Old Fashioned (AND SUPER EASY) Berry Cobbler

Berry pie, berry pie
I’m gonna make him a berry pie
I wanna be the apple of his eye
So I’m gonna make him a berry pie
This post is brought to you because of Dolly Parton – and bless her heart, she has no idea! You see, there is a song of hers on called “Berry Pie” that Katy and I have taken a shining to – and by “taking a shining to” I mean that we have taken to listening to it on a repetitive loop anytime we are in the car together
Have you noticed how easily music can affect your mood? Preferring to be happy and upbeat, I choose my music accordingly. Berry Pie is one of those toe tapping, dancing-a-jig-through-life types of songs that you can’t help but smile as you sing along with it.
I know we all struggle at times to maintain our positive attitudes and to focus on appreciating the good things in life rather than bemoaning the bad, so in order to do this I go for a full out assault on negativity. I try to surround myself with optimistic people whenever possible, read motivational quotes on a regular basis, listen to happy and uplifting music, and if I ever feel like I’m still being dragged down into the pit of despair, it always helps to take a moment to mentally list of all of the wonderful things in my life that I am grateful for - I hope you know that you are on that list and I’d like to invite you to leave your own gratitude list at the bottom of this post as an inspiration to others.
So if you’re struggling right now, either with life situations or depression of some sort, take a good look at what your listening to and consider altering your music to a more cheerful, optimistic tunes. Every little bit helps – and as you have seen with negativity, the little things add up to big things pretty quick. Instead of allowing circumstance to continually build big mountains of darkness in our lives, isn’t it time we formed our own constructions projects of big old mountains of sunshine?
As your second assignment I want you to pick someone you love and make them this cobbler. Because I’m a firm believer that the best dishes aren’t made out of a necessity to eat, they’re made out of love for the person who is going to be eating them.
This is one of those super simple recipes from the old days. Most of the recipes from the old days were simple. Folks seemed to really understand the value of “simple” back then, and I think it allowed cooks more time to put love in their dishes. You knew what you were gonna make and you walked into the kitchen and made it from the heart, without even having to look at a recipe. All that time agonizing over complicated instructions was spent instead thinking of how happy Junior was gonna be when he came home from school and found you’d made the family’s favorite cobbler. Thoughts like that just naturally make a body smile, don’t they?
I really don’t understand the thinking behind complicating things but I know folks who prefer more complicated and sophisticated cooking likely look down their nose at my ways. You know what? I’m perfectly okay with that.
I’m a whatever cranks yer tractor kinda gal anyway.
Right now, this cobbler has my engine revving up something fierce so lets get at it!

You’ll need: Self Rising Flour, Sugar, Milk, Margarine, and about two cups of berries.
You can use any type of berries you like, fresh or frozen. I’m using frozen blackberries. YUM!
Now the rule is, ya gotta sing and dance a bit with me as you make this.
Sorry to have to force ya but you know how rules are
Berry pie, berry pie
I’m gonna make him a berry pie

Place your berries in a bowl and add about a tablespoon of margarine. Sprinkle 1/2 C sugar over them.
Heat these in the microwave for about a minute or two, until the margarine is melted and the berries are warm.
I’m using frozen blackberries I got from the grocery store. They came in a 16 ounce bag for a little over $2.00
I wanna be the apple of his eye
So I’m gonna make him a berry pie

It will look like this.
Give them a taste and make sure they are sweet enough for you.
These are just right for me but you may have berries that are a bit on the tart side and prefer to add a touch more sugar to your taste.
Yoddle-dee-yay, yoodle-dee-yie
Yoddle-dee-yum-yum, my oh my
He’s kind of cute, I’m kinda shy
I’m gonna make him a berry pie

In a medium casserole dish, place 1/2 C margarine.
If you don’t have a dish like this, you can just use an 8×8 pan.
Mama used to say, “To really please a man
Put somethin’ in a bowl or somethin’ in a pan
Make him somethin’ tart, make him somethin’ sweet
To get to his heart, make something good to eat”

Place that in the microwave for a minute or so until the margarine is completely melted.
I like to cook and I love to bake
Bread and cookies and pies and cakes
I’m convinced my mama was right
So I’m gonna bake him a berry pie

In a separate bowl, place your sugar and your flour.
Berry pie, berry pie
I’m gonna make him a berry pie
I wanna be the apple of his eye
But I’m gonna make him a berry pie

Stir to combine.
Yoddle-dee-yay, yoodle-dee-yie
Yoddle-dee-yum-yum, my oh my
I wanna win him over so why don’t I
Let my cookin’ do my talkin’ with a berry pie

Add in milk.
A little bit of that, a little bit of this
A lotta lotta sugar and as sweet as his kiss
I wanna give him presents so why don’t I
Show him my love in a berry pie

