Bill Gent’s Doggie Biscuits

Bill Gent, one of our beloved Southern Plate family members and someone whom I have personally adopted as my long lost brother, offered to do a post on how to make homemade doggie biscuits. I love and adore Bill and I know y’all do, too, so I lovingly told him to get on it and get it to me STAT! (Can someone tell me what STAT stands for? I have no idea.) So here is Brother Bill with his post. We are both adoptive parents of precious dog babies and I’m claiming Mama’s privilege for both of us as we brag on our canine babies in photos at the bottom! I’d like to invite you to brag on your four legged babies at the bottom, too! What are their names, where did they come from, tell us as much as you’d like! Take it away, Bill! Gratefully, Christy

Hello Margaret, It’s me again! (Google that phrase if it’s confusing to you) I’m back again to regale you with another post.  Since I just became a daddy to a new Australian Cattle Dog, I asked Christy if I could do a post about homemade dog biscuits and she agreed. As I grew up, we always had a pet around the house, ok.. several pets. My mom was a sucker for a stray animal and the animals in the neighborhood knew it. I’m sure the news got around by word of mouth “Hey, Fido, there’s this woman down the street who cooks pretty good and she will feed you. Just sit in the front yard and look sad. Oh yeah, be sure to suck in your gut.”

This brings me to my new widdle goggie (That’s baby talk for “Little Doggie” because for some reason, we lose the ability to speak like adults when we get around the little darlins.) I was laying on the couch watching TV one evening when I spied a beautiful Cattle Dog walking around in the cemetery across the street. I did my best to ignore her because stray animals tend to roam around there quite often and they usually go home and I never see them again. This dog did not go home. She was there every evening for a week and a half. I became concerned about her because the street I live on has become increasingly busy over the years and I kept hearing horns honking and more than a few screeching tires.

I tried to approach her but much like the women I have been attracted to, she ran away lickity split, albeit with much less screaming, crying and pepper spray. I took out the big guns and got some leftover pork roast out of the fridge. She was hooked. She was still very skittish but it didn’t take her long to fall heads and tails in love with me – as women also would if they would simply desist with those bothersome restraining orders (just kidding).

I did not want a dog so I searched for ads in the paper and online to see if anyone was looking for her and I took her to Petsmart to see if she was micro chipped but to no avail. I also tried to even give her away on Craigslist but there were no takers. Over the next few days I  noticed that she had not had one “accident” in the house and she was able to learn commands very quickly. She stole my heart with her antics of dragging out everything in the kitchen trash can and unexpectedly jumping on me with all fours while I was laying on the couch. I eventually named her “Baby, the orphan dog”. ~sighs~ I was all hers.

My great niece, Kaley, who is 16 and growing up way too fast, wanted to make her some doggie treats as she did for her yellow lab, Dakota. Baby, loved them so I wanted to share the recipe with all of you “doggie wuvers” out in Southern Plate land.

The ingredients and recipe are very simple, which is what I like. We are making treats out of Peanut Butter and oatmeal which are very yummy to the tummy! Yes they are! Yes they are! Such a good doggie… umm.. excuse me. I get caught up very easily.

Here is all you need: peanut butter,  water, oatmeal, veggie oil, and whole wheat flour.

Put the peanut butter in a bowl.

Add your oil..

Now look at that measuring spoon. It didn’t melt in the dishwasher, it was made that way.

Knowing Christy’s fondness with kitchen utensils I thought that was pretty cool.

(Christy’s Note: Hey Bill, you know some women are fond of diamonds or horses and the like. I’d say my husband got off lucky)

Next, pour in the water.

Now isn’t that a good picture considering it was taken with a cell phone? I thought so.

Stir, stir, stir.

Kaley is doing such a good job at this. She’s a good girl, yes she is! Yes sh… oh.. sorry. I’ll stop now.

Add your whole wheat flour.

Yes, whole wheat flour. Gotta keep our four legged friends healthy too, especially when they tend to eat stuff that.. well.. nevermind.

Add in that oatmeal!

Taking a little break to admire that backsplash. It’s hand painted. Isn’t it awesome? Ok, back to the recipe.

Now Christy says your best kitchen tools are your hands.. or is that Emeril Lagasse that says that? You know they look so much alike I get them mixed up sometimes.

Anyway.. smush it up real good.

Flour your counter.. or in this case the wax paper on the counter.

