Apple Doozie (Dessert Pizza)
Y’all know I tend to be just a teensy bit on the talkative side, right? Well I got to talking so much down in this post that I felt obliged to keep the intro short and sweet so as not to wear your eyes out, so I’ll just tell you about this pizza.
This is a recipe I whipped up because I LOVE the apple dessert pizzas that all of the pizza chains have. I got to thinking that it would have to be a quick and easy recipe for them to make them on such a large scale. After taking a few minutes to wrap my head around it and dream up the ingredients, I went shopping and made this little baby. Bingo. Bull’s Eye. JackPot. We just passed “GO” AND Collected $200!
My only suggestion is that you NOT make this in the evening after the kids have gone to bed because then it will be just you and your husband and this big old apple pizza…and if you eat a slice it will keep calling you back for more and I am not responsible if you and he eat nearly the whole thing. No sireee, coz we’d never do such a thing at our house! ~looks innocent~
You’re gonna need: a Pizza crust, apple pie filling, cinnamon, quick oats, flour, brown sugar, and margarine (you only need half a stick of margarine).
To make the glaze on top, you’ll also need Confectioner’s sugar, milk, and vanilla.
Most pizza crusts I buy come in two packs so this is a great time to mosey on over and make Taco Pizza, then serve this for dessert. Good eatin!
*If using fresh apples, see instructions at bottom of post.
First off, open that can of pie filling.
You’ll notice most of the apples are in slices in there so we want to dice them up a bit so they’ll spread better.
What I do is take a long bladed knife and stick it down in the center, then pull it to the side.
Repeat this over and over and you dice up the apples in the can with no mess.
Now take out one of those pizza crusts and put it on a baking sheet.
Spread the pie filling over the top of the crust.
In a small bowl, place brown sugar, cinnamon, flour, and oats.
Stir to combine.
Cut up 1/2 stick of margarine (or butter) and place in the bowl.
Using a long tined fork, cut that into the dry mixture until it looks like…
This is one of Katy Rose’s “golden forks” ~giggle~ Story about those is here…
this.
Okay so this is really well cut in. I never cut mine in this much because I don’t have the patience for it. I called in the hubster to do this part of the job because my hands were bothering me (I’m getting old here) and he is very umm…dedicated.
So you can cut the butter in until it looks like this or you can just cut it in until you get tired of fooling with it. Pizza will still be good. ~shrugs~ I’m easy to please.
Take that topping and sprinkle it all over your pie filling and crust.
This bowl I’m using is a Pyrex one in a pattern called “Gooseberry Pink”. The style of bowl is called “Cinderella”. Cinderella bowls had two handles on them , one slightly larger than the other, and they were raised on the sides so that the handles could be used as pouring spouts. If you scroll up and look at the top view photos of the bowl you’ll see what I mean.
Sprinkle that over the top real good.
This is me with jewelry! I say that with wonder because I am not one of those people who ever looks “put together” based on their own efforts. Anytime you see me accessorized and looking like I’m wearing a planned outfit, that means one of two things: 1. Someone else dressed me. 2. I saw an outfit put together in a catalog or a store window and happened to have enough in my closet at home to duplicate it.
I seriously have no fashion sense at all, its just not one of those things I’m good at. This outfit is one I wore in a photo shoot for a magazine you’ll see in December, so in other words, it was put together for me. Fortunately, its hanging in my closet so I can just copycat it anytime I want! lol There was a photo stylist who put together my outfits for all of the photos in my book, right down to the jewelry I wore – which is another thing, I don’t really have much decorative jewelry. I’ll buy one pair of cheap hoop earrings and wear them until I lose them, then I’ll go buy another pair.
I generally have two necklaces that I wear. One is a gold heart locket my parents gave me sixteen years ago and another is a little silver necklace I bought myself when I finished my book. It was custom made and features a little silver heart with the word “Grateful” stamped on it, for my grateful heart. It also has two tags with each of my kid’s names on one, and a tiny pearl. I cherish both of these necklaces so they outrank fashion jewelry any day. If you ever see me wearing a necklace and it’s not one of these – then you can safely bet that someone else put together my outfit for that day!