Then stir that up a bit
Berry pie, berry pie
I’m gonna make him a berry pie
He’s the berry so why don’t I
Get out the fixin’s for a berry pie

Pour batter mixture over melted margarine.
DO NOT STIR
A berry pie, a berry pie
I’m gonna make him a berry pie

It’ll look like this, with margarine floating on the top.
I wanna be the apple of his eye
So I’m gonna make him a berry pie

Pour in your berries.
Again, do not stir.
Eee-eye, a berry pie
I’m gonna make him a berry pie

Sprinkle just a little sugar over the top of it.
Eee-eye, a berry pie
I’m gonna make him a berry pie

Bake at 350 for 50-55 minutes.
I wanna give him presents so why don’t I
Show him my love in a berry pie

What blessings do you have in your life that have slipped your mind lately? Are your children healthy? Your Mama still living? Married to a good man and live in a home with electricity and running water? What are you going to be grateful for today that you forgot to be grateful for yesterday?
And most importantly, who do you love that you’re going to get to cook for soon? ~winks~
“Make the most of today. Get interested in something. Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby. Let the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you. Live today with gusto.”

oh goody. i want to be the first to comment. this looks delicious and easy. love it.
Hey hunny bunny, hows you?
Its really easy easy easy. When we gonna put you in the Southerner relocation program?