Kaley taped the wax paper down so it wouldn’t slide. put a little flour on your rolling pin and go to town. I mean get started rolling it out. You don’t need to go to town in the middle of this. Roll the dough out to 1/4 inch.

Look at the cute little doggie shaped cookie cutters. One is in the shape of a bone and the other is of a dog in a sitting position. The precious factor is off the charts.

The dog doesn’t care about cute but we pretend they do cause we wuv dem soooo much! Yes we does! Yes we… dang it… sorry.

If you don’t have cute cutters, just cut them into squares and they’ll be just fine.

Look how cute they are. Your doggie will love you so much for these it will make up for every failed relationship you’ve ever had, at least that’s what I’m telling myself. :)

Doggie Biscuits

  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1- 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 tbsp veggie oil
  • 2-1/4 cups whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl combine peanut butter, oil,and 1 cup water. Gradually add flour, then oatmeal. Add 1/2 cup water.Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut out with cookie cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 35 minutes.

This is Bill Gent’s “Baby”. :D

Me and My Zoe

We adopted Zoe from the Human Society several months ago. She was absolutely meant to be part of our family. She and I are two peas in a pod. My husband and the kids call her “Mama’s Shadow”.

Stat isn’t an acronym; it’s an abbreviated form of the latin word “statim” which means immediately. (And they said latin classes would never come in handy…)

  2. How absolutely simple and easy! I love it! Bill, you and your great niece did a fabulous job! I’ve got all the ingredients handy and I’m going to make some for my boys today. They followed our old dog home from walkies one night and worked their way into our hearts .. <3

  3. Tricia (aslmom)

Thank you so much Bill for posting this! We help with DFW Pug Rescue-my foster pugs are our chihuahua are going to love me for this. All dogs that enter my house eat organic dog food. I wanted to give them a treat, but the healthy ones at the store are so expensive! I will have to make these soon. =)

    • Oh cool Tricia. The Foster dogs will not want to leave!

    • Anita

Tricia, if you have a food dehydrator, try drying sweet potato slices for your dogs. If you don’t have one, you can dry sweet potato slices in a 200 degree oven. They’re healthy and natural. Dogs love them.

      • Anita

I forgot to tell everyone about my “fur kids”. I have a supposed Rottweiler/Lab mix named Dumas, who is smart as a whip. Friday is a German Shepherd rescue dog. He was found in Alabama last September and found his way into my heart. He is 95 pounds of lap dog. He loves to sit in my lap and watch his namesake Joe Friday on reruns of Dragnet.

I don’t buy treats for them, I buy people food for treats: baby carrots or frozen cut green beans. They’re healthy and inexpensive and my dogs think they are candy. They just loooove dried sweet potatoes, too.

      • Tricia (aslmom)

        Thank you Anita!

Now that my peanut butter chocolate chip cookies for my fellas are out of the oven on this first-day-back-to-school-and-I-hardly-know-what-to-do-with-myself, it seems like a perfect time to make cookie bones for my six best buddies…Woodrow (he’s a Bassett Hound), Boomer (old man Boxer), Tai (Pekingese), Frasier (Alpha Dog Papillon) and, of course, Cosmo and Phoebe (Papillon Puppy Pandemonium…brother and sister resetting all my freak out and giggle buttons alike with their shenanigans!) All rescues….what WOULD we do without their loyalty, love and lightness of heart? I don’t know, and I don’t wanna know, either.
Thanks for the inspiration for all of our family members to eat so well, Christy!!!

    • Traci, for sure. We had not had a dog for 20 years because my moms pekingese got out and ran directly into the street (which she had never , ever done before) a week after my mom died. It was too tough on my dad to lose both if them so close together.

He’s enjoying Baby although I’d be lying if I didn’t want to give her away after she found a can of car polish stored under my work desk, got it open and poured it all over my carpet, walked through it and then jumped on my bed earlier today. lol

We have the most precious, adorable, precocious, spoiled rotten cocker spaniel named Daisy that has ever existed. I’d wanted her forever, but she came into our lives when we needed her most and has filled a void that I thought could never be filled. She really needs these doggie treats. Thanks, Bill and Katie and Christy!

  6. Miniwalela

Bill thanks for the dog biscuit recipe. Will have to make them for my 3 mini schnauzers. It has cooled off a little here in Alabama and don’t mind doing a little baking. It’s nice to give them something homemade.

