In the south, our menu selection changes entirely with the season, and each new season is something to be excited about. Right now, we’re all celebrating sunshine and heat, gardens and the outdoors. When the temperature reaches as high as it does here, that means cold food is a welcome delight.

This cake is definitely celebration worthy on all counts. The appearance makes you think of red balloons and barbecues but beyond that, the ease of it is stunning. I dreamed this up a few weeks back when I had company coming and wanted an impressive dessert with ingredients I had on hand. I was hoping they’d like it and the speed with which it disappeared confirmed that they did. Just to be sure though, I made another one. POOF! And another…POOF!

Alright, now I’m ready to bring it to you – with a POOF! Guarantee.

One of my reader’s asked me on facebook if I had any suggestions for dishes to bring to family reunions and this one is going to go to the top of my list! The complete list of my personal favorite Southern Plate family reunion dishes is at the bottom of this post.

I LOVE family reunions but it looks like we’re done with them for the time being in my family. Folks scatter to the wind and family expand, people get older and in a bad way, leaving just a few of us stragglers with the enthusiasm to herd the crowd back to the farm one bright sunny day. We still gather at my mother’s house a few times a year though and while this is just my brother and his family along with my sister and nephew, it’s still a big enough gathering to count as a reunion to the younger generation.

They won’t remember Papa Reed giving us rides on the tractor as he let kids take turns getting to sit over the wheel. They won’t remember fifty people piling up on the flatbed trailer for a ride to the creek where we’d try to find the biggest rock to make the biggest splash and they won’t ever sit in the front yard of the farm and listen to people playing banjos and fiddles on the porch.

They won’t ever have the memories in my head, the experiences I gathered as a little girl with a sunburn stripe going down the middle of my two blonde ponytails. But they’ll have new ones. Not the same, but just as precious to them. And of course, they’ll remember the food as well.

Scroll down to the bottom of this post for a list of my favorite things to bring to family get togethers.

You’ll need: Chocolate Cake mix (regular, dark, devil’s food, etc), a large container of whipped topping, a bottle of chocolate syrup, and some cherries (I prefer with stems) and nuts for the topping.

Of course I’m using the cheap stuff!

~smiles her perky housewife of the 1950’s era smile and looks into the camera with pride~

“Nothing but the cheapest for me and my family!”

dscn1114

Prepare your cake according to package directions in a 9×13 inch pan.

dscn1115

As soon as you take it out of the oven, poke holes all in the top with a fork.

Until it looks like it has been attacked by a mob of angry chickens.

I love that quote “Raising children is like being pecked to death by chickens!”.

~giggles~

I laugh now but some days, the truth in that jes’ ain’t no laughing matter!

dscn1116

This is one of our precious “golden forks”. I say they are precious because my children treat them like they are crown jewels. I was in Old Time Pottery a few weeks ago with both kids, perusing the kitchenware, when we came upon a bin of these forks. They were only fifty cents each and both kids had spotted them from a distance. They stood over them, oohing and ahhing as if they had discovered Captain Blackbeard’s treasure! So I picked up one for each kid and started to put them in the buggy. Oh no!! They wanted to carry them, apparently not trusting their precious fifty cents forks to be out of their sight.

While standing there, I somehow got into a conversation with a very nice lady about recipes and she and I ended up talking for about ten minutes or so (I often get into conversations about food with strangers so this shouldn’t seem odd in the least). My kids were talking quietly among themselves (WOW) and I was grateful for their great behavior while Mama chatted.

When we got to the front of the store, however, I realized that the whole time, my kids (mostly Katy) had been going through that bin getting out more gold forks! We now have ten golden forks and whenever company comes over to eat Katy says “OOH! WAIT!! I’ll go get you a GOLDEN fork!!!”

dscn1117

Now take that bottle of chocolate syrup and pour it over the cake.

Yes, the entire bottle. Saturate that cake. It will soak into the holes and warm cake and…oh my if your mouth isn’t watering now I don’t know what it takes to do it for ya!

Let your cake cool completely and place in the fridge.

Sometimes I speed things up a bit by placing my hot cake in the freezer but lets keep that between us, alrighty?

dscn1120

Once your cake is cold, spread the entire shebang of whipped topping over it.

I spread it all over but didn’t take a picture when I was done, I just have this here action shot so you’ll have to use your imagination.

sundaecake-035Top with chopped nuts and a cherry and serve cold!

sundaecake-034Check out that cross section!

This is so easy, you don’t have any excuse not to make it!