Christy
Hi C aka hunny bunny 2. i b jes fine.
Sooo… how do I sign up and who is in charge of this “Southerner relocation program”? To grease the wheel, I will bake “them” this cobbler, except for the past 20 years I have used blueberries in this recipe or homegrown peaches. (it is THE most requested dessert that I make, beside my Choc. Pecan Pie recipe found on Southern Plate. My sweet GA Mother in law gave these recipes to me as I married her son). Maybe if I make all of these desserts for the person in charge of relocation, THEN we can get something done about being so far from home. Nothing moves mountains like a homemade cobbler (or pie). ;-}
One of the things (of the many, many things) I am grateful for today is my kid’s teachers.
I’m so fortunate to have each child paired with teachers who really do love all of the children in their class. These women make each morning something that my children look forward to, because they both feel like they are welcome and loved in their classrooms.
One of many things to be grateful for….but its a start
My daughter is a first grade teacher (in her 2nd year of teaching). She truely LOVES all “her kids” and it is nice to know that there are teachers out there that do just that, especially in these trying times. I’m so thankful for a child who is doing what she loves, teaching our future!
I am blessed and thankful that my hubby and I both have jobs. He did not have a job from June to September. So that is what I am blessed with; jobs, children, good health, food on the table and love.
And I have some sliced peaches leftover, I gonna try this right now!
I love cobbler!
Oh that is wonderful! So happy for all of your blessings. The food on the table thing gets me every time I bake. I just can’t believe all of the bounty we have now that my ancestors could never have imagined.
I’m a cobbler person myself, hope you enjoy this! My mother makes it with peaches all the time
Gratefully,
Christy
I am sooooo incredibly grateful today for house appraisers. We found out yesterday that we’re buying a house for $14,000 less than our original offer because it was appraised lower, and we’re just so thankful for this! It will be a huge ease on our finances.
This cobbler looks so delicious. My daughter and I just made a cake this afternoon or I’d be pulling out some fruit and making this! Oh, that’s another thing I’m thankful for – my little 4-year-old loves to work in the kitchen with me. She loves tying on an apron and helping me to stir and measure when I’m cooking. Remember your post a while back where you suggested a baking kit as a gift for little kids? I did that for her birthday last Wednesday, we got her a pink mixing bowl, her own mixing spoons, a homemade apron, and several little baking mixes. She was so excited to get to use all her own stuff to make a little chocolate cake today, and I have you to thank for the awesome idea!
Oh Stephanie, I’m so happy for you! A new house!!! I know you’ll get that kitchen broken in really quick! lol
My four year old has really taken to helping in the kitchen a lot lately, too. Its kind of an eye opener for me, watching her so actively and openly try to immulate me. She says things like “Mama, when I grow up, I wanna be a Mama just like you and take care of my kids and cook fun things”.
She follows me around and wants to help with everything I do most days. She even wants to listen to my music so she can learn the words when we’re in the car together.
Its really humbling to know that my daughter looks up to me. Bless her heart for thinking I know what I’m doing! lol
Katy and I have matching aprons and she really loves that, too!
As my son is getting older, he is wanting to spend more time doing “guy things” with his dad and to see her willingly wanting to be left here so she can spend more time alone with me is just —wow. I don’t even know how to say how much it means to me. It also makes me remember when I was a girl and felt the same way about my Mama. In fact, I still wanna be her when I grow up.
Thank you so much for telling me about the junior baking kit. I’m so thrilled and honored that anything I did inspired you in any way!!!!
You make me feel like I have a reason
Gratefully,
Christy
Oh My,,,,Like I said, I was going to do it right now….well, one kid ate most of the peaches, so I didn’t have 2 cups, so I went and added 2 cups of frozen blueberries-proceeded as normal and it is already in the oven-lickity split-that is a fast one to put together!
thank you!
BLUEBERRIES?
Oh honey, open your front door quick or I might bust a hole through it trying to get in to your dining room table! lol
Please let us know how you liked it!
Gratefully,
Christy
This looks so good, I love cobblers!
I am thankful that I can drive my son an hour to the beach tomorrow, because he loves it so much!
Oh that sounds like such a lovely day!!! I hope you take pictures. What is the weather like where you are?
I’d love to be sitting on a beach watching the sunset right about now.
We’re hoping to take the kids somewhere tomorrow or Sunday but not sure where yet. Bradybug has a boy scout fishing tournament tomorrow so we’re going to try to plan something around that since we had so much fun daytripping last weekend!
Hope your day is amazing and beautiful,
Christy
ooooh yummy. I might have to pick up a bag of mixed berries and make this
This looks so good that my 5 year old son and I just had to make one! It is in the oven right now. Yum!! We used some frozen cherries. I can’t wait to taste it. Thanks for another great, easy recipe Christy!!
This is one of the first things my mom taught me to bake as a kid. I’ll always remember it as “Butter, Batter, Berries” as that is what she told me when making it. I recently made one of these with blueberries, one with peaches and one with blackberries – can you tell this is my favorite go-to quicky dessert to make? I think I’ll need to stop at the farmer’s market tomorrow and see what kind of good fruit I can find for this again tomorrow night. Yumm!
And as for grateful, I am so grateful that my husband insisted we pay our house off years ago (after 12 years of living in it) so we don’t have to worry about that these days. He is facing a possible layoff but with his wisdom and God’s help, we can easily get by on my salary. And I have my mom close by now and we are all healthy. What more can you ask for? Well, maybe some of this cobbler!
What a great name — BUTTER, BATTER, AND BERRIES.
Christy, You and my oldest daughter share the same name..I don’t think there is enough space to list everything I’m blessed with and thankful for..top of my list is a husband that is one-of-a-kind…God broke the mold after creating him !! After suffering a serious injury in an auto wreck my husband took family medical leave and took care of me for eight months..I was in hospital and rehab for 5 weeks before coming home and he was by my side every inch of the way. I have been left on crutches forever and he does all the floors, helps me change sheets, washes dishes often and much, much more. It has been 11 years since the accident and he is still helping me daily. I told you he was one-of-a-kind!!
I’m thrilled to have another cobbler type recipe. They are my favorite! I am grateful for your lovely site here. You are always so cheerful and optimistic. It is one of the main reasons I visit, and the yummy recipes of course! I am also grateful to have the opportunity to be a mommy. I also gave my daughter the junior bake kit last Christmas. It was definitely her favorite present. She was so excited to get to cook with me. Thanks again!
This looks wonderful, and I have all the ingredients, so I will be making this tomorrow!