  7. Tammy

Thanks so much for posting a recipe for doggie biscuits with easy to find ingredients!
Since I never pass up an opportunity to talk about my babies, here goes! I have six Chihuahuas. Daisy, my oldest (10yo) is THE QUEEN. Max (2 1/2) was my first boy and he’s the clown of the bunch. A year after I got Max, I was lucky enough to get his brothers, Bruiser and Weanie (I didn’t pick out the names). Weanie is a mama’s boy and Bruiser is a superhero. He let me know that the hot water heater was about to catch on fire just in time. Then came Chloe Diva, a stray, aka Wild Child. And last, for now, is Harley. She was at a local shelter for over a year. I love my Baby Chi’s!

  8. Mary M

Thank you for this wonderful recipe! When I give gifts at holidays to friends I like to take their “babies” some treats too. How cute these will look in a cello bag with ribbons! My sweet Tess will love these! A gift made with love!!!!!!!!

    • Mary,

Petsmart had some great dog paw print ribbons to tie animals gifts with. Started to get some but I figured I’d better pay the electric bill first.. heh..

  9. Betty Jordan

Oh My!!! So glad to see a doggie recipe!!! I’ve made treats before, but not with peanut butter. Bill, you need to work on creating some variations – cheese, or garlic,, or dried beef. Maybe even some carob poweder. I have the “ideas” just not the talent to figure out the measurements!!!!
Anyway – THANK YOU and Christy TOO~!

    • Betty J,
My niece also made some with cheese and we were gonna do both kinds but it would have made way too many for our dogs to eat anytime soon. There’s lots of recipes out there, just google “Dog biscuits” or “Dog treats” and you will get a ton of them.

When someone in the Medical world says STAT …that mean right now…..immediately. Sespi is right on.
Christy , I have to tell you this. Yesterday I was shucking corn to make some of your fried corn. My little 3 year old grandnephew was here and he said.”Auntie Betty , how are you going to get all that hair off the corn?” So I let him help me get the silks off the corn. I thought it was so cute.
We have to watch Bill, he loves the women . I saw him on Marilee’s post the other day. I guess we all love Bill. *wink*

  11. Hello Bill! Your post is fantastic! Thank you for guest posting for Christy! It’s always a joy and honor to read your words! You had me smiling and laughing! The doggie treats look wonderful! I will make some for my Miss Lilly, our two-year-old Sheltie. She’s the only other girl in my house, so she and I pretty much stick close together! The receipe looks simple (which is great for me) and delicious (which is great for Miss Lilly)! Thanks again Bill and “Hello Christy!” Hugs to you both!

  12. Peggy

Awesome recipe and I’m sure my babies will love it. Both Kalie and Sassy are adopted formerly abused strays that crawled right into our hearts and their forever homes. No matter what the spoiled babies as they are lovingly referred to have plenty of love and beds to sleep on every day. I go back and forth on cooking their food also so love the idea of home made treats.

  13. Su

My dog, Queeny, was a German Shepherd cross with Collie. She had a Lassie face but short hair all over. She was so scared of water. We got her prior to her turning one and I think she may have had bad experiences with water with her first owner. We would have to tie her to the tree just to wash her and if she saw you just even pick up the water hose she would run! I was only 5 when we got her and at that time she was so big and I was so small I would ride on her like a horse! Sadly we had to put her down a few years ago but she lived a long life that even the vet was impressed that day we took her to him. She lived to be about 16 years old. She was there right from the time before I was even in school and saw me through my teen years into the first years of my twenties. I haven’t had any other dog since. She wasn’t too well trained and could only manage to sit after being told more than a few times but she was a good dog.

  14. Bev

I can’t wait to try these for my Dixie. She is a spoiled little chi/poodle mix that I adopted from the shelter 6 years ago. She is such wonderful company and you can’t get such unconditional love as you do from your sweet dogs.
Thanks Bill for this post. You did a great job!

