Miss Mary Anne’s Twinkie Cake
WELCOME to Southern Plate! I’m so thrilled to have you here, my only regret is that I can’t give you a hug through the computer! Sit back, get comfy, and sit a spell because you’re a grand addition to the family. If you like, you can subscribe via email just to make sure you never miss a post! Gratefully, Christy
Today I’m bringing you a recipe from a member of our Southern Plate family, Miss Mary Anne. A few weeks ago she sent me a message
and asked if I’d ever had twinkie cake. I messaged her back that I’d heard of it but never had or made it myself and I sure would love her recipe if she’d be willing to share! Being as sweet as she is, she emailed it right away and I got the ingredients and made it the very next day for my mother and father in law. It was every bit as delicious as Miss Mary Anne said it would be and when I asked her if she’d mind if I shared it she replied “I would be glad for you to share it, it’s too good to keep.”
Miss Mary Anne says “I watched my aunt make this at a family reunion many years ago when my youngest was just a baby. He is now 46 years old!”
Thank you, Miss Mary Anne, for allowing me the honor of sharing your recipe with the rest of the Southern Plate Family!
You’ll need: Twinkies (I was going to get the generic ones but they were out), Bananas, the big thing of whipped topping, the big thing of pudding mix, the big can of crushed pineapple, and some cherries and chopped nuts for the topping.
I’ll put the actual sizes at the bottom in the recipe.
You know when I went to buy these bananas I bought thirteen bananas and it was only $2.23? Isn’t that amazing?
One of the reasons why I love recipes that use bananas so much, you can be generous and there is no guilt!
I love to get the little bags of this nut topping when I can. It comes in a bag or a can (brand has never mattered to me at all) and it makes the prettiest top on the cake. It is totally optional though.
Slice each twinkie in half lengthwise
Place the cream side up in a 9×13 inch pan.
You’ll only need nine twinkies for this and the box comes with ten.
Miss Mary Anne says that last one is to enjoy with your coffee
.
Christy says Miss Mary Anne is wise beyond her years
Next, you’re gonna mix up your pudding. I’m using sugar free pudding mix.
Now some people will tell you that using sugar free is kinda pointless when you are basing this whole shabang on twinkies. If anyone tells you that, just stick out your tongue at them. Wink afterward so they know you don’t mean no disrespect
.
By using sugar free pudding and light whipped topping we’re cutting out a lot of calories here.
Besides, I think as adults we need to stick out our tongue and wink more. So that is your homework assignment for today, to do both of those things at some point. ~giggle~
Mix up your pudding with your milk according to package directions.
You can also use skim milk in place of whole if you like. I prefer whole milk because we don’t actually drink a lot of milk. I mainly use it in baking and add a splash to my coffee so I prefer the richness of whole milk. Skim milk always reminded me of milky colored water.Trust me, I’ve drank enough skim milk in my life to earn hat splash of whole in my coffee.
Spread that pudding over the top of your twinkies.
Now dump your crushed pineapple over the top of your pudding.
Um..uh oh. Miss Mary Anne said to drain the pineapple before you do this, she said drain but not press dry, which means a little moisture is fine. I kinda skimmed over that part because of that whole attention-span-of-a-gnat thing I got going on. It turned out fine but I suggest you follow Miss Mary Anne’s instructions.
Spread the pineapple around a bit.
Slice up a WHOLE BUNCH of bananas over the top of that. Isn’t it pretty?
If you only have a few bananas that is fine, use as many or as few as you want.
Now spread whipped topping over the top of that. Cover and refrigerate several hours.
I served each slice with a nut topping and cherry. Isn’t it pretty?
Thank you Miss Mary Anne! This was absolutely delicious!

I’ve used this one before but I find that the good ones could always stand to be repeated.

Oh my..I gained 5 pounds just reading the recipe! ?This is on my list to make for the end of bible school cookout next week. Thank you for sharing it with us.
So I have just made this dessert to take to my office tomorrow – I know it is going to be a HIT…..(did I mention I work in a Surgical Weight Loss Center?) Oh well, just because we work there don’t mean we can’t EAT it….Anyway, I put the dessert together from the printed recipe – then sat down and looked at the pictures and saw that I had not put it in the correct order. I agree with others after reading the comments – I don’t think it will matter. I will post later to let everyone know how the office staff enjoy it……thanks for the recipe – keep them coming…..
OK – so the cake was a total Hit at work yesterday. After eating it at lunch yesterday – I think that I would rather put it together the way the pictures show – rather than the way the printed recipe says. The reason for me saying this is because the moisture from the pineapple does seep into the cakes and they are not of cake texture by then. So the next time I make it – I will layer the pudding over the Twinkies, then start with the fruit and end with the Whipped Topping. Thanks again for the recipe – I had to share it with others in the office.
