Awesome Oatmeal Cookies – High Maintenance, But Worth It!
You know, I don’t have a plan for anything I’m going to write on any given day on Southern Plate. I usually just wake up and see what I’m in the mood to talk about and run with it. Sometimes I can loop it into being related to that days recipe and sometimes I do things like write about doughnuts and give you a recipe for steak tips - we just roll with it and it all works out in the end somehow. We’re kind of a rag tag group that way and I like it.
Today I wanted to bring you this cookie recipe and seeing cookies got me to thinking about college – hang in there, I’ll come ’round the bend eventually.
My parents both graduated high school, this was a big thing for them and they were (understandably so) very proud of that. A lot of people back then didn’t finish school and they set out to have a goal of every one of us kids getting our high school diploma. They’d work it into daily conversation whenever they could, a parents natural inclination to brainwash their kids in the good ways. I can still hear mama saying “You’re going to be smart, and you’ll graduate high school”.
Folks who come from long lines of college education may not understand how much hope lies in a sentence like that but to my parents it was a goal and something they wanted for their kids, something that gave them the assurance of us having a good future and the start we needed to get going in the world.
College wasn’t even thought about. It wasn’t that they didn’t think we could do it, it was just that because high school was such a big goal for us that nobody thought to look beyond that.
When I did finally start college at the ripe old age (kidding here) of twenty three, it was the first time I’d ever lived on my own, even though I was in a dormitory with several hundred other girls. It was odd, the silence at night. When you’re used to a house filled with people, that silence is much louder than the noise you’re used to. I settled into my ritual of studying and having supper in the dorm cafeteria each night where, like so many other students, I’d head up to my room with a glass of milk and two cookies each night. I’d put my milk in the little dorm fridge and place my napkin wrapped cookies on top of it until almost bed time and then I’d have my snack just before turning in and enjoy my little taste of almost-home in my very silent dorm room.
Ever heard of the Freshman Fifteen? It’s the supposed fifteen pounds folks gain in their freshman year of college due to eating and lifestyle changes. Well, thanks to those cookies I personally pioneered the Junior Thirty.
And so a love of cookies was discovered and I ain’t stopped a lovin’ ‘em since.
I think my favorite cookie is oatmeal. At least that’s my favorite cookie today. We took a little road trip recently and I found myself near a Starbucks. Feeling like I needed a little treat (as Moms on road trips often do) I picked up one of their oatmeal cookies. I think Ricky thought I was having seizures as I ate that thing, it was so good. I came home and started digging around for the recipe. It was the absolute be all end all best oatmeal cookie I had ever tasted. Well glory be, wouldn’t you know that those folks had made that recipe public? I found it here. Tweaked it a bit, and here ya go.
Alright y’all, I know this list is a mile long but you know I wouldn’t go to this much trouble unless they were really really good.
You’re gonna need: Brown sugar, oats, raisins (golden and regular), dried cranberries, one egg, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, finely chopped nuts, stick of margarine, and a little bit of flour and white sugar.
GoodNESS That was a mouthful! It’s all at the bottom so just stick with me. These are really easy, the list is just long
Now we gotta talk substitutions.
- The original recipe called for the two types of raisins so I gave it a go because it would make a prettier picture for Southern Plate. If not for that, there is no way I’d go out and buy a special kind of raisins just for another color.
- Also, leave out the nuts if you like, I often do because they add a good bit of expense to things. The original recipe didn’t have them in it but I figured since I’d made a special trip to by “golden raisins”, I might as well go all out.
- I’m using old fashioned oats in this but if you only have quick oats that’ll work in a pinch. The key is to not make any special trips to the grocery store. It’s more fun when you adapt a recipe and use what ya got on hand anyways
. - As for brown sugar, use what you got, light or dark. i use them interchangeably but prefer dark whenever I have it. I honestly have no idea how I end up with light brown sugar in my pantry sometimes.
I’m just showing you an up close picture here of whats in my jars. I love mason jars for storage. They have so many uses and last forever. In a pinch they can be used as drinking glasses, storing leftovers in the fridge, and of course you can use them for canning, too.
In a mixing bowl place your softened margarine, brown sugar, and granulated sugar.
Mixaroo!
Toss in your egg and cinnamon.