  15. Emily

My boys and I can make these for our Stella. She’s my daughter b/c I didn’t have a human one. I finally convinced my husband to get a standard poodle. She’s honestly his girl and has been the best dog ever! She will love these treats and I can’t wait for us to spoil her with them. Thanks Bill and Christy! Hello Mother if you’re reading this post! :)

  16. Kolene

Our miniture Schnauzer, Fritz was the love of our lives! He went to either my husband or me and didn’t favor one over the other. He ruled this house for sure! I always said, “he let us live with him”. I made him these treats too. My recipe was about the same, and easy to make.
We had him for 14 -1/2 years and he left for the “Rainbow Bridge” last year. He is greatly missed and still loved! To anyone who has lost a pet, look up (on the internet) the poem “Rainbow Bridge” to read. It is beautiful!

    • Kolene,

Rainbow Bridge is a very nice poem for us dog lovers. I recently ran across it when I was trying to find a home for Baby before the little booger wormed her way into my heart.

  17. Carolyn

Christy, thanks to you and Bill for the great – and simple (which I always appreciate) recipe! Now I am not kidding when I tell you that you and Bill BOTH need to get into some sort of comic sideline, because you both have me rolling on the floor with laughter after your posts!

    • Carolyn,

I liked it because it was simple too. Haha!, “Jordan and Gentry” sounds good. I’d have to give her top billings cause Christy is all Diva-ish and stuff, LOL!

  18. Forget the backsplash (altho it is pretty Bill) I want that stove!! ;) Homemade doggie treats are the best. Don’t have to worry about what’s in them. I currently have 3 cats and 1 dog – every one a rescue or stray. My lab recently passed – she was a shelter dog too and made it to about age 13. Sure miss her. :’(

A quick google search said that STAT is derived from the Latin word “statim” which means immediately. Not that this southern gal knows much Latin.

    • Mary,

Heh, I want that stove too. If my Niece ever goes out of town she may come back and find it missing lol. I know losing your lab was tough on you. So glad she found you in the first place.

  19. mary

Kolene, I have that poem framed and sitting next to the last picture taken of our “late, great” Dude. He was a beautiful Golden Retriever and only 9 yrs old when he went to the rainbow bridge. We still have an 11 yr old Golden and an almost 2 yr old Golden whom i call “the wild thing”. Old Kodi just sleeps and Moose just gets into things. Their pictures are on my Facebook pic page. When the weather cools down, I’ll try these for the boys. I wonder if the 2 cats might grab a couple, hmmm.
Thanks Bill and guys for the recipe.

  20. Brandy

Okay, I always laugh at Bill, but when I got to the part about the cookie cutters precious factor being off the charts…well, I just laughed so much I probably woke the kids up from their naps. Thanks for the recipe Bill.

Christy, I have a dog IDENTICAL to your dog and her name is Zoe also. She is the sweetest dog in the world along with out weimeraner named Otto. The only difference in our Zoes is that mine is showing a lot of gray. She’s 8 (almost 9) and Otto is too.

  21. Phaedra

I loved this post. It was so fun and helpful. I think my two babies will like the new treats. Thanks for sharing!

  22. Liz

We don’t have a four legged baby at the moment but my 2 year old adopts any and all dogs she sees as her own. Considering she’s usually covered in peanut butter and other yummies they tend not to mind. I’m going to make these for our friends who also have a 2 year old who likes to eat real dog biscuits and two dogs that I bet feel kinda sad when he eats all of their treats and our wonderful neighbors who let us borrow their pups when we need a doggie fix. Thanks Bill, your Baby looks precious. And Christy, I love Zoe’s name ;)

  23. mary

Hi Bill, the dogs eat the cats food any chance they get — so i have to keep the cats’ food on the counter. If the dogs don’t scarf up their food really fast, the cats help themselves–share and share alike, I guess!
    P.S. loved your post!

  24. Dianne

    Hi Bill .
I love your humor and your recipe! I bake cookies weekly as an extra fund raiser for my daughters animal rescue sanctuary “Hearts Herd.com”. If you would like to see cookies go to the facebook link “ta da” but enjoy a small tour and some stories at the other links. This recipe will be added for our precious little friends Thank you.

  25. Della Barker

Thank you for sharing your doggie treat recipe! I’m sure our shih tzus, Star and Maggie May, will enjoy them! They are our babies, are spoiled rotten, and love treats! I really enjoyed your post, Bill!

  26. Debbie V.

Hi Bill~~Thanks for the simple and healthy treat for our babies.
I do have to say I can’t believe that YOU would have any problems of concerns finding and keeping a woman. My goodness, you like to cook AND are witty to boot. Come up to Michigan, us northern girls will take care of you real good!!!!
Thanks again for this great post.