Looks like an easy and fun, cool and refreshing recipe! Thanks Miss Mary Anne for sharing with us and thanks Christy for the fun facial expression tutorial that I am sure I can put to immediate use with my bossy family members! Tee-Hee I can’t wati to make this one and looks like it will be a keeper for sure!
Sure glad you reminded us to take the Twinkies out of the wrappers.
I just came from Wal-Mart where I went to get the ingredients to make this for tomorrow night’s covered dish dinner at church. They had Limited Time Only Twinkies with strawberry filling. I’m going to try it this time and see how it works. The strawberry creme on the box looked so good. I will let you know how it tastes. I hope everyone enjoys the Twinkie Cake as much as we have through the years.
Oh how neat with strawberry filling on twinkies. I had been thinking about putting chopped cherries inside to give it more color but the strawberry would do the same. Great idea. The puding definitely on the bottom in that case I think. only problem is I sure like pudding next to bananas like in banana pudding. but they might be better on top where the whipped “cream” is. This sounds very similar to banana split cake.
This looks like my kind of recipe!
I can’t wait to try it…just wish I could grab a bite thru the computer!
So funny you post about Twinkies today… I was at a farm stand today and they they had the cutest chocolate covered Twinkies for sale. They were completely covered in chocolate and had colored sprinkles on top. They were in individual baggies with ribbon ties. Wouldn’t that make the cutest little Christmas gift?? Or, I bet it would sell great at a Bake Sale. I wonder how hard it is to get them covered in chocolate?? I’m thinking you might put them on a wire rack, bottom side up and cover the bottom in chocolate & let cool. Then, turn them over and pour chocolate over the top?? I don’t know how you would hold on to them if you dipped them in a bowl of melted chocolate. Christy, why don’t you figure out how to do this and post it?
Yes, in my recipe the bananas and pineapple are put on top of the Twinkies and then the pudding. But I think Christy’s way would work just as well. The recipe says, “Layer sliced bananas, pineapple, pudding, and Cool Whip over Twinkies in that order. ” Bananas first, then pineapple, then pudding and last Cool Whip. But the thing I like about Christy and her recipes is that she puts her own “tweak” to them and that makes them special. Who made a rule that says everybody has to do it the same way??
Lol! I mustve read it wrong miss Mary Anne! I’m so sorry!
I have a bad tendency to glance, skim, and run off to the kitchen!!
OOOH!!! I was thinking how moist it would be if you put pineapple down over the twinkies and let the little bit of juice soak into the twinkies. Oh the possibilities this recipe can have.
this reminds me of banana split cake except the bottom layer is crushed graham crackers instead of twinkies
My oh my! That looks delicious!
This looks like my new favorite dessert, and i’m w/Christy, to use sugar free pudding and sugar free cool whip….It this point in my life, i have to save all the calories i can….lol
The bananas and pineapple coming before the pudding makes sense. That way, the juice from the pineapple coats the bananas and keeps them from getting brown and then any extra moisture sinks into the Twinkies to flavor them. The pudding and Cool Whip then keep the whole thing nice and moist – at least until you cut it. lol
You can probably do a similar thing with a white or yellow cake for a base and then put on said toppings.
Christy,
This looks positively scrumptious, I can’t wait for an occasion to make this one. Hey, I may not wait for an occasion. It looks like rain here so that’s good enough for me. Now let me get going to the store and buy some twinkies : )
Thank you! Miss Mary Ann for sharing this recipe with us! You’re an angel. It reminds me a bit of a banana split cake that my aunt made years ago for some of our reunions. It was always a big crowd pleaser. I think I still have the recipe stashed somewhere. I had forgotten all about it till now. Thanks again!
Blessings,
Sheila
Thanks Miss Mary Anne. How nice of you to share. This looks delicious! This will be the perfect dessert to take to a dinner this weekend. I know it will be a hit and everyone will want the recipe. I have never seen this recipe before!
Blessings to you and Christy, too!
Pam
Thanks Miss Mary Anne and Christy for sharing this yummy dessert with us. It will be a cool dessert for us. The weather here is 92 degrees with Humidty to match it. Cool desserts are a blessing. Thank you again
Susan
What size can of pineapple is used. The recipe says large, is that the 20 oz size?
