Dr Seuss Snacks Read Across America Snack Cupcake

This is National Read Across America Week! For those of you with elementary and preschool, this week will be filled with several Dr. Seuss readings and activities as Read Across America Week always coincides with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. My son’s school has a big to do all week long, even hosting a green eggs and ham breakfast for families one morning! Special speakers come in and contests and activities run throughout the week as well.

Room mothers are usually asked to provide some sort of “Seuss Themed” snack to make this week even more special for the kids. I thought I’d bring you what I did this year for my son’s third grade class and also offer you the printable page I created with all of the wockets on it so all you have to do is print and go!

If you aren’t a baker, simply print out the wockets, preparing them as instructed below, and purchase your class’s cupcakes from a local bakery, then stick your wockets in and you’ve got a seusserific snack with virtually no fuss! These also go great in breakfast muffins. Some schools don’t allow baked goods, so making your own wockets and purchasing cupcakes would be another way around this. Thank goodness my wonderful town hasn’t gone that route and I can still bring baked items to school!

I love to bake cupcakes in ice cream cones and kids really enjoy them as well. Doing this added the perfect touch of Seussical whimsy to this treat.

Whenever I need to make special cupcakes, rather than go and look for themed cupcake inserts (commonly called “picks”) to go in them, I like to design my own and use this method. It allows for far more creativity, is less expensive, and really lets you personalize your cupcakes to the occasion. I’ve designed several different picks for my kids birthdays which included curling ribbons, cartoon characters, and even photographs of my kids themselves! I’m going to do a complete tutorial on ice cream cone cupcakes next week so this one is just going to be a bit more brief, mostly serving as an idea for those of us who have to make these Seuss- snacks this week!

dscn0903

I used a boxed cake mix for this. Simply place your ice cream cones in a muffin tin like this.

dscn0905

Fill each cone about 2/3 full.

Be careful of the ones with chips in the top because the batter will spill over these while they are baking. I try not to use any with chips in them but sometimes have to when I don’t think to buy extra. Those with chips around the top, I just save for ice cream later by putting them in a zipper bag.

dscn0909

This is how full I make mine. You might want to do a little less until you see how much it will rise. I always make two or three extras in case I have any that cook over the cone.

Note: These previous three pics were from another tutorial I’ll post next week. I actually dyed the cake batter for my Seuss cupcakes green! `

sheet-of-wockets

Print out the sheet of Wockets by clicking here.

You can use cardstock if you like but I just used plain old paper.

wockets-and-supplies

To make our Wockets, we need to print out a few sheets of them and cut them out. We’ll also need clear contact paper and either Popsicle sticks, coffee stirrers, or drinking straws that have been cut in half.

Just use what you have on hand. You can even use toothpicks if you have them.

I try not to ever go out and buy something when I can make do instead.

folding-over-contact-paper-onto-wockets

Once you have all of your wockets cut out, place them face down on clear contact paper and fold it over, pressing and smoothing to remove any air bubbles.

You have just laminated something the cheapest way possible :) .

cut-out-wocket

Cut out the Wocket, leaving a bit of an edge. This is so the oils in the icing don’t get up to the paper you printed your Wocket on and discolor it. We want it nice and sealed up in there.

wocketonastick2

Attach your Wocket to a stick, coffee stirrer, half of a drinking straw, whatever cranks your tractor.

I glued mine but you can tape it, staple it, glue it…I’m starting to feel like Bubba Gump here..

wocket-in-cupcake

Stick it in your iced cupcake! I died my cake batter green for these and my icing bright orange. Remember, if you don’t have time or simply don’t want to bake cupcakes, just call your local grocery store and have the bakery make you some and then put these Wockets in them!

voila-wocket

WOCKETS!!

snowandseuss-064

Now here is the fun part!

When the kids are done with their cupcakes, have them take the stick

off the back of their Wocket and put him in their Pocket.

~giggle~

Trust me, they’ll be as tickled by the idea as I am!

Have a happy Read Across America Week! Now is the perfect time to read your favorite childhood story to a special child in your life! I’ll be sharing my Raggedy Ann book with my youngest this week and Ramona Quimby with my oldest!

Do you like my Ice Cream Cone Cupcake Holder? That was designed by my husband and made by my father! It holds eighteen cupcakes and is made out of smooth wood. There is plenty of height to it to handle taller ice cream cones as well. I’ve had one of these for years and am always the hit of the party when I show up with my cupcakes in their innovative carrier!

  2. Super cute! I love it!

  3. You are soo creative and quite an inspiration to me. My children are grown, but I have grand daughter who come every other week-end and one that lives with us. I’d forgotton how to make fun foods for children and you have roushed my creative side for them. Thank-you!

    • Hey Karen! I am actually blushing now! lol Thank you so much for the praise! I don’t feel all that creative, its just that my overactive mind tends to wander so much and I’m always looking for new things to do (I get bored easily)!.
      You are so very sweet.

My mother always had us in the kitchen. Whether it was stirring the topping for the peach crisp and putting the M&M’s on top of the cookies, we always felt like we had a hand in baking with her and it is amazing what such a little thing can do for a kids confidence as well as bringing you closer.

I bet you are a fabulous Grandmother!! I was really close to a few of my grandmothers.

I’m rambling here…I must need more coffee!!!

Hope you have a wonderful week!
      Gratefully,

  4. Oh how cute Christy! You did a great job with them too – always helps to have the right tools.

    • I’m going to go into more detail about icing them and such in my tutorial next week , in case some people have never used an icing bag or tip before!

