says:

I’ve been looking for a new chocolate chip recipe, I’m not really happy with mine and I think I found one. I am going to try your recipe this weekend. Thanks…..

  • Shelley says:

Way to go. I love your accent too – reminds me of my own!

I must be crazy, but I didn’t know they made oven thermometers. I’ll be buying one next time I’m at Walmart because my oven is older than me, and I’m 36 – no, I’m not kidding!

  • Robert (citycowboy) says:

YAY!!! We knew you could do it. Now ya gotta post a video of you doin the happy dance. LOL. Who says ya cant teach someone how to cook. CHRISTY CAN

  • Deborah – Didn’t she do a fabulous job? Hers look better than mine!

    Stephanie- Whut Ak-si-yunt?

Aleesha – thank you!! They are SO GOOD!!!!!! I hope you get to try them and let me know if you do!!

Hey Shelley! They are handy little buggers! I still put one in about once a year just to check to see if mine is even. Cheap, too!

Robert – hehe, I will have to do that! Let me get my house all cleaned up and its happy time!!! Thank you so much!

    SHE HAD ME SO NERVOUS!!!
    Gratefully,
    Christy

  • Sonya M. says:

I need to get an oven thermometer. I think mine cooks low. I’ve started turning it up about 20° and it seems to help. BTW, there’s a little metal notch on the back of your stove temperature nob that you can adjust to change the setting once you find out how far off it is!

Hmm… I have to check into the AirBake cookie sheets. Maybe I’ll put one on my Christmas list for my mother. She’s been bugging me for gift ideas!

  • BillGent says:

The cookies looked good! Congrats 1stopmom.

Funny about the oven thermometer. I bought one about a year ago but my oven was pretty accurate. After seeing the video I decided to check it while making Cornbread. It was 50 degrees off! See, ya did yet another good deed today.

  • cookie says:

Cheers for ya both, 1stopmom for doin such a bang-up job for a first timer(I’ve never done it myself) and you Christy-girl, for learnin her how!!

Problem is now, I need a cookie sheet, confoundit!! I feel like Brady, I’m hungry and can’t wait to eat them cookies!

  • Hey Sonya and Cookie: You know, that cookie sheet I showed only costs $9.00 and some change for the large one. I’ve had mine for AGES, almost ten years. Oh and despite what they say, you CAN put those puppies in the dishwasher! Christy doesn’t handwash unless its an antique and worth more than I am!

Bill, thank you! Oh wow, I done good today!!! Thank you! Pass the cornbread, please!!!

    Gratefully,
    Christy

  • Merrie says:

Yes! You did it!!! I believe that you can teach ANYBODY to cook the “proper” way (you know the good ole Southern Plate way!)
I loved seeing you and hearing you. It was pure sweetness to my ears to hear your accent! NOBODY in Oklahoma talks as purty as you!

  • Heather says:

Awww, I loved your blooper reel! Your little son is too cute! “Ever since the last time mom made ‘em, this is the best!” This really looks like a great recipe, and it’s so cool you did this challenge with 1StopMom. That was cute to hear the Mission Impossible theme, haha! Congrats on a great tutorial video and thanks for sharing!

  • Tammy says:

No offence or nuthin’ but I really did not come here for the cookie…I just came to here someone that sounded like “home” lol!

I enjoyed your video’s very much. My Red Hat friends here in Ohio swear up and down that I talk like Paula Deen…nope, me and you sound more alike…why we could be sisters…..

I’m trying out the twitter thang too…see ya around ;~D

  • Kasey says:

Oh – I love your accent too! You sound just like my husband’s family (his mother was born in AL). :) I’m still a little miffed that I seem to have no accent even though I was TN born and raised.
Those cookies looked YUMMY! And congratulations to 1stopmom – she did it! You definitely need to do more videos, this one was great.

  • April in CT says:

Christy! Oh. My. GOODNESS girl..could you be any stinkin’ cuter? You and Brady both…I just wanted to pinch y’all. LOL Your accent made me feel right at home.