First I want to thank Miss Mary Ann for sharing, I want her to know this is not just a regular thank you but a very big thank you. My Mother something like them when I was a youngster. I think she used pound cake and whipped cream. The recipe has been lost. Now I can have them some more. I have winked and stuck my tong out at the monitor. Did you see me do that.

Looks yummy!
I read a quote today…hope you enjoy!
“Don’t tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon!”
My sister has made this recipe for years. It is delicious. You can get the sugar free twinkies for all you diabetics. It is easy and simple and always a crowd pleaser. Thank you for reminding me of this recipe.
Christy, I really, really enjoy making your recipes, but when I read the instructions here, it’s so much fun. It’s like being in the kitchen with you. Girl, you’re a mess, (she says as she sticks out her tongue and winks):)
Oh – this sounds perfect for our family get together this weekend!!! Yummo!!! I never keep Twinkies in the house cuz they talk to me (eat me……eat me………) but I can sure find them and everything else I need at the grocery store!! Christy, I looked in our Walmart today for the potatoes you used in your easy potato salad recipe and couldn’t find any!!! Is that a southern thing or what??? I want some…….guess it wouldn’t work to mail them to me, huh???
Marlene, I had a hard time finding them also. They were on the very bottom shelf. I also found another off brand that had the cubed hash browns. As long as they are cubed, they will work.
This will be a good one to do with my grandkids. My 8 year old loves pudding. My 4 year old can’t have nuts (peanut allergy), but nuts are optional.
The Twinkies remind me of a friend of ours who is overweight. Several years ago he had a heart attack. My husband rushed to the hospital to see him and they let him back to the restricted area because he is a minister. He found our friend lying on a gurney. The first thing our friend said was that if we had any money in Twinkies stock we had better take it out because the company would go broke since he wouldn’t be able to eat Twinkies anymore. Now *that *is really in the spirit of sticking out your tongue and winking!
Can’t wait to try this. Thank you Miss Mary Anne for sharing your recipe. Barbara White – thanks, I didn’t know you could get sugar-free twinkies.
HEY CHRISTY! The recipe doesn’t tell what KIND of pudding. In the pictures it looks like Vanilla, but better add something to the written recipe. Thanks and can’t wait to try it.
Thank you! Soon as I get the coffee brewing I’ll fix that! Sure fo appreciate it!
Gratefully

Wonder what it would taste like with chocolate pudding, or coconut cream or butterscotch……..hmmm. I made this earlier today, just like you said, and it is now sitting in the fridge for potluck tonight. It is 105 degrees today here in Az. and it was sooo nice to see this recipe for a no bake dessert! Thank you, Christy! And Miss Mary Anne!
I may try it today when our grandaughter and her little boy come over to help us paint, I think they would love to make this together. It sounds delicious.
Well since I hadn’t decided what I was bringing to Bunco tonight, I think I have my recipe. Thanks Mary Anne for sharing, thanks for demoing and posting Christy. After everyone’s comments, I think I’ll try the order from the original recipe. I like moist cake.
Happy Cooking Everyone!
My Aunt Mary made this too! She worked in the school cafeteria and was always bringing some creation to our family get-togethers. She loved feeding kids; loved people and feeding them and had this great capacity for laughter. Thanks for the memory.
Thanks Miss Mary Anne for sharing! I’ve got company comin’ and this will work out fine!!! AND… thanks Christy for the print button… my middle fingers had indentions from writing so much. ( got that cookbook ordered; take care of that!)
MMMmmmmmmmmMMMM!!!!
Siiiiiiiiiiiiigh………………………………………maybe ONE spoonful(ladle) won’t hurt.
We are having a birthday party around the pool for my brother’s new fiancee this weekend.Usually the kitchen is so hot from cooking that guests can hardly stand to go in to use the bathroom, haha. This looks wonderful and will keep a little heat out .Thanks for another wonderful recipe.Reminds me a little of a banana split.
I made this today and it is De-Lish and so light and refreshing! Thanks again Miss Mary Anne and Christy!! Big Hugs!
I didn’t try it yet but what’s not to like?. And the beauty of it is, it makes a great take-a-long cake to church or family get together. It is easy to remember what you need, you usually have them and last but not least, I can fool around with it, using canned oranges, strawberries, peaches,,, instead of pineapple and even change the topping to crushed toffee bars maybe. Oh yeah, I like this. Thanks Mary Anne and Christy. : )
What neat creative thinking Eve. Could do with strawberries and blueberries and bananas and pudding for a 4th of july dessert even. Blueberries and strawberries seem to e at a decent price now. Must be California harvest season. here in Fl we have to wait for Nov. or December for that. We have strange season for growing and summer is usually too hot.
this sounds so yummy!! any cahance anyone has a recipe for caramel ho ho cake? had this at a church function. very good . no chocolate in it.
