Orange Juice Special

My family loves smoothies. Our reigning favorite is still the Bananarita Breakfast Smoothie, but this one holds a close second. The hubster says it tastes like one of the old Orange Julius but  I think it tastes more like a Dreamsicle to me. Concentrated orange juice is the secret to that burst of flavor while the milk and vanilla make it nice and creamy. Although Ricky and I disagreed on what it tastes like most, we both agree that it is worth repeating whenever we get a chance!

I’m working on getting my tour dates ready to announce as well as several other big announcements. Since we’re in the home stretch leading up to the book release, I’ll be doing an update post about once a week to let you know something new and exciting that is going on for the Southern Plate Family. I can’t wait to “give” you all of the surprises we have in store over the next few weeks, including some REALLY big ones! ~squeal~

In the meantime, while I work on the back end of things, get in there and make your family a smoothie :) . Love you all. Gratefully, Christy

You’ll need: Frozen orange juice concentrate (still frozen), milk, vanilla, and sugar. I am using Ideal Sweetener* in place of the sugar. You can use real sugar or your favorite substitute.

*Ideal is a natural sugar substitute that can be baked with just like sugar. I’ve fallen in love. Lots of local grocery stores carry it but none of the ones near me. You can order it off of Amazon.com though. I dearly dearly love it in my iced tea.

Place your frozen orange juice concentrate in a blender.

Pour in your milk.

Add your vanilla

And your sugar or sugar substitute.

Note: there is still a lot of natural sugar in that orange juice but this does cut matters somewhat.

BLEND!

(I just felt like yelling that)

Serve in a glass over ice if you like. This makes about four.

Orange Juice Special

  • 1 Cup of frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 1 Cup Milk (I used whole)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla (give or take, I eyeball it)
  • 1/2 Cup sugar (more to taste if you like)

Place all ingredients in blender and mix until frothy. Pour over ice to serve. Makes about four.

    Hey Christy

Tell Ricky his taster buds are a little off – definitely tastes like a Dreamsicle…lol. my Mom used to make these for us with ice cream and a splash of milk. TGIFriday’s makes theirs with a splash of vodka — but you can drink more of them if you leave out the vodka.

Thanks so much and I sure hope you are coming to St. Louis on your tour – lots of fans in the midwest!! :-)

  2. Joy

    MMMMM sounds good to me

and I agree I think it would taste like a dreamsicle

  3. Su

I never would have thought to blend orange juice. My go-to smoothie is banana, natural yoghurt and some honey blitzed with milk.

Looking forward to hearing more about the book. How much of the book will include new recipes that you have not posted on SP? And does your tour include a pit stop this side of the world? ;)

    • Hey Su! There are a lot of new recipes in the book which I plan on keeping exclusive (not posting here) as well as new stories (tons of those) and such, too!

I really really need to do an Australian book tour, doncha think?

  4. I made a dreamsicle float the other night with orange crush, cream soda and vanilla ice cream. Was pretty good. This sounds a bit better for me lol.

Ok.. Gotta go..I got a dog to kill since it just ate the electric cord off my vintage Coca Cola clock.

Can’t wait to try this. Looks really yummy and my girls would love it.

  6. elaineraye

How refreshing. I think frozen pineapple concentrate would be great two or maybe even a combination. recipes are only limited by your imagination.

  7. elaineraye

Still thinking of th epineapple/orange and maybe a splash of coconut milk. I feel like I am in the Bahamas!

Sounds good Christy! Can’t wait for your book to come out. I live in Athens and there are two place on the square that would be wonderful to sell your book, Pablos on Market and Crawford’s. Will they just be available on-line only? Thanks!

    • hey!
So far we know the book will be available at all major booksellers (Barnes and Noble, Books A million, etc) as well as Sam’s Club, many Wal Marts, and more!
It’s exciting ! I’m going to be at the Southern Independent Booksellers Association conference later this month in Florida and I saw Pablo’s is supposed to be there. It’s up to the indie bookstores if they are going to carry it so please do ask!
A great many of them are already taking pre orders and plan on having them in store as well.
      Gratefully,
      Christy

That’s great! I will have to make a special trip in there and request it! I have to tell you, my boss got me hooked on your web site! He is retiring in January and I think your book will be a perfect retirement gift! Thanks for all you do!!

Thanks for posting this it looks yummy! I use xylitol (which is one of the sweeteners in Ideal) all the time because I am diabetic and have yet to find a recipe it doesnt work in. I have even made fudge with it! I order mine online too from Emerald Forest Xyltiol (http://emeraldforestxylitol.com/). They are the cheapest I have found and you can order it in larger bags (10-100lbs)!

I have started making something similar on the weekends for when we work outside in the heat! The only difference is that I’m using a pineapple-orange juice (it was BOGO free at Publix recently) and I add a handful of ice cubes to the blender to really make it thick and cold.

  11. Christy,
Being a diabetic,I really appriciate your tips on the sugar substitutes.
I won’t be havin’orange juice concentrat for breakfast but the kiddies might love it.