I’m seriously useless when it comes to fashion, and I’m okay with that. Give me a pair of blue jeans and a comfy cotton top, toss on some tennis shoes or loafers if I’m feelin’ fancy, and get on with the day! When it comes time to do anything public, folks come in to make sure I don’t embarrass all of y’all
.
I love people who are good at stuff like that and I just keep on letting them be good at it, in return I like to feed them
.
~back to our pyrex bowl.. ~
I had someone ask on the facebook page if there was anything in particular I was looking for in terms of Pyrex the other day. You know the first thing that came to mind wasn’t Pyrex, but it was from that era. ~sighs and hangs her head~ When we moved, I somehow managed to lose two of my milk glass vintage coffee mugs that I really enjoyed drinking out of. One was Davy Crockett, from the fifties, and one was a Strawberry Shortcake one from the eighties. I’ve looked for well over a year now so I reckon its time to put them on my list and start scouting antique places again. Surprisingly, I don’t shop for antiques where I live. There is a massive antique mall here but whenever I walk in the folks who work there look at me like I’ve just forced them to swallow a bug (I don’t think I’m special, I’ve seen them do that to just about everyone). So I have my best luck on Ebay and at the once a month flea market in Nashville – which I only manage to get to a few times a year at best.
Oh! We were talking about a recipe here at one point, weren’t we?
Pile in the back of the truck and I’ll drive us on back to the kitchen…
Here is our apple pizza all ready to bake
Place it in a 350 degree oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until lightly browned.
to make our glaze, place one cup of confectioner’s sugar in a bowl and..
Add about two tablespoons of milk.
You can add more if you need to but start with this, you’ll be surprised at how far it goes once you start stirring.
I am using a child’s medicine cup to measure this out. Often you’ll find them with tablespoon measurements printed on them and I just love these!
Stir that up good and add your vanilla
Stir again
Use your spoon to drizzle the icing over the top.
Im kind of a grid criss cross drizzlin’ kinda gal.
Makes sense t’me. Does it t’you?
(I couldn’t resist. If you are an Alabama resident who has been flipping channels in the past few months, you know what I’m talking about! Now giggle a bit. C’mon, it was funny! Admit it! hehehee If you wanna know what on earth I’m talking about, google “Tim James commercial”.
Note: this is not a political statement, we don’t talk politics at the Southern Plate Table! )
Let pizza cool for about five minutes or so before eating
(just enough so you don’t burn the tar out of your mouth when you take a bite)
Right about now you are looking at this and thinking “I wonder if that tastes as good as I think it is would?”.
Let me set your mind at ease and tell you that the answer is “No”. It taste even better! MAKE THIS NOW! AYYEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
(that was my Apple Doozie war cry)

This is like watching fireworks.. When you first see it, you say “ooooooh” when you taste it, you go “Ahhhhhh”…
What about a layer of sweetened cream cheese before you put the apples on? Wonder if that would work?
I make somethin’ real similar for my family and it does indeed have a layer of cream cheese mixed with brown sugar under the apple pie filling. Yum!!!
Hi Susan,
I would love to have the recipe for the cream cheese version. Sounds incredible.
CJ, I tell people all the time that I got overweight due to “shame eating”. It’s a shame there was some left over.
HAHA! I like that Novella.
LOVE THIS!!
Ohhh that sounds so yummy! Thanks Christy for another great post!
Thanks for this recipe Christy, looks so good! Also, just to let you know, there are a bunch of those old Fire King milk glass Davy Crockett mugs on ebay right now, brown and red graphics.
this looks wonderful- I made something like this with a sugar cookie base…it was awesome…I just love desserts! thanks Christy!!
have a happy day:-)!
My family’s not wild about the oat kind of toppings. Think I could make this without the oats or add something else instead?
Sure thing! Just leave it out or sub pecans. No worries!
I’ve been browsing for the past week or so (every since I added you on FB) and already I have a list as long as my arm of recipes to try! Thank you for sharing!
