My mother learned how to make this from her Danish grandmother. She generally did not use tomatoes but I think tomatoes in this salad sounds scrumptious! Mom also sliced the cukes and onions very thin for more absorption of the vinegar. A bite of these, even with the sugar, was bound to give us kids a pucker!

my recipe includes hot ground pepper, black pepper, and sliced bell peppers on top. marinate all the ingredients except the cucumbers and add them just before serving. My hubby used to like this when he worked construction because it was so refreshing in the heat. .. best

These are always a hit when I take them to a gathering. My great-grandmother loved them because she said the cukes always gave her "a fresh clean burp", LOL. I use grape tomatoes sliced so there is some every bite.

I remember my mom making a mixture of cucumbers, onions and vinegar. I don't remember her putting in sugar and/or water, and I know she didn't put tomatoes in it. Your salad sounds yummy, and is very pretty, too.

This is a staple in our house. Only I don't use sugar - just vinegar and water (and a pinch of salt). It is perfect. I substitute it for chips - it provides the crunch and satisfies my salt craving.