  12. Emily

My mom used to make us something similar for breakfast, but she’d add an egg for the protein. I might have to try that using pasteurized egg whites (from the carton) to balance the sugar from the juice & milk.

  13. Tina

Whether it’s like the old Orange Julius or a Dreamsicle is alright with me!!! Yum!!
Christy, I look forward to your tour schedule announcement! Hoping you are headed North! Would love to see you on your tour! I’m planning a trip South so that might just work out too!

    Bountiful Blessings!

  14. maryann

I wonder how it would be if after you mixed it altogether, then put in an ice-cream maker?

  15. Leah

My mother used to make a similar breakfast drink for us in the blender when we were growing up. She always called it “Orange Whip”. It had the same ingredients with the addition of ice to make it very cold and frosty. Yum! If I wasn’t on a low-carb diet then I would go “Whip” me up one right now! Oh wait, I think I can tweak this recipe to fit into my diet. (Splenda, heavy whipping cream, Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange Drink Mix, vanilla, and ice.) I’m also planning on altering the Bananarita Smoothie. I used Splenda when I tried it the first time and LOVED it, but the banana is still a no-no because it’s very high in carbs. I’m thinking I might replace it with banana flavoring instead. It may not taste near as good or have the same consistency as the original, but it’s at least worth a try. Thanks for taking me back to one of my childhood favorites.

  16. Grandma T.

This sounds Sooooo good and I have four young grandchildren that I’m sure will really love it. Going to give it a try tomorrow, will make a great after school snack.
Thank you so much for your wonderful ideas and just for being you. Very best wishes to you and your whole family. I know the book will be a BIG success. I also hope you will make it to St. Louis, we would love to see you in person and you really have to dine at some of our Italian places on the Hill.

Bless you all and Many thanks again,
    Grandma T. and Family

  17. My parents used to make something like this when I was growing up. We always just called it orange julius. I loved it! I’ll have to get some OJ concentrate and whip some up.

I actually have a kinda funny story about this drink. Way back when my parents were first married, and had to be extreme tightwads, they were making orange julius. They were using a wooden spoon to scrape down the sides, and ended up accidentally catching the spoon in the blender blade, spreading slivers of wooden spoon all over in the drink. Not wanting to waste food, they valiantly tried to fish out as many slivers as they could and drink what was left. After trying to enjoy the extra-fiber version of orange julius, they realized it was a lost cause and had to throw it out. Moral of the story, don’t use a wooden spoon to scrape the sides of a blender, especially while the blender is running!

  18. Hi, I’m working with Ideal Sweetener. Thanks so much for the wonderful mention of our Ideal No Calorie Sweetener. We’re glad you like it! Visit http://bit.ly/atgBD1 for $1 off your next purchase.

  19. Mary Yannotti

hay love it I used to take cool ade and milk ice cream and make for my kids the grape thay called the purple cow gota go get my ornge cream going
    thanks God Bless all

  20. MY kids used to love a version of this when they were growing up and I often threw in an egg for protein – cuz we raised chickens and sold eggs so we always had a good supply. It is sooooo good!! Especially on Sunday mornings when we were trying to get ready for Sunday School in a hurry – it was kind of like a bribe…………

On another subject – is anyone having trouble finding canned pumpkin? I tried at a local grocery chain the other day and was told they haven’t been able to get it in over a year!! I did find some in Rochester, MN at HyVee over the weekend. I needed some for pic at our Drive Inn restaurant. Surprised me!!

  21. yet another winner Christy!!

  22. Rhonda S

Oh yea, I make these all the time and my family loves them….the only difference for me is I add ice in the blender and mix it all up….YUMMY

  23. Miss Penny

These are soooo good….and for a bit of a delicious change, use Almond Milk instead of regular whole milk. It is right there in the milk aisle, near the Silkmilk and Half N Half. ..is really made from almonds, low in calories, but downright tastey…and ya can cook with it too (as in cookies, brownies and muffins) Oh yum.

I LOVE seeing all the stuff you do with store brands (Great Value, especially).
I found Ideal sweetener at Big Lots here in Baton Rouge and I am HOOKED! I like it better than Truvia, Splenda, Equal….any of the rest!

  26. This looks really yummy! Could a food processor be substituted for a blender? I don’t have a blender.

  27. Sharon Taylor

As an Okie now living in England (long story, but at least its SOUTHERN England ya’ll)….I found quite a few things that I can’t get here….Frozen oj is one of them. I’m wondering if a person could use freeze Tang and use that? ( I order that from an American online grocery store.) Love your recipies Christy…

  28. Marion

Sounds very good-I am going to try it with yogurt in place of milk!

  29. Rhonda Oswalt

Add one cup of water to your recipe and you’ve got an Orange Julius. The recipe is all over the internet. I make it all the time.

  30. Cindy Archer

I use 1/4 cup powder sugar when I make this. I just recently got a Margaritaville machine and I now make this in that. Perfect texture.

  31. Kathryn

My mom would make this for me when I was young. I still make it. Yum!