I love, love, love my air bake cookie sheets too. Before I bought them my cookies never turned out quite right and now I can’t seem to mess ‘em up. I’m a sucker for a chocolate chip cookie and I’ll have to try these out soon. :)

  • Micha says:

I will admit I laughed all the way through the blooper video. I think we might be long lost sisters.

  • Su says:

So now I definitely do believe you are a Southerner! lol
Your accent is cute! And Brady must surely have a future as a food critic.

  • Su says:

PS. What is the weight of a stick of butter?

  • Sharon says:

Love your accent. :) I lost mine. I think i have a little left.:) Cookies look really good.:)
    Sharon:)

  • zestycook says:

Great accent Christy! The cookies look great. Cool Idea.

    zesty

  • Sonya M. says:

Su, I happened to have a stick of butter and a food scale. A stick of butter is 115 g!

  • Su says:

Thanks for that Sonya! I read online before that a stick was 250g, and after making a recipe following that advice it turned out very wrong.

  • Hey Merrie! I just LOVE that name!! You are SO sweet!!! I appreciate your kindness and faith in me!!! I am sooooo very human, I hope I don’t let you down anytime soon!! I’ll keep doing my best!! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plain!! (I know y’all must get tired of that song, but I swear if I lived there I’d sing it every day!!!)

Hey Heather! hehe, I thought that was tooo precious, too! Thank you so much! I hope to do another challenge soon. Anyone got any baking issues? Hehe

Tammy Aww you are the SWEETEST thing!!!! I need to get some of my red hat pics up. I am going to work on that this week! I was an FQM and started red hatting in my mid twenties! I don’t have much time for it now (Hello, Katy!) but I do love my red hatters!!!

The pic of you in your pink hat on twitter got me all nostalgic!

Kasey What accent? LOL . Now you know I claim dual citizenship with Alabama and Tennessee, don’t you? I’m sure you sound normal ~winks~ if you were born in Tennessee, and that twang will come back b’fore ya know it!!! I do want to do more videos, but I still can’t believe you sainted people sat through all of that!!!

April I just don’t even know what to say about me being cute. I sure do wish I felt cute! You are VERY GENEROUS in your kindness!! Thank you!!! Now Brady, I’ll take that. He is so stinkin cute!!! Hehe. You know, I’ve had those airbake sheets for close to ten years now and I do just love those things, I’m glad I’m not the only one! Let me know if you get to try them and what you think!!!!

Micha LOL! We definitely need to do lunch one day!!!!

Su LOL! I dispelled all doubt there, huh? I don’t think I sound as southern as some but I admit, I do get a bit more twangy when I am in front of the camera. I tried not to but when I try to pay attention to how I am talking it sounds funny and awkward so I took my husband’s advice and just let it go and not think about it. I wonder if I really sound that way every day..hmm…

Oh stick of butter? THANK YOU SONYA!! How cool is that! I appreciate you stepping in and answering that one!!!!!!

Sharon I bet you got plenty of accent, girl!!!! Lol Thank you!!

Zesty I’m waiting on the first Zesty Challenge now!!!! Y’all check out http://www.zestycook.com!

Sonya Thank you so much! I need a food scale, would you believe I’ve never owned one?

    Su Sonya Rocks!

  • Sonya M. says:

Su and Christy- Aw, shucks! Glad I could help! It just took a minute to take the butter out of the fridge and plop it on the scale! I actually use it for making herbal medicines. That was the first time I used it for food! I was using a postal scale of my husband’s, but it wasn’t precise enough. I got this one at TJ Maxx for about $18. It’s all electronic. I know they sell simpler ones for less.

The thought of these cookies has been burning a hole in my stomach! I made some low carb brownies yesterday and, although they tasted pretty good, it wasn’t quite the same!

  • Sonya M says:

Ok, this is way after the fact, but this post inspired me to buy an AirBake knock-off around Christmas -$8 for two at Big Lots, folks! I finally got around to using one for cookies today. I don’t bake a lot because my hubby low carbs, but I tempted him with chocolate chip cookies baked with Splenda. The cookie sheet really did make a difference! The bottoms weren’t at all burnt and they slid right off. Thanks for the tip, Christy!