I love it when kids can’t say that right. I think we should just rename it Cimmamon!
Mixaroo again!
Now in a separate bowl place your oats and your flour
and your raisins and dried cranberries.
and your nuts
Stir that up a bit
add in your salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
You know if I hada developed this recipe it would’ve been half the ingredients…
I’m jes sayin.
Stir that up
Dump it into your wet.
Mixaroni
Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
I feel like I have a photo of this in every post, do I ?
I reckon.
Take a few of each color raisin and place on top of the cookie.
This is for cosmetic purposes and is really pretty – but outside of this tutorial, I just put all of my raisins in the batter and skip over this step as I find it a little too fussy for my tastes.
But it is awfully pretty.
Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes.
Let sit on pan for two or three minutes and then remove to cool completely.
Of course, you’re gonna have to eat the first one, just to be sure they’re good.
Might not hurt to eat the second one as well, second opinions never hurt.
I made these last week and ended up making a second batch the very next day.
Seems we had a lot of volunteers to help eat them! Folks sure are sweet that way.

I really like this one…
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

wow that looks amazing warning to other readers do not click the oatmeal cooking picture while at work you are liable to drool on your keyboard, Christy you’ve done it again.
This isn’t my blog but its one you might apperciate
biscuitsandsuch.com
check it out you wont be dissappointed i believe i check it just about as much as i check yours Mrs.Jordan
i will, thank you!!!!!!!!!
Checked it out – seems like trying to be a CJ copycat without the humor and southern touch. Hey, but blogging is out there for everyone, so best of luck to her – have you ever checked out Molly Wizenberg’s ORANGETTE?
Let’s see if MR. BILL has an opinion on this one
You are just a “keeper” Christy.
It’s best to be careful about what you say about people on the internet, as those comments can always be found… even years later.
Also, my blog was started at the same time as Christy’s. It is very different yes, but I hardly think that “copycat” is an appropriate use of language. I’m just as southern and full of humor as anyone, try me.
Awesome cookies Christy. I’m sure they are delicious. If I can get rid of the three cakes my dad got for his birthday, I will surely make these but he’s had waaay too much sugar the past few days and had dang near worn his walker down to a nub. Sparks are flying from it.
it sounds all natual & exactly good for you ,, THIS IS A KEEPER !!!
Christy – these look like the bomb! I don’t drink coffee so I don’t frequent Starbucks too much – so to think – I could have missed these without you!!! Heaven forbid! I love oatmeal cookies! Thanks for sharing! Tracie
Oatmeal cookies are the best – and these look like they may be the best of oatmeal cookies. Though I may have to tinker and get some molasses in as well. Thanks for sharing.
The cookies look wonderful and I like your second opinion tasting philosophy. I sometimes find I have to complete a whole survey! LOL. I liked today’s quote as let’s face it-life is a series of detours.
I love mason jars too. Did you know about the pump and seal? it is a hand vacuum pump for food storage. I love mine! Keeps everything in my jars so fresh. I can buy giant packs of things at Costco now and still have them fresh!
And no, I am not a rep, or have any involvement, just a fellow mason jar lover. I thought you might want to check it out. I love your blog.
I use the blue antique jars for storage on my counters. I keep things like macaroni, spaghetti, another pasta, corn meal, oatmeal, etc. in them. Mine are all dated 1908, they had been my former mother-in-laws, but when I got divorced and divided our stuff up, I decided they belonged to me. When I first got them they had canned goods in them, and she never expected her jars back when they got empty, so I had stored them in the fruit cellar in back of my own homce canned goods for a few years and then decided to use them. It’s a good thing my “ex” wasn’t real observant when it came to certain things, or may it is more that he never knew where the jars came from. lol Looking back I think it was funny anytime I could pull something over on a cop who thought he was “God’s gift to the world.”
Hey, Christy. Just checked out biscuitsandsuch.com. It’s a nice website but Southern Plate still RULES! Keep up the great work. Love you, Phyllis
Ha HA haaaa! To hear you call it the Junior Thirty for college freshmen, that is too funny.