      Thank you so much!
      Christy :)

These are soooo cute. Even my teens would love them! (We’re a Dr. Seuss family). Thanks for sharing these, Christy.

    • We’re Seussical, too!!

I DEARLY Love getting to read Green Eggs and Ham to kids at school. I used to go and get all dressed up as a character and then go read it to my son’s preschool.

My two most favorite books on earth are Green Eggs And Ham and
If You Give A Pig A Pancake.
When I do the Pig a Pancake one, I bring pancakes and syrup to all the kids!!!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOH I haven’t gotten to do that one in a while ~looks through her dress up clothes…~

      hehe

    Great idea…

  14. Hope

Thanks for the inspiration!!! I’m the Mom bringing cupcakes on Friday for my daughter’s Kindergarten class. I wanted to do something “Seussical” but wasn’t coming up with anything new. Thanks to you I now have that something new. I took your “Wocket” idea and transformed it into personalized bookmarkers. I found a book plate that reads “This Book Belongs to _______” with the Cat in the Hat on it in a very old “Green Eggs and Ham” book. I just need to copy, fill in the blank with each child’s name then laminate.

Thanks for always providing me with inspiration when I need it!!!

  15. Jane

Love this idea…..great for my grandkids!!!

  16. Kim

Very cute and not too complicated.

  22. I am so impressed! Beautiful!

  23. Those are so cute. We just had regular birthday cake for Dr. Seuss’s birthday yesterday. I will have to remember this for next year. (No our district doesn’t allow cake, either, but we had it anyway!)

I love your site, very inspirational. Thank you for sharing your creativity with every one, it is very helpful!

  29. Jayme

Thank you so much for sharing your idea with us. My daughter loves the book There’s a Wocket in my Pocket! We read it to her 4 or 5 times a day. I’m so excited for her birthday party now. Thank you again.

  30. Michael

Christy, could you have made these any more sinfully delightful?? OMG, the combination of flavors and textures!! I’ve honestly never heard of a cupcake in an ice cream cone. That’s so cool! I think I’m going to have to make a big ol batch of these when I get home…chocolate, chocolate chip with some rich fudge in the middle. mmmmmmmmmmmmm hehe

I think I just gained five pounds thinking of it!! lol

  31. Brandi

So how do I get the awesome cupcake holder?

  32. Charlotte Rhubottom

Adorable!! Will have to make these for the grands!(kids, that is)!

  33. Chrissy

Where do I find out how to get this cupcake holder??? I do not see a link on here!

  34. Sue Horne

Christy!! I cannot believe how great the timing of this is…we just got our “weekly note” from the teacher telling all about Seuss Celebration week at our elementary school. I’m making the Grinch this weekend for the cupcakes on Friday – our Grinch day! Love you to pieces!!

  35. Bev

You are just SO CREATIVE! Thanks for the wonderful ideas.

While I don’t have any grandchildren yet to make these for all is not lost. I do VBS at church every year as the craft leader. But what a great idea to make for the kids snacks with the VBS theme.

Thank you so much. Love your ideas!

  36. Jessica

How cute is that! Love it!

  37. Veronica

    Christy,

The library I work at will love these!! Thanks for the tips!! Our local arts society is also putting on Seussical Musical and we’re running a Dr. Seuss theme at our library in conjuntion with that. Kindergarten registration is also this week at our library, I feel a “Wocket in my Pocket” coming up this week!!

    Thanks, again!
    Veronica

  38. Debra Richey

Hi Christy! These look great!! What perfect timing for this post; I am going to visit my grandchildren in Florida next week and will definitely be making these with them. Will also be using your pancake recipe to make them pancakes. Love your recipes!!

I would love to have an ice cream cupcake holder like yours. How can I get your Dad to make me one? I didn’t see a link.

  39. Little Amy

Wow! As a school librarian, I am in awe of this idea. Thank you. I think I will try doing these and leaving them in the teacher’s lounge to get my teachers pumped about Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss birthday. Yea for Reading!!!

  40. Mary

I love this… where did you find the picture of the wocket? I would like to try a couple different characters and cannot find any really.
    Thanks, Mary

  41. Christie

Hey, this is my first time on your site. I love the Dr. Suess wocket idea. I can’t wait to try it for my kindergarter’s party Friday at school. I feel I can actually do this. Thank you.

  42. Heather B in NC

    Christy,

I made these for my son and daughter’s 1st and 2nd grade classes for Read Across America week. They turned out so cute I didn’t have the heart to stick them in the cupcakes and get the little sticks dirty. They were a huge hit with the kids and the teachers. Thanks for sharing!

    Heather

  43. Donna

    Christy,
I used your idea for the wockets for my granddaughters snack day today. This week being Dr. Seuss theme, it worked out perfectly.

Instead of the cones, I made brownies. Right when I took them out of the oven I placed a few yellow and green marshmellows on top.
I then stuck a wocket stick in the middle.

Her class was so excited! The teacher was very impressed.
thank you so much for your idea. I think this grandmother just made alot of ‘brownie” points.

    Donna

  44. I love your creativity with the Wocket in My Pocket to celebrate Dr. Seuss. The wocket on a stick to actually put in the pocket after eating the cupcake is Seusstastic! I also love your cone cake holder. I just made some plain pink ones for my daughter’s soda shop birthday last month but didn’t know how to bake or display them so they would stay up, wish I had a holder like yours. I’m adding a link to this on my blog where I collect Dr. Seuss activities. Thanks for sharing. http://www.obseussed.com/p/seuss-sites.html