  27. Shannon

Stat comes from medical word statim and means immediately. Thanks and keep the recipes coming!

  28. Mama Jane

We can’t have dogs where I live….sigh. I have to content myself with visits to my grand-dogs. Since it was only 107 degrees yesterday i reckon yall could have just set those dog biscuits outside for a while. Aubrey said the thermal imaging thingy on her deck surface showed 157 degrees. Dante just thought he knew about hot!

  29. Jamie

Bill – Baby is beautiful! Australian Cattle Dogs are known to be extremely smart. I’m going to have to make these for Jack, our doberman/beagle mix rescue. Thanks for the easy receipe!

  30. Leah

My 7 year old son, Stephen, and I made these biscuits today. It was a fun baking project for him to literally dig his hands into. Marleigh, our lab/border collie mix, loved these treats. At first she dropped it to the ground, sniffed, and then decided to give it a try. She gobbled it up and immediately started begging (barking) for more! It appears we’ll be baking more of these in the near future. Thanks for the great doggie recipe!

  31. April

Thank you Bill for the great post! I’m going to pass it onto my wonderful neighbor, she has 3 boston terriers, Sammy, Maggie & Buddy and one yellow lab, Little Girl. They are such awesome dogs and glad to have them as my neighbors as well. Our LilBit passed away 6 yrs ago, she was a miniature dachshund we had her from the time she was 6 weeks old until 7 yrs old. She was the love of my life, I had lost a baby and my hubby got her for me to help fill that void in my life at the time. We haven’t had the pleasure of owning another dog, maybe someday I know there are so many rescues out there that need ones. We do have a kitty though we rescued a few weeks ago, his name is Mokie and he’s 13 weeks old.

  32. I came home to a 4 month golden retriever today, so I really need this recipe!

THANK YOU! this will be a great recipe for mom and kiddo to make together!

    love baby!

  33. Would plain white flour or self rising white flour work as well I want to do this for my babies now but dont
want to run to store first

    • Judy,

I don’t know why it wouldn’t. Just google, “dog biscuits” and see if there are any with white flour. Although I’m sure its ok, this recipe makes like 35 or more so its a lot to throw away if your dog doesn’t like them.. still, its cheap to make so go ahead and try and lemme know.

  34. Cathy

Hey there! Love this post! I have two mini dachshunds, Schatzi is 17 years old, and Winston is almost 6 years (he’s our Grand-dog!) we sort of inherited him when our son went off to medical school four years ago…btw, Christy, my sister has a Zoe too, that looks just like yours!..she’s part black lab, part Newfoundland. Can’t wait to make these treats. Thank you Bill!

  35. Thanks a bunch Bill for this great recipe. We have a Chihuahua names Sassy and you can bet your bottom dollar she is “sassy”. She is also a very picky eater and I usually make her food. She loves veggies better than meat. And her favorite thing of all is peanut butter, so I know she will love these biscuits. You were very thoughtful to remember our pets who are surely “angels unaware”. God bless you dear man!

    • Debbie,

God Bless you and keep you! Sounds like he’s already blessed you greatly with sassy though. We must be thankful for his gifts.. an “attitude of gratitude” is always the best way to handle life.

  36. elaineraye

Loved the post Bill and I may just pamper my little man of the house and make him some treats. He is a Maltese and his name is Charlie for every day but his registered name is Sir Charles Joseph of Lasayette. He just turned seven this month and he is definitely my baby.

  37. Beth Sherrill

Bill, can’t wait to share this with my work buddy. My 4 legged kids will love these. Molly came to us as a pound puppy shortly after we lost out two golden retrievers she was litterally a pound puppy, less than two months old. We adopted her and Max her equally young cage partner. Unfortunately Max had Parvo which we didn’t find out about until he had been home for 24 hours. Everything the emergency vet and our regular vet tried to do failed to save him, but luckily Molly didn’t catch it, which was a bit of a miracle. Six months later we decided that even though Max broke our hearts, Molly still needed a pal. Dakota was at a rescue, he had been abandoned, adopted and then turned over to the rescue when he was too rambunctious. Both are Heinze 47 mutts, Dakota is part black lab, and part cattle dog and ? Molly is also supposed to be part cattle dog, but she looks more like a little husky! Then came Cassie, My 18 year olds boyfriend “gifted” her with a “purebred” black lab. She was in a cage outside a pharmacy being sold by the “breeder”, so as far as I am concerned she was rescued too. She is two now, rambunctious and beautiful. All the babies will love the goodies and Hawk my friends huge mixed golden whose rescue story she will have to tell, will probably need them cut an inch thick !Thanks so much! Enjoy your pups, they bring the love of the maker of the universe to us!