Chocolate Sundae Cake

  • Box chocolate cake mix (Dark Chocolate, Chocolate, Devil’s Food, etc.),prepared according to package directions
  • Large container whipped topping (16 oz)
  • Bottle Chocolate Syrup
  • Cherries and chopped nuts for garnishing

Prepare cake mix according to package directions in a 9×13 pan. While still hot, poke holes all in top with fork. Pour entire bottle of chocolate syrup over cake. Allow to cool completely. Spread whipped topping over entire cake. Refrigerate for several hours. Garnish each slice with chopped nuts and a cherry.

This cake looks absolutely delicious! I’ll have to try it soon since some of my favorite foods are chocolate and cherries :-)

    • BEVERLY says:

THIS CAKE IS WONDERFUL. I MADE IT AND TOOK IT TO WORK FOR THE GANG TO TRY. NEEDLESS TO SAY IT WAS A BIG HIT. WAY TOO EASY TO BE AS GOOD AS IT IS. TASTED LIKE SHONEYS HOT FUDGE CAKE.

  • Cara says:

Oh wow, that looks so good. Anything that looks that divine, HAS to be good for you, right??? I love the story about the golden forks, too cute!

  • Su says:

It IS so easy! I should make it for my colleague’s birthday on Friday. AND I can buy all the stuff here!!!

You’ll know I have if you see the photos on Facebook! haha ;)

When you say chocolate syrup, do you mean the kind that goes on ice cream?

    • Hey! I mean the kind that you put in milk to stir it up and make it turn chocolate. Its a bit runnier than the chocolate sauce you get here to go on ice cream BUT a lot of people put chocolate syrup on ice cream too!

I’m just trying to cover my bases in case it’s called something different where you are!
      Do y’all have Hershey’s syrup?
Thats what I used, the chocolate milk syrup…but I bought the cheap generic version of course!

      • Su says:

They don’t sell Hersheys here! haha
        Oh dear……

I’ll have to look for chocolate syrup for milk, I actually don’t think we have something like that. I can’t recall ever seeing it. It’s mostly powdered stuff for milk, like Nesquik, etc.

        • Abby says:

You can make your own chocolate syrup from cocoa! Here’s a recipe link: http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/chocolatesyrup.htm

Not quite as convenient, but this cake looks like its worth the trouble!!! :) HTH!!

        • Mary says:

Hi Su. Where in the world do you live, that Hersheys hasn’t arrived on store shelves? Hope that was a joke. Look near the ice cream section in your store — where they sell the fixings for ice cream dishes (caramel, fudge sauce, waffle cones, etc.) Hershey’s bottle looks just like Christy’s picture. This might even be good with a caramel soak, now that I think about it. ;)

          • Su says:

            Nope, not joking! ;)

As far as I know we definitely don’t have Hersheys in Australia, and I don’t believe this has changed anytime recently. I’m not a big fan of Hersheys but some of my friends are (both here where I live and in other states) and even they talk about wanting to buy Hersheys. I’ve never seen it sold here which is why I usually will buy it when I’m in the states to give to people. We don’t have a lot of the brands pr products that you have over there.

  • Becky J says:

That looks wonderful! It reminds me a little bit of the ice cream cake you make with ice cream sandwiches. You just layer them in the pan with chocolate sauce and whipped cream and cherries. Yum! I like this version for when I don’t want to run out and buy ice cream sandwiches, or for when there’s danger of the cake melting either en route or at the event. Thanks!

  • Patti M. says:

Oh the cake looks YUMMY!!!! And it’s so easy! I’m gonna have to try that at our next family gathering!!

  • JoAnnW says:

This is one I definitely have to try. Of course Lisa will make it and I will enjoy it. lol She’s the baker around here. by the way is 5 jelly donuts to many at one sitting? just askin.

  • SonyaM says:

That looks delicious! I think I’ll make it for the 4th of July to take to the in-laws. My nieces and nephews love anything with Cool Whip and maraschino cherries. In fact, they’ll put those in a bowl and eat them straight!

Funny story about the gold forks! It must make Katy feel like a princess!

  • Ann in TN says:

If you’ve never tried it, substitute the cake part with ice cream sandwiches. Only don’t poke holes in the ice cream sandwiches, just drizzle the chocolate sauce over the sandwiches and the whipped topping.

  • Ann in TN says:

Oh, I was just noticing the time on my comment. It’s actually 10:45 where I am. I know my time is an hour ahead of Alabama time. :)

  • Denise says:

This looks so good. I can’t wait to make one.

  • Oooh chocolatey and decadent…sigh me up!

  • Amanda says:

I bet you could use butterscotch syrup too… that’s hubby’s fave, so I might have to try that!

  • Melody says:

Looks like a super idea for the 4th!

I like to throw a boston butt or other kind of pork cut into the crock pot for family reunions. Grab some buns and you’re good to go!