This is such an easy cobbler recipe, and I love cobbler. I will have to buy some frozen berries tomorrow.
I am grateful for so much. I am grateful for my wonderful husband who loves me and is always taking care of me. I am also grateful for my good health. I’m a 7 year Ovarian Cancer survivor. We are also grateful that we were able to move to Alabama from New York and for our wonderful neighbors and friends here.
I’m going to make this for my Greek inlaws. They are all great cooks and I think they’ll love this! I won’t tell them how easy it is….it’ll be our little secret.
I’m thankful for my family – husband, son, brother, parents, and my inlaws. I just love my family.
My husband always says that “any day above ground is a good day.”
I always say that I thank God for dirty dishes – shows that we have plenty of food to eat – some folks aren’t that fortunate. Thank you Lord for my dirty dishes.
you must be a mind reader I was just looking for an easy cobbler recipe the other day and viola here is a great one. thanks. I have so much to be thankful for there isn’t enough room here so I will just slide on out.
Easier than pie and looks so homey good. I am going to have to invest in a bag of self rising flour. I have been cooking and baking for fifty years and I have never once tried it. I seldom hear anyone in this area that even talks about it and all purpose flour is always listed in local recipes. I know I can adapt regular flour to self rising with baking powder and salt. I just am finding it odd that so many of your southern recipes call for self rising and I don’t have any in my collection that do. It must be a regional thing.
just about to take mine out of the oven. I had some frozen blackberries but I think I was a bit short of 2 cups so I filled in with a few raspberries. Can’t wait!!
I’m grateful for my wonderful husband and daughter, they’re the greatest family a girl could ask for. Plus they eat my cooking
Thanks for another great recipe Christy!
Christie…my mother in law made a berry cobbler just like this one only she called hers Skillet Cobbler and she made it in a cast iron skillet….sooo good no matter what fruit she put in it! thanks for sharing and reminding that the simple recipes are the best!
Ok, apparently I’m the only one wondering (remember now – my mama didn’t teach me a thing about cookin! hehe) …. When you used the frozen berries, did you put them in the microwave frozen or let them thaw first? If you let them thaw did you drain off the juice? I’m assuming you used them straight from the bag, frozen, but I like clarification LOL
Nope. You’re not the only one wondering.
Hey!
Put ‘em in the microwave frozen and used juice and all! (didn’t drain).
It was delicious just like that!
Hope this helps!
Christy
Thanks, Christy. I’m on my way to the store right now. Cobbler tonight!
I made it this morning! And posted it on FB, if you haven’t seen that already! Oh it was so yummy! I’m grateful for YOU, Miss Christy Jordan!
I have been on a huuuuge blueberry kick lately & will be making this tomorrow! I really like cobblers but I’d recently found a Struesel mix at Kroger that was really good, really easy (mix +1 Tbsp water!),& really cheap (79¢!!) that you just put on top of a can of fruit-pie filling (well, in a dish, obviously) & bake for 25 min.
Bought it twice, haven’t been able to find it again! I think you should be able to buy streusel in a bag on the baking aisle! Do you have a good streusel recipe? I’m new to your site & I love it!
Hey Christy!
Greetings from Mississippi! This cobbler is what I used to call “Dump Pie” cause it is just all dumped in together and turns into a pie. I probably made my first one when I was about 10 years old. The best one I ever made was just a few months ago – used a can of tart cherries -it was so good! Great with Peaches too…and blueberries.
I guess now I am gonna hustle out to the kitchen and get us one in the oven for a late night smackdown!
( P.S…..my kids go through a quart of chocolate gravy every week it seems. They eat it on biscuits, pancakes, pound cake and straight out of the ball canning jar we keep it in! )
You make my day!
Lisa
A quart a week? Wow. How do you reheat it?
I made cobbler one time and I don’t think I like it, unless I didn’t make it right? I just find the top part is too floury and dry.
Hey Christy,
This is the same cobbler recipe I remember making all my life!! I usually use a can of peaches instead of the blackberries but the blackberries sound yummy, too!!! It is truly easy and yummy and made from things you already have on hand!!! YUM!!
Hi – I love this recipe. It is so easy and so good! Blackberry cobbler……it just doesn’t get any better. Oh! Maybe a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
It just gets better and better, christy! Hope we can get together soon!
I’m thankful my baby girl naps! and I’m thankful for pacifiers and fun blogs to read during said naps!!!
I am thankful for so many things…and I’m TRYING to be thankful for others. My husband was laid off and couldn’t find work from December 2008 until August of 2009. An uncle contacted him with the most incredible proposition…to run three of his businesses! Amidst the joy of getting the job, there was one agonizing requirement to go with it…we would have to relocate to another state, far away from all of my family. Now, I’m a family kind of gal. I have my parents still living at 81 and 76 years old, two daughters, two granddaughters and a whole slew of other relatives…all in two states far away from where we are headed. I have to admit. I am struggling with it all. I’m so thankful for the opportunity, I really am. But, I’ve lived in the state before, in the same place the business is located, and I was never happy there. The people are rude, the traffic is terrible and if a Southern girl like me is friendly, people get suspicious and pull away, wondering what I want from them. I cried a lot the whole time I lived there and was so thankful when God took us away from there. Now, He’s led us back. My husband has gone on ahead to work, while I stay here to pack up the house, take care of some business and help my daughter and granddaughter relocate after my daughter was laid off, as well. These are some very hard times!
I still ask God to help me with this transition and I know my attitude needs an adjustment. I ask for His will to be done in all of this. I know that I need to GROW…in many ways. So, perhaps, this is the growth opportunity that God has in mind for me…sending me back to a place I never grew before!
So, I remind myself daily that I can grow wherever God plants me, even on the rockiest ground, for the Sonshine reaches even the darkest of places!
Thanks for a wonderful website…the “foodie” in me is so grateful!
I can’t believe how easy that was!
Christy, the cobbler was GREAT! My husband absolutely loved it! I thought it was so very easy to make. I was just wondering if there is a way to subsitute the butter and sugar. I know it would not be the same . . .
Thanks – love reading – Judy
Christy, while reading my Taste of Home Newsletter online,I was grinning after reading “ohdollie” post a tip for the easiest way to freeze apples that stay nice and white. She said to visit “Southernplate.com”!!! So,if you get lots more hits, you can thank your freezing apples post! Happy Fall y’all!
Hi, thanks for posting this recipe! After trying several cobbler recipes and unhappy with all of them, I stumbled upon this site. My husband swears this is the best cobbler he has ever had in his life! I love your site and can’t wait to try many more of your recipes! He’s requesting peach cobbler for this week
Keep up the great work!!