  38. deebeefromnc

Hi Bill! Thanks for the doggie recipe and your humorous delivery. I am going to save this to make as a Christmas gift for a friend’s dog. I don’t have any doggie-cute cutters, but plan on using my CAT ones, instead. I’m sure she’ll find these treats so ‘dog-gone’ good, she’ll never NOTICE what I used to cut them out with. LOL Congradulations on the newest addition to your family! She’s a lucky lady to have you for her Papa :)

    • Deebee,

Thank you! Heh, I’ll have to get Baby some cat cookie cutters.. so maybe she will leave the real cats alone. I think she just wants to play with them but I’m not taking any chances lol.

  39. Kelli O.

Hi there! Our local bakery makes dog treats along with people treats. Their round doggie treats are called “Snickerpoodles” and their man shaped treats are called “Mailman” Too cute!!! Maybe you have a little business you could start??!! Mail order homemade dog treats!!! :) I can’t wait to make these for my babies. BearCub a black German Shepherd and Bella a rescue little bit of this, little bit of that mutt. Thanks!!!

  40. Sarah C.

What a fun and easy recipe ! I made my little angels dog treats one valentines day. That recipe was full of liver and it stunk up my house worse than anything I had ever smelled! My husband and I tried to have a romantic dinner that night but the overwhelming smell of liver quelled any romantic feelings we might have had….it was awful! I cant wait to try these. My 16 year old lab went to doggie heaven to wait for me this week last year. But we
Still have our border collie, Penny, who is ”
A great friend but a bad dog!” and we
Sweet little mutt, Pepper, who loves every moment of life and wags were tail in her sleep. We call her “feffer” (pepper in French) so she will feel fancy and exotic even though she is a mutt. We don’t want her feeling inferior to all the pure breeds!

  41. Karen

Aussie Cattle Dog a/k/a “Blue Heeler” – - awesome dogs. We adopted from the humane society at age 3 months when our children were 11, 10, 8 and 7 years old. She lived for 17 years and helped us raise them all. She was so smart, so loving, and so loyal. Definitely a “velcro dog” meaning she was my shadow and “herded” me through the house (smiles). I still miss her – with a cattle dog, just look in their eyes – it’s all in the eyes.

    • Karen,

I’m just a beginner with Cattle dogs but I’m being “learned” real quick! Baby is a velcro dog for sure. Gotta shoo her out of the way a LOT especially when I’m trying to cook in the kitchen. One thing I can say.. she’s the best alarm clock I’ve ever had.

  42. Brenda Bean

Thank you very much Bill and Christy. I made some up last night for my girls …. three puggies (Blossem, Chloe, and Daisy). I have to admit my daughter who is 25 and married grew up with quite a lot of brother and sisters. and my grandson has three aunts right now… i think he gets confused but he always knows “the girls”. actually the biscuits weren’t that bad i ate one just to make sure. Bill you would catch a good woman if you gave her pork too… maybe it is just that you run after the wrong women. haha… my three girls were purchased… but daisy came from a bad home i paid 200 dollars for her because she was abused and tortured by her previous owners 4 boys… and even still carries a bb in her head from being shot… she has been with me for 2 years now and is as gentle and loving as anyone… but is still skiddish of boys… getting used to my grandson though… she allows him to lay on her for a few minutes before finding the back of my chair to hide… but she never ever gets upset about it… so thank you bill so very much for the recipe… i will be making these … btw i had a can of left over frosting and spread on mine but it was good…

  43. Trudy G

Thanks for the great recipe! If it involves peanut butter my dogs will eat it! This will be great to mak and cut in small bits to put in my dogs’ kongs when we got out.

Not a whole lot of large dogs listed here so I just had to tell you about mine – Our current oldest at 3 years is Samson a half Ridgeback/half Mastiff 165 pound big baby. The other two we have are a 1 1/2 year old brother and sister that are German Wire/ Black & Tan Coonhound cross. We got the sister as a pup from the local shelter. 8 months later the brother ended up back at the shelter so we adopted him as well. They make my life very interesting and entertaining!