  • LisaS says:

I am pondering doing this cupcake style??? Maybe square cupcakes in a pull apart fashion??? I am so going to have to try it (gonna have to sneak into the kitchen to do it though lol….

  • Bev says:

Thank you. This sounds like just the cake I want to make for a pre 4th of July picnic. I have been looking for just the one.

  • Micha says:

Thank you very much, Christy. I appreciate you taking the time out of your already swamped schedule to compile the list. You and Ricky and the kids are more than welcome to come to my granddaddy’s side of the family reunion. It’s in August and as soon as I find out when all the details like time have been figured out I’ll send you a message. Y’all would fit right in with our crazy bunch.

  • Kay Stebelton says:

I had been looking for quite some time for a true home made peanut butter cake. I went to an open house yesterday and lo and behold my favorite cake in the whole world was there. My sister sent her recipe to me and I would love to share it with the world. Her version is not quite as sweet as some I’ve tasted but it is truly to die for. For all that are interested, here it is:

    PEANUT BUTTER SHEET CAKE

2 STICKS OLEO, 2/3 C. PEANUT BUTTER, 1 CUP WATER,,,BRING TO A BOIL, AND POUR OVER 2 CUPS SUGAR, 2 CUPS FLOUR, 1/4 TSP. SALT, 1 TBSP. VANILLA. MIX AND ADD 1/2 C. BUTTERMILK, MIXED WITH 1 TSP. BAKING SODA. AND ADD 2 EGGS… BAKE AT 400 FOR 20 MIN. BUT I BAKE IT AT 325 – 350, FOR ABOUT 20 MIN.

FROSTING 1/3 C. MILK, 1 STICK OLEO, 2/3 C. PEANUT BUTTER. BRING TO A BOIL AND ADD 1 BOX OF POWDER SUGAR, MIX AND FROST CAKE AFTER IT HAS COOLED. I DON’T THINK THIS IS QUITE AS SWEET AS THE ONE AT THE OPEN HOUSE. I ALSO MAKE SOUR MILK WITH VINEGAR, AS I DON’T BUY BUTTERMILK. HOPE IT TURNS OUT FOR YOU, I HAVE MADE IT A COUPLE OF TIMES WITH THIS RECIPE. TTYL CINDY

    • Elaine says:

What size pan and I also don’t understand the temp difference and yet the baking time is listed as twenty minutes for both the higher and lower temp. I wan tto try this as I love peanut butter but need the clarification. Thanks.

  • Mary says:

    Looks yummy Christy!

Sorry to hear that somebody is lifting your content – you probably remember when that happened to me a few months back. It amazes me that people would do such a thing!

    Have a great week!

  • Lu says:

    Christy,
Thanks for keeping an eye on all of our budgets with your ingredient choices. And you manage to do it without compromising quality or taste, that is the best part of all!

I am thrilled to hear the cookbooks are almost here, I can’t wait to get mine! Thanks for the update!

  • Brittainy says:

Wow, that looks amazing, It completely shocked me to see it come out of a box, mostly! Great work!

  • Billgent says:

Another one hit outta tha park my Sistah! My next door neighbor did some repairs on my truck. I bought the parts and he didn’t charge me a cent for labor. He saved me a good $1000.00 dollars and I’m not kidding. I am so thankful for neighbors like him. I pray he doesn’t move until I’m dead.

Now I gotta figure out if I’m gonna make him a Butterfinger Cake or this one. He’s a chocoholic so either would be good.

“Southern Plate, Recipes good for stress relief, bartering and attracting potential mates”.

  • Heather M. says:

I have made a recipe similar to this except I use Caramel topping (save enough for drizzle on top) and place chopped pecans over the top. It is also delicious! I made it for Christmas gathering last year and the family went crazy over it!

  • Lashawn says:

Hey christy I tried the cheesy hash brown casserole ithb was awesome!! I never could make biscuits they would turn out hard as a rock but bi did your recipe they turned out perfect!my husband and kids wants them all the time now!! Thanks so much!!I love to cook and you make it easier!! Thanks again!!

  • Trixie says:

Well sounds like you have another winner here. What about after the cake is cooled you make a layer of chocolate pudding. Let that cool and then top it with the nuts and cherries. If your going to be a chocoholic, you might as well go all the way.
    Just a thought. LOL
And what a co incidence, I had order some new flatware, and they arrive today. Of course they are not golden ones, but they are pretty too.
Don’t you just love the way kids can come out with the sweetest things.