Imagine my surprise a few years ago, when I made some cookies along this line (without the raisins though) and my pre-teen came in from school and took a bite of the cooling cookies. My picky princess had eaten oatmeal and didn’t know it….she loved them!. Your cookie recipe looks delish and I know folks in SP land will enjoy getting to sneak some nutrition into dessert. Oh, and IF the cookie is broken, the calories spill out and don’t count. Thanks Christy.
~waves~ to Terri…next time I’m breaking up my cookies before I eat them!!
I made my oatmeal cookies yesterday and can’t keep my hands off of them!!! Then I see your recipe and will have to try these! I’m making the Shipwreck Casserole for supper. Can’t wait to have the smell in the house…..love to have good cookin’ smells.
Have a great day and “thanks” for all the good recipes, from a new friend in Las Vegas! We’re not in the “south” but we are in the southern part of the Nevada…does this count as “Southern”? I believe we can be in our hearts anyways!
Hi Kolene, welcome to the S.P. family! “Southern” part of Nevada?…sure it counts…I’m from “Southern” Connecticut!!! In our hearts for sure!
My absolute favorite cookie is oatmeal raisin (would take them in a heartbeat over chocolate chip). The craisins in this recipe are a bonus, like them too. Thank you Christy for another great springboard recipe.
I bet these would also be tasty with chopped dried apples or apricots in lieu of the raisins.
Oh, Christy! Your photos turned out so beautifully! And the cookies look extremely yummy, too! I will try them soon. Have a great day!
Oh, and by the way, those golden raisins, if you have any left over, are just incredible in zucchini muffins, along with walnuts-yum!
They do look purty! And I’m with you, I don’t like high-maintenance recipes either. But if I were making these for a special occasion or to give away, then I would go the extra mile.
Oh Christy…these look delicious! This week I have already made your Chocolate,Chocolate Chip Cookies and Dishpan Cookies! I’ve shared them but will admit I sure ate more than I intended to!! Aren’t 3 Dishpan cookies a serving?
I have a weakness for them and am almost afraid to try the Awesome Oatmeal!!~giggle~
Drinking delicious(thanks to you)sweet tea out of a wide mouth mason jar as I type this!I love to use them for my drinking glasses!
Bountiful Blessings to you!
Got to try these cookies out real soon!! I do not like cookies except for oatmeal ones!!But I do make cookies all the time for the family. Can you tell me how you got the red lettering on your glass containers? I found the re lidded containers and love them but want the words flour and suger on them like yours!!!! Thank you so much
I promised my students we would make some cookies in a solar oven before the end of the school year and this looks like a *keeper* of a recipe! thX
Christy, you are just so cute!…lol…I loved all ur little mixaroo, and mixaroni! That just cracked me up!
Christy, you really stirred up memories of my brand spanking new sister-in-law when you talked about you mother. She always said “if you graduate from high school” to her three children, and it bothered me enough that I asked her to think about saying “when you graduate from high school.” Without hesitation and with a wonderful smile, she changed, and her boys did too. They all grew up knowing that they would graduate before they decided on what they would do in life.
Such a little change — one word — and such a big difference. Thanks for the memories.
Sorry. Make that “your mother.” I was in such a hurry to comment that I didn’t reread my comment.
Oh I’m thinking I might have to make these for the adults tonight….when I put oatmeal in anything the kids won’t eat it.(not that I’m complaining much).
Thanks for another great looking recipe!
Also, did you know there are no calories in the first cookie that you have to taste test?
I have everything in my kitchen to make these except for the oats.
Don’t like the dark raisens as much as the Golden Sweets which I keep all the time. I will stir up the ones I have into the cookies.
I will keep 2 or 3 of them and give the rest away. I would eat them all if they were around and I can’t dare gain all my weight that it took me a year to lose 3 or 4 years ago. I eat anything I want but small portion size or I start creeping up. I am sure these are wonderful because they have everything I like in them.
Betty, I also keep only the golden raisins. About eating them, I use oatmeal to keep my cholesterol down. Needless to say, cooked oatmeal gets boring and I dont like flavors in mine. So, my DOCTOR suggested I take an oatmeal cookie recipe and see how many cookies I would have to eat to make a serving of oatmeal. It was 4. I use cooking Splenda in the recipe for sugar and made a bunch for senior independent living last year. Had to end up making 6 batches… they took the recipe and use it now instead of all the harmful cholesterol lowering drugs. We worked on using oatmeal in meatloaf and many other foods as well. So, eat and enjoy!