Oh my goodness! I saw your email post in my inbox, and my first thought was “Take the day off, Christy! It’s Labor Day!!” Of course I would’ve felt something was missing from my day had I not received your blog post, but really, take a break Miss Christy!! I’m hoping it is just an automated email, and you are just hanging out with your family, having a good ol’ time instead of making sure we have our daily dose of deliciousness from you
Enjoy your day!
Vanilla ice cream…
I agree with Brittney – take the day off woman!
Although I have to admit I spent yesterday trying out new recipes on the family and they were so good I couldn’t quit complimenting myself! I especially love this site with good ole fashioned recipes I thought were long lost to me. For that, Ms. Christy, I am eternally grateful. Now go have a barbecue!
Thanks for sharing! Can’t wait to try it!
I am thinking that a good drizzling of caramel sauce would be excellent in there too…yeah, and crushed nuts…..wow, I am soooo hungry thinking about that….
Oh,CHRISTY!! The ONLY thing I can think of to make your site any better is if you’d give us a list of ingredients for upcoming posts ahead of time so we could jump up from our computers and get straight to some cookin’ and bakin’!!! BTW, I was laughing too hard to get ‘on the truck’, but I eventually made it back to the recipe!!! LOTS of LAUGHING!!!!! Born and raised in the North, but LOVE how Southern folks express themselves. Glad God transplanted me and am grateful to be a family member of Southern Plate!

MANY THANKS FOR SO MANY GOOD RECEIPES
My oldest daughter will just love this! I will have to make it for her for a surprise ;o)
CORRECTED E-MAIL ADDRESS
Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU!!!!!!!! My baskets arrived a couple of days ago. They are beeeeeautiful!! I got one for myself and one for my newly married DD. She will get hers on December 1st as an early Christmas present, along with a print out of your Southern Plate Christmas Favorites. (We rarely make it til Christmas with every present!) I’m gonna save the cookbook, already ordered, for Christmas.
This really looks wonderful! My mom (I’m her caregiver) has been wanting something different to eat and I have everything to make this. I’m gonna make two small ones as I’ll keep mine on the as-healthy-as-I-can-make-it side.
And let me just say that your Pecan Pie Muffins were the biggest hit with my mom. She doesn’t eat much at all and the first time I made them she ate two of them in one sittin’. She loved them! It’s been an often requested treat!! I have a feeling this one will be too!
amy
I am all ready thinking of cherry pie filling or blueberry filling! I love the idea of the cream cheese layer as well. And for the apple pizza, how about a little grated cheddar cheese mixed in with the topping? My Mom used to make an apple pie with cheese crumb topping and it was Heaven in a pie plate.
See…it’s recipes like this that make me mad I’m diabetic!
However, I might be able to do a substitution or two, and still make it taste as good as yours does.
As a fellow milk glass junkie, check out RoundTop over in Texas come October if you can. Miles and miles of nothing but junk and antiques. Words of wisdom: 1. Don’t fly. If you do, you’ll end up buying stuff you can’t get in overhead bins or stuff that’ll break if you let the luggage handlers touch it. 2. If you MUST fly, take along an extra suitcase with NOTHING in it but bubble wrap.
Thanks for a great website! I’m so glad I found you and Southern Plate (and so is my husband/kids/family)!
I’m one of those people that loves cheddar cheese on apple pie (don’t knock it if you ain’t tried it!), so I think I’m going to try sprinking some grated cheddar on top before baking. Yummmm…
How about PBJ sandwiches (has to be grape jelly for some reason) with pepperjack cheese on it? Sounds gross but it’s GOOD!!
Yummy!!! Looks as delicious as it sounds!!! I’m lazy enough that this might actually be something I could do! hehe
And please, Christy, don’t feel bad about going off on tangents. Many of us out here in SP Land have minds that often wander without….oh look, a squirrel!!!
Thanks again for a wonderful post!! Look forward to the next as always!
Michael
Sounds wonderful. My nephew and his wife just had a beautiful baby boy. My nephew loves apple pie!!! Looks like he will be getting one in celebration of his new baby boy!!
I love the way you share with us! I noticed the mention of the magazine article!!! When will we hear more?!!!