  44. Holly C

I’m sorta new to this blog…I’ve been reading and following for several months but I’ve never posted a comment until now…so HEY YA’LL! : ) <3 this blog!!!
My husband and I have a Chihuahua/Beagle mix that we rescued from the local Friends for Animals shelter a little over 3 years ago. Tatum is my baby and my bodyguard. No one can come near me without his permission. We also have a 1 year old cat named Colby. They are the best of friends! Also, my parents just got a 10 wk old Lhasa-Poo last week and my sister has 2 basset hounds, a yorkie and 4 red tick coon hounds, so with all those doggies in my family I'm thinking these treats might make me the best mommy/sister/aunt in the world! : ) Wonder what I can give Colby so he won't feel left out?
Thanks for the recipe Bill and Christy, thanks for the site…it's great…I can't wait to get a copy of your cookbook!

    • Holly,

Hmmm.. on the cat treats.. They are carnivores so any treat made with meat will work. They love “smelly” so liver would be good. MAybe we need to come up with one made of tuna..

Thanks for the wonderful simple recipe.. most are very complicated and have ingredients I have never heard of…. Right now I only have 6 dogs, although my daughter lives behind me and she has 4.. so I think that makes a yard full…. they eat better than we do most of the time….

And Bill theres not enough dogs in the USA to make up for all my bad relationships… and if you can fix a riding lawn mower.. I will marry you on the spot.. mine seems to hate me right now, and my neighbor is not happy about having to fix it and be neigborly although I offered to make him a pie. haha..

    • Joann,

lol, I can usually figure out a motor thats broke as long as there is no computer on it.. might take me awhile though lol. As far as the relationships, I hear ya. I feel so sorry for Tiger Woods wife. As David Letterman said, “Whats a beautiful woman with 500 million bucks gonna do to find a man?” lol.

  46. Most wonderful recipe…. I’m eager to try it for our new “guy”… Bucky the rescue Border Collie… he’s an “old guy” 8 years old, and not likely to have been adopted – but he’s our forever dog and we’re spoiling him the best we can… these will help! Thanks, Bill!!

Christy, Bill and all of SouthernPlate folks: I’ve had my adopted dog, Ram since 7/2002. He was adopted from the animal shelter. He is truly a joy to be around. He has been limping for the past 2 months. We thought he sprained his leg in the back yard running. Well yesterday I took him to the vet and he has Osteosarcoma of the right front leg. I’m devistated. I don’t know how I will be able to function without him. He is my joy, besides my kids.

Please all remember me and him in your prayers. We are only doing comfort measures due to $ and if you do amputation, it will still metastasize and spread to the lungs, without a miracle from God. I cannot say how much I will miss him. I have cried for the past 29 hours. Please all remember us!

    • Sherrie,

I will remember Ram in my prayers and you too. I remember reading the Reverend Billy Grahams newspaper column many years ago.

A lady told him that her beloved dog had recently passed away and she asked Dr Graham if he thought her dog would be in heaven. He replied “Whatever it takes for God to make us happy in heaven, we will have” He told her that he believed her precious dog would be there waiting on her.”

I hope Ram can pull through but if that is not the case my dear sister. Ram will be there in Heaven when you get there. He won’t have a worry in the world and he will be healthy and whole.

Bless you for making a difference in HIS life and giving him love like no one else could. The Lord be with you and comfort you.

      Love, Bill

I have a Catahoula Leopard mix dog. She is an awesome pet. I love her. I buy tons of dog treats. I guess I should make her some home made treats. We love to go to the dog park and hang out with our two and four legged friends. Thanks for the recipe. I would like to show pictures, but I don’t know how.

Thanks for the recipe, Bill. I plan to adapt it a little for our little Ninja, a 6 yr. old Pekingese that we rescued from a puppy mill 3 years ago. He has skin issues so I will be subbing olive oil for the veggie oil (omega 3s) and whole-grain rice flour for the wheat (.75 cup rice flour=1 cup wheat flour)

He dearly loves peanut butter, so I’m sure he’ll enjoy these.

Bill and Christy, y’all are good people. Who else would bake for their dogs. We have a shih tzu, a half shih tzu and a yellow lab and I know they are going to love these!