These do look delicious! I am searching for the perfect oatmeal cookie. I made the Quaker recipe and it is on my website. They were very good but flat. Then I made the Barefoot contessa’s recipe and they were totally awesome especially after I added 1 extra cup of oatmeal to the recipe. That made them stand up a bit without melting down into a flat disc on the baking pan. I will try this recipe also! I like the idea of using two different raisins. Thanks for sharing!
Christy-
Ever use one of your Mason jars on your blender? Just put nuts, etc. in the jar and screw on the business end of the blender pitcher (if it fits, of course;many do) and buzz away. Great for small batches.
Pete
what type flour please? just checking. i am not a seasoned cook.
Hey Patti!
I’m so sorry about that, I knew I was forgetting something!
I went in and put it up there, all purpose.
Thank you so much for pointing this out!
Gratefully,
Christy
Christy, your intro to the cookie recipe brought tears to my eyes. Growing up in west Tennessee at probably about the same time your parents grew up made your post so nostalgic. I remember that goal of finishing high school. Three years later, I also went to college. It was like a dream. Today, I still marvel at the good fortune mingled with scrimping and saving and hard work that brought it about. Oh, how grateful I am for you and for me. WE are blessed by this and soooooo much more.
Amen, Janie, Amen!
Hi, I just signed up during the week- already a great recipe to try.
I thought I would send you a quicker, easier way to print recipes.
If you do the same highlighting that your FAQ explains, you can simply go to File, Print, when the printer window opens, check the “selection” box and then hit “Ok”. This will print only the selected text on the page.
Chris, I didn’t know about that! thank you!!!
Do you happen to know if its just Windows 7 that does that or do all of them? I gotta go check it out now!
Gratefully,
christy
P.S. Great to have you here!
Chris,God bless you, I learned something new today, this is a short cut to what I’ve been trying to do. Thanks!!!
Hi Christy–
I saw this recipe for these cookies this morning and just had to make them and they are soooo good!! I like the fact they don’t have a ton of flour in them, so I think they’d make a good breakfast cookie (any excuse to eat cookies for breakfast ;P) I have been using the oatmeal date cookie recipe from Martha Stewart as my standard go-to oatmeal cookie for years but I think I just found my new go-to! Hmmm..I think coconut might be really good in these…and maybe chocolate chunks?
And I just want to tell you what a fantastic resource you are, I just found you a month or two ago and I’m on here everyday looking at recipes..well, not just looking, I’ve made lots of them and they are all really really good. So thank you so much for all you do, you seem like Superwoman to me, I don’t know how you accomplish all that you do!
Southern food is my weakness so thank you too for the last few pounds I’ve gained LOL
Have a great weekend,
Maggie
Fort Worth TX
Girl, you are a woman after my own heart with the breakfast cookie idea! Makes total sense, too, I mean they are healthier than a lot of stuff out there for breakfast and surely have less sugar and more “good stuff”!
Thank you so much for your kindness!!! If I seem like superwoman, let me assure you I’m paddling like mad underneath ! I am likely the most unorganized person you will ever meet ~looks at the laundry mountain and sighs~
Hope to get to meet you when I come to Texas for the book!!!!
in the meantime, WELCOME, I sure am glad you’re here!
Gratefully,
Christy
Christy, can’t wait til you come to Fort Worth! It would be a great pleasure to meet you!! And there are some fantastic places to eat here, and wonderful Texas music, you will love it!
Thanks for the warm welcome
this place felt like home the first time I came here…
Maggie
Oh Hi!
I just wanted to pop over and tell you how pathetic you are for blocking my comments on your Facebook page. Why, you can’t stand it when ‘lil ole me tells it like it is? You can sugarcoat it until it’s dripping and sickening (which you do!!) but the fact of the matter is, you STILL love to brag and gloat. I mean for God’s sake, who else other than you would actually NAME their moderately priced, cookie cutter, subdivision home? lmao. How sad you are.
Anyway, I’m sure you’ll moderate this and it will never be seen. But at least you’ll read it, and that makes me happy enough ~smiles sweetly~
Baby, has anyone ever hugged you?