I also love your necklaces. I am like you, I wear one pair of earrings until I lose or break them. The necklace with the names of your angels is beautiful!!
Blessings to you,
Pam
a drizzle of lovely caramel sauce on top too…..!
Christy, I drool over your recipes, but drool even more over your Pyrex bowls. I’m a minor collector after getting my mother’s. She got all kinds of Pyrex as wedding gifts in 1959 and I started from there. I have a 3 piece set of mixing bowls identical to the one you used in this recipe. Now I know it’s called Gooseberry Pink. My set has a large and small pink bowl with a white design and the middle bowl is white with a pink design. I’m now working on collecting different colors and styles of Pyrex. I find a lot of it at flea markets around here. I’d love to see what other Pyrex pieces you have, but in the meantime, I’ll just have to use mine trying out your recipes. BTW, I’ve been looking for a banana bread recipe I used to make as a child. I believe it was called Banana Tea Bread and the recipe was in a little booklet put out by Spry (?) Shortening. All I can remember was it seemed to have very little flour, perhaps 1/2 cup.
anita, i have the set of gooseberry pink also. my oldest dd bought it for me for 20.00 at a flea market, (east texas) they are in perfect condition. i use the tar out of them, plus they remind me of a happy day with my daughter. i have a casserole dish that’s milk glass with gold designs painted on it, it came with a wood trivet and a clear glass lid. i think it is pyrex but have no idea of the design name. it’s called the “praline sweet taters” casserole dish since that’s what it holds every thanksgiving!
Isn’t Pyrex just wonderful, Mama Jane? Thanks for sharing.
Oh, what a great idea. I have my own canned apple pie filling overflowing in the pantry thanks to a vounty crop from the apple tree. This is a perfect way to use some of it up.
Lookin’ good Christy as does the pizza yummmmmmmmmmy. Which Tim James commercial? There’s a gazillion that came up.
Christy, you have made my nephew the happiest kid on earth. I’m gonna wind up cookin’ that twice a week until doomsday!
Anita: Maybe you can find that Tea Bread recipe over here: http://recipecurio.com/category/booklets/home-baking/ This is a scanned old Spry Shortening booklet, and there’s LOTS of old vintage recipes on that site. I found my mom’s old chess pie recipe over there.
Have fun!
Thank you so much. I’ll take a look – Anita
Oh , my goodness…..I just gained five lbs reading this but that won’t keep me from making it. It sounds so wonderful.
Hope you had a good Labor Day Weekend. I labored all weekend and today taking care of my little patients. I like it when all the BIG DOGS are gone and it is just me and the staff. Love you Dahling.
P.S. If you feed me , I will dress you. I love fashion even if I am getting old.
Clothes are my downfall but I am getting better at not buying anything as I don’t have any more room in my closets and I am trying to be economical. I just can’t afford it anymore but I have more clothes than a person has any right to have. LOL
It is in the oven, and ohhhhhhhh it smells so wonderful!! I’m going to add a scoup of vanilla ice cream to top if off! We made the mexican pizza first-yummy! A nice easy meal to end this labor day!!
Oh, Christy, that apple pizza looks so good! I made one similar to it before several years ago, need to do it again because we love the apple pizza at restaurants too. My only problem is that it seems like whenever I buy apple pie filling, a lot of the apple slices have that hard part in the center of the apple attached to them. Do not like. I guess I could go through all the slices and cut it off though! Also I love your jewelry. I think jewelry is pretty but I don’t wear much of it, and my approach to fashion is exactly the same as yours. I have 2 necklaces that I love also- one of them is actually kind of similar to the grateful one you have, my mom gave it to me the night before my wedding. The other is a necklace that matches my engagement ring that my husband gave me the night he proposed. He played a trick on me and gave me a tiny velvet box that I thought was an engagement ring… it was the necklace! Then later that night he actually proposed. I was completely not expecting to be proposed to so you could have knocked me over with a feather both times! Okay one last thing: this morning I poured bacon grease in a jar for the first time in my life. It’s in the fridge. Thought you’d be proud.
I have this in the oven as I type and my kitchen smells wonderful! Thank you for sharing!