  • Frankie says:

I’ll be srving this one this summer soon…maybe July 4th!!
Thanks for all your great recipes and I love your blog.
    Frankie

  • Debbie Blackwell says:

Wow, my family will love this one, looks great! I just wish I had a golden fork to eat it with!!! Aren’t kids awesome -

  • Karan C says:

Wow now I am in chocolate heaven.Got a couple of reunions coming up this summer and this is going to be my contribution to them.

Yup may just do two one with chocolate and one with carmel. Love them both.

Story of the kids with the gold spoons is precious. Been meaning to mention that we have been in your area several times. My husbands brother and wife live in Madison….

  • Ashleigh says:

I actually made this cake tonight as a “good luck” cake to have after dinner while watching LSU beat Texas in the College World Series. My husband loved it (though I have to say the game results made him even happier than the cake . . . LOL). I used sugar-free chocolate syrup and light Cool Whip, and it was divine :-) Very, very yummy!

  • hers6 says:

this looks sooo good. easy, too. i will definitely be makin this one!

  • Sandi says:

Sounds delish! I think I may substitute heath bar pieces for the nuts. yumyumyum

  • Brenda says:

This cake looks scrumptious! I just looked and I have all the ingredients. “big smile” Guess what we are having for dessert tonight? The first two guesses don’t count… lol

I love Southern Plate! Thanks for sharing, Christy

    Southern Hugs, Brenda

  • My sister made this cake and took it to the office yesterday. Well, it was a hit and everyone was commenting about how good and moist.

We have a family reunion this week-end and I am going to make it the day before and keep it in the refrigerator.

  • Ava Kinsey says:

OMG!! I can’t believe how wonderful that looks, will be making that as soon as possible!

  • Cindy says:

    Dearest Christy,

You are AWESOME! I cannot tell you how wonderful it has been to find your website and subscribe to your e-mails! I was directed here from a post on CafeMom. Wow! What a delight!

I just pulled the cake from the oven, and the kids pecked the chicken holes in it. The seven year old had some very angry chickens! They pecked the dickens out of the middle…thank goodness for the Cool Whip! LOL! Then they had a blast pouring the syrup. This is the first recipe I have tried, and seeing how down home your recipes appear, I made two! One for a friend recovering from surgery!

I also love the great simple pictures you post with the recipes. It makes a quick reference and will be great for kids to find the ingredients! Does your cookbook have the pictures and cute comments in with each recipe (like the angry chickens, and the golden forks)? I hope so! I want to order one and would love to see those in it! Your personality comes shining through and it is like getting a letter from a friend with a recipe! Priceless!

    Much success to you! Cindy

  • averagebetty says:

YUM. I’m sorry, I’d say more but… I can’t think straight after looking at that cake. YUM. YUM. YUM!

  • Well, I made this cake and took it to the Hudson Reunion tonight. Every bite of the cake was eaten and I licked the pan when I got home. Even a few of the men came by and told me the cake was really good. ….and it is easy to make.

  • Cathy says:

I am so making this today. There’s a huge church a couple blocks behind us and it always has a Fourth of July festival on the Sunday before July 4 — which is today. It culminates in a dazzling fireworks show, which we watch in comfort from our deck. This will be the perfect accompaniment. Thank you so much!

  • Sib says:

This cake was a BIG hit at my families get together today. Everyone raved on and on about it. I will be making it again real soon. Thank You so much!

  • Micha says:

Well I made this Saturday and did not get the first bit of it so I forced myself to make one today (well Sunday considering it is technically Monday)and it totally rocks. It is beyond easy and kid friendly. Thanks Christy!!!

  • SonyaM says:

I made an 8×8 cake and took it to a dinner with some of my family Saturday night. It got lots of compliments! My mother didn’t trust me to bring something (or didn’t think it would be good) so she made a dessert as well, but the chocolate sundae cake got more comments. :-) My low-carbing husband was even tempted enough to eat a leftover piece the next day. I made the rest into cupcakes that I froze to take to the in-laws for the 4th next weekend!

  • Tiffany says:

LOVED,LOVED,LOVED THIS!! My daughter saw the picture while I was looking for other yummie things. she had to have it for her birthday cake and it was a huge hit. We made it as directed but the kids topped their own slice with whatever syrup, sprinkles, etc. Now I have to make another for just the family.

  • PATTI says:

I HAVE MADE THIS ONLY USED CREAM OF COCONUT INSTEAD OF CHOC. SYRUP. I POURED IT OVER THE CAKE, ICED IT WITH COOLWHIP AFTER IT COOLED AND SPRINKLED FLAKED COCONUT AND CHOPPED PECANS OR ALMONDS OVER THE TOP EVEN SOME CHOCOLATE CHIPS. SORT OF A MOUNDS ALMOND JOY CAKE IF YOU WILL!