I’m thinkin’ we need to start us a “Hug Stephani” movement here.
~hugs~
Have a good Mother’s Day weekend!
Gratefully,
Christy
Hi Christy,
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. What a shame to have someone actually put it in writing to express such negative thoughts and nastiness. All about a website with recipes and simple instruction that is not only free, YES FREE!, but takes sooo much of your time away from your children and husband. I appreciate you and all that you do with so much effort for other people and their benefit. The way I see it, that woman doesn’t have to read your writings, ever. Goodbye small-minded little woman, be gone.
Well said Terri!!
Hey Christy… if I could I would just jump into “Big Red” right now and head over to “Bountiful” and give you the biggest hug and thank you for all you do for your family here at Southern Plate!! <3 you bunches!
pardon my typo!! LOVE YOU!
Poor girl needs more than hugs.
Lots of LOVE and HUGS to CHRISTY – especially for Mother’s Day weekend – you make most of us mothers, and MR. Bill Gent and any other “gents” who read you, smile and enjoy our lives much more. I bless the day my cousin introduced me to Southern Plate.:-)
Christy, pay her no mind, she has that terrible disease, JEALOUSY! Love ya Christy!! Hugs~Laurie
Stephani,
I’m sorry you are so angry at Christy. I can’t imagine why. She is sweet and she brings joy to people. I’m sorry your heart is so jaded and full of anger. I will pray that you will find happiness someday. God Bless you.
Stephani,
You poor child. May God bless your tiny little heart.

~a moderately priced cookie cutter house in the heart of Levittown, a home full of love and joy…sorry if that sounds like bragging and gloating,Oh wait..no I’m not!
My parent told me about how many of their classmates don’t finishe highschool.
Glad for this post today I am at my Dad’s and wanted to make him some oakmeal cookies and there you were — yummy they — was it okay to add coconut to you allready fab cookies — well I hope so because I did — my Dad loves oatmeal cookies with coconut! Thanks again for the story.. Have a wonderful restful Mother’s Day — okay!
Please give your dad a big old hug for me. I LOVE COCONUT. I made some more of these last night and now I want to make them again! HOw did they turn out?
It’s always wonderful when someone takes a recipe and makes it their own!
Gratefully,
Christy
O forgot to tell you my Dad also eats these cookies for his breakfast when they are around — giggle — how sweet is that!
I was all fired up for these Awesome Oatmeal Cookies, even though I am packing for a weekend away- woe is me I don’t have most of the ingredients. So, I’ll just have to drool until Monday. Poor me!
On another note- the rude woman who posted before should leave SP and get a life. We love you Christy and we’ve got your back. You are Awesome just like you cookies.
Ann Marie
Hey ya’ll, these look awesome. Have not been to Starbucks in months. Just saving some $$. Don’t drink coffee, I like their Green Tea Fraps and Lemon bread…now that is a recipe I would love to have!!
Talking about Mason jars, while we were living in Elkmont, AL the WalMart there in Athens had jelly from some place out of Texas, can’t remember the name brand, that was jarred up in little Mason like jars with handles. In the 2 years that we lived there I got enough for each of our grown children to have 6 each and of course we have a dozen for home lol…..Think we ate alot of jelly and jam? lol….our favorite was the Blackberry which we could only find in the WalMart in Pulaski TN, just over the AL/TN line.
Thanks for the recipe, gotta try them out. Hugs~Laurie
They look delicious!! Honestly I’m shocked Starbucks could have something our Christy would approve of! Of course I’m certain this version, since it was tweaked by you, is MUCH better than theirs and thusly it is deserving of a place on SP.
Thanks once again for sharing something so wonderful with all of us!!
Oatmeal cookies are my mom’s favorite, so these were a big mother’s day hit! Well worth it!
People, make these NOW. They have some sorta crack in them, I swear, because I can’t say out of them. LOL I whipped some up last night for my hubby to take on a trip with him today and the ones I kept for me are almost gone. And no, I will NOT say how many I kept. They’re not fussy at all and came together super quick! These are my new favorite cookie.
Hi, Christy. I made some of these cookies yesterday (without extra raisins on top) and they’re delicious. My new favorite oatmeal cookie recipe. : )
PS I love people who name their homes and cars.