I have those bowls! both the large and small pink ones Hmmmm I wonder where hubby put them. I will be making this tomorrow as I still have some homemade apple pie ice cream still left.
Thank you so much for this yummy pizza pie recipe
You always make everything look so easy!
Oh my! I don’t leave the pizza place unitl I’ve had a slice…or two…:)… of apple pizza. The last time we went I kept sending my husband to go check for the apple pizza…so, this recipe is after my own heart, ( and stomach.) Thanks for another wonderful recipe. I’ll be trying this one out as soon as the banana puddding from Daddy’s birthday party is gone.
Christy… check out Etsy.com. You don’t have to bid on anything. They have both your mugs you’re looking for! I checked for ya!! I’m addicted to their site and yours. You can search for things and eat apple pizza at the same time!
That looks delish! I’d like to try it for a potluck or cookout someday. I love those Cinderella bowls, too! I have four. Just bought a 4 qt Amish butterprint the weekend before last. Oh, and an Old Town sugar bowl with a lid that I’m using to hold cut up lemons! Like I needed them. Oh well, I could spend money on sillier things! There are a couple of antique malls that I like to go to when I get the time and they are pretty friendly so let me know if you are ever in Pensacola!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOooh Pensacola? I’ll have to remember that, Sonya and sure will holler at you if I’m ever that way!
I love Amish butterprint. Grandmama had a few of those when I was a little girl
Milk glass and all kinds of antique glass is usually easy to find on etsy.com, I am a serious window shopper there but haven’t bought from it yet. BTW, I have to eat 2 pieces of this type of pizza every time I go to CiCi’s. I am not sure it would be a good thing to make at home as I know I would eat it until it is gone!!!!
OMG. It looks so good. I also like that you chop your apples. In similar recipes I’ve seen them in slices. Makes it easier to eat chopped I think. Can’t wait to try it!
[...] Apple Doozie (Dessert Pizza) – from Southern Plate [...]
Trying it now with cherry pie filling and added pecans. Can’t wait. It smells soooo YUMMMMMYYYY Thank for the recipe.
Follow-up. This recipe is a keeper and is so easy to make!!! Everyone loved love it.. Thanks again.
I made it today also. Didn’t have dark brown sugar on hand so I used light. I think the dark makes a better presentation. Also, the crust I used said to bake for 10 minutes so using the 25 minute time made it slightly crunchy (but not burnt). Otherwise, it was really yummy as the flavors blended together nicely. I’m certain I’ll make this again.
I made this tonight also (that’s 3 of your recipes in 2 days!! LOL). Mine turned out a bit too sweet for me… Could it be because I used light brown sugar instead of dark? Is there much of a taste difference between the two? Or maybe I added too much (there were some clumps in my measuring cup!) LOL Either way, we all still enjoyed it very much – just in moderation! I’m thinking I’ll just have to measure more carefully next time or cut back on the sugar
Thanks for yet another “keeper”!
I made this over the weekend. I used three small pizza crust and topped them accordingly. That way I had plenty to share! I kept one for my family of 4, gave one to my parents, and one to my Grand Mother-Inlaw. Everyone agreed that it was awsome and commented on my wonderful cooking skills. Thanks for a wonderful recipe.
Making this TODAY!!!!! My family is SO excited!!!!
[...] Apple Doozie [...]
THIS LOOKS GOOOOOD! Gonna make it soon! Love you, Christy! And btw, you always look beautiful. Don’t change a thing. I’m a firm believer that clothes do not make the woman (or man)… it’s what’s in the eyes and in the heart that matters most!
Yum – looks wonderful. And I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who uses the medicine cups for measuring other things – among other things, I use them for the fat-free half & half and sugar-free vanilla syrup for my iced coffee (made with your cold brew technique, of course)!!!
I love the look so this dessert! I hope you don’t mind that I posted the photo of the pizza and a link to your web site. Having lived in the south many years ago, my heart (and tummy) still reside there!
Thanks for your wonderful site!
Hey Cat! I’m honored! Thank you so much and welcome to family!!! You’re a grand addition!
Gratefully
Christy
I made this last week and it was delicious! Thanks for another great recipe.