How did you have caramel ho ho cake without chocolate? I thought hoho’s were chocolate covered treats. Am i thinking of something else?
So we have another good recipe. Sounds like it’s so easy, but folks will think you spent a lot of time in the kitchen.
Thank you Miss Mary Anne.
Seems like my grocery list is getting longer and longer, just with things I need to try some of your great recipes. lol
I made this for supper tonight! It was soooooo good that I can’t imagine it will taste even better tomorrow! Thank you Miss Mary Anne and thanks to Christy for publishing it!
I am lovin this print button. So handy.
I have had something very similar, which was very tasty, but this one looks and sounds oh so much better. The combo of bananas and pineapple….it doesn’t get much better than that! I can’t wait to make this very soon!
Hey, Twinkies now has for a limited time “Strawberry” filled Twinkies. Got a box & going to make this awesome dessert. Wil be substitute the bananas for strawberries. Can’t wait to make it.Thanks Christy for your great detailed pictures of how to put the recipe togther!!! Thanks.
Why exchange strawberries for bananas? Just add strawberries too. That will give it the color it is missing but still ahve the good taste of bananas and the texture.
I made this lasy night ….It was wonderful.. The family loved it and I ate some for breakfast this morning
Thank you so much for sharing
Marian
that should be last night..
We went to a family reunion on Saturday, and my teenage daughter made this – it was a hit! She’s already getting requests for the recipe. I know she’ll make it again!
Christy-
I made this cake this weekend and it is a new favorite at our house!! I looks so forward to your posts each day. We love the fire and ice salad and the peach icecream too! Love you!!!!!!!! So glad I found your website!
My 4 year old daughter and I made this for dinner tonight! Can’ t wait to try it
YAY!!! I bet she was so proud, as well she should be!!!!!! You ROCK for having her in the kitchen with you! There is nothing I love more than seeing little ones light up with confidence at having made something for their families like this.
Gratefully,
Christy
Did you know that Amazon has a chef’s hat and apron for kids and is about $8 or so plus shipping. I got a book for kids cooking with Mom as well and my granddaughter loved them. She was so excited and made potato mice for her family’s dinner. Tail is green onion. Nose was cherry tomato. Her older sisters cooked the potatoes for her. You might want to check out Bento Box and the lunches for kids when they start school. They are decorative and so much fun to eat. My daughter fixed 3 little pigs (eggs) with their houses, fruit bricks, pretzel sticks and sprouts for straw and celery roofs and doors of cheese or lunchmeat or fruit roll. That took quite a bit of time to make but can do things ahead. It is such for for my granddaughter to help cook as well.
I’ll bet you could toss in a handful of mini chocolate chips with one of those layers. Great summer no bake idea. Thanks, Miss Mary Anne & Christy!
Yum Yum-I really cant wait to make this one—I have never been disappointed by any receipe from your website-thank you too Miss Mary Anne-
I made this cake this week and took it to a Senior Citizen lunch at church. Everyone loved the cake and they cleaned the pan. I cut the cost a little by using Little Debbie Twinkielike cakes.
I read your blog everyday and would invite you to visit me at yellow6347.wordpress.com for some West Virginia tales.
You know, I saw some “twinkie like” red velvet snack cakes at the store today.
I wonder…………………………………..
A new classic for our family beach vacations — nothing to cook, just “assemble”. But the little girls (ages 4 and 6, this year) got to make the pudding. Oh, and I used a storebought pound cake rather than Twinkies, we added coconut and some chocolate syrup to the toppings buffet and it was a BIG HIT!!! Thanks, Miss Mary Anne!!!!
I am realizing how many versions you can get in this one. Coconut and chocolate sound good too but If I did all the things that sound good, I’d have a 2 ft tall cake and it might not stand up there.
But every version sounds so good.
miss mary anne ,
I ‘m gonna make this . and I am bnot a southern gal , i am a NEW ENGLANDER, I can’t wait to make this , I think the devil made you post this!! lol
cathyb
Miss Mary Anne,
I have to tell you that I made this last night to take to the nurses today for my infusion. It was a hit and they were eating it for breakfast and then I saw them eating it at lunch. They each came to my room to tell me how delicious it was. I made it without trying it first so I have to take their word for it.
Oh I did add two cans of pineapple as it didn’t look like one can would be enough.
Thanks for the wonderful recipe and making me a hit today. LOL
Wonderfully yummy recipe! Everyone loved it! Can’t wait to try some more of your recipes! Thanks for sharing with us!