OOOHhhh Mmmm Geee these are good good good. thanks so much for the recipe.
i made these cookies yesterday! thanks so much for the recipe ;o)
i doubled the recipe; i didn’t have golden raisins, so i used half dark raisins & half cranberries to equal the quantity, and I used 3 types of nuts because i had a little left in each my bags of walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts… i probably used more nuts than it called for (just over 2/3C, for the doubled recipe)
the recipe is flexible enough for changes! delish!
thanks again!
These sound delicious and will be bakin and smelling my kitchen up soon!!! I have one question for you that has nothing to do with these cookies or maybe it does,
Cooking all these wonderful recipes how do you stay so beautiful and you look like you’re in shape. I gain weight just looking at these. I am trying to lose and this is sooooo hard. You must have a wonderful metabolism or just are constantantly moving, or can resist. Phew I’m out of breath!!! Part of my problem is I Love Cookbooks and have to try things now and then,
And if I had the talent you do I’d brag and gloat or whatever that person up there said you did. You are such a natural and anyone can see that… this is what you were chosen to do in your life, Yeah!!!!
[...] Awesome Oatmeal Cookies [...]
Oatmeal Raisin cookies are the best in the world, well as long as they are home made. I have to say I have my favorite recipe, it used to be on the top of the oatmeal box and was called “Jenny’s Oatmel Cookies” so that must be why I liked them so much. It calls for 2-1/2 sticks of margarine. They have since changed the recipe (less butter)(and changed the name, how rude), but it isn’t as good. Thank goodness I kept that old recipe. I’ve never found another recipe I like as well, but since I trust you Christy I am going to try this one. I will leave out the nuts though. Thanks for the recipe!
Jenny in Florida
Christy, I will have to try your recipe. I’ve been using the recipe under the lid on the oatmeal box. I measure out 3 cups of the oats and then “pulse” them so they are fine. My husband loves them this way and I do too.
Keep those recipes coming!!!! And don’t pay any attention to negative comments. Life is too short.
Christy, you are the golden raisin in the oatmeal cookies of life! Thank you for all you do and are to give such good gifts of cheer and fun recipes. So glad I discovered you
Thank you & hugs to your family for sharing you!!
I would love to buy the cookie decal only. I have purchased the set for myself earlier, but would love to make a cookie jar and fill it for Christmas gifts.
Is is possible ?
Thanks,
Cheri
When I saw your heading of “awesome oatmeal cookies,” my first thought was that I hoped that they were as good as the “outrageous” oatmeal cookie recipe that I use from the Washington Post. Should I have doubted Christy? Never! It’s the exact same recipe. They’re excellent and I’ll be whipping them up tonight. I love this site. Thank you!
As usual I love your posts and they always remind me of something from my childhood. Neither of my parents were able to finish high school and we were raised like you with them setting a high value on us kids getting a high school education. I can remember never wanting to get anything less then a B on my report card because my Dad would seem so disappointed and he would tell us all about how he had to stop going to school to help make an income with his dad to support the family. My Dad passed away when I was in junior high but before he died he made my mom promise that she would do whatever it took to make sure us four kids all graduated high school and I’m happy to say we did and some of us even went on to get a higher education. This is why we love your posts so much Christy – it’s not just about the cookies or the cakes or delicious recipes that you bring us that take us back to our childhood memories or enable us to make new ones with our kids and grandkids – you create a kinship with your readers with your stories and anecdotes. Always clever and funny and always something in them that tugs at your heart’s memories. If I never cooked another day in my life I would still want to get my newsletters from you so I could always remember to slow down and look into my heart’s memories.
Hi Christy,
I love your stories and this recipe looks divine. I wish you would get the recipe from Giant Eagle for their Honey Granola cookie…. I thought I was going to make Mud Hens for the cookie exchange, then came Dishpan cookies. I knew I had my cookie…then comes along Pecan Nougat…Yeah Baby! Now Awesome Oatmeal Cookies…I can’t take it! But, I think its a done deal…until tomorrow’s post. Keep’em coming!
I made the ‘Dishpan cookies’ and they are wonderful.
Can’t wait to make these! (Can you get us a recipe for the Cranberry Bliss bars at Starbucks, too?)
