Love your recipe for candied apples. I'm sure you know that you can also make a great dish of sweet potatoes the same way. Well, not with the cinnamon candies but with butter and white sugar or brown if you prefer. My Mother always made her potatoes that way. They were wonderful. So many people think you have to add water, but not so. Love all your talkings, etc.

I have a question about the above recipe...When I was growing up my grandma would serve at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners Apple Rings...would this be the same type of recipe? I could always peel the apple, core out the center and then slice the apple to make rings...then cook it according the recipe above, right? Do you know what I'm talking about ? I haven't had these since I was in my 20's ( I'm well past that now with grandchildren of my own now). Would dearly love to make some...is there a way you could possibly can these for later use? Any ideas? Thanks, I love the recipes on your site...

You know what makes this so great is that it's so doggone easy! Ohh, and yummy doesn't even touch it. I actually like this better than 'on the stick', because i like what the butter does to it. But, you know, I kept thinking why can't there be a pie that's got this flavor and I could just see that sugar turning into a hard block. And it came to me! I put some of those graham cracker crumbs you get in a bag, the ones I pass by for the ready-made crust, in the bottom of a deep saucer, plopped a good spoonful of vanilla ice cream on it and then spooned some of these hot apples on it. OHH MY! The best of both worlds. The sugar that hits the ice cream slightly hardens and the ice cream melts a bit like it does on a hot apple pie, and then you get that taste of 'crust' when you get to the crumbs. Betty Crocker used to be my 'go to' lady for something good to eat. Now, I open your emails 1st thing each day! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your emails, blogs and especially the way you are REAL.

How great to see this recipe. I can tell you how to make a thicker sauce. I've been making candied apples every Thanksgiving since I've been married (and that's been decades and decades). My southern husband and children love them, as does everyone else! The darker red you want the apples, the more candies you use. I didn't use butter though so I have to try that. I always peel and core the apples and then slice them thin as I can for more flavor. I mix the water and candies and low boil them on the stove, then add the apples. When the apples are done, you can remove them and keep low boiling the water and candies to make a thicker sauce. Then pour that sauce over the apples and serve them warm or put them in the fridge. They are wonderful and disappear quickly!

just wondering if you just made the butter and redhots could you just pour over fresh sliced apples so you would have the crunch of fresh? That is part of the thing I like about candy apples at the fall fair. Maybe will try a few.

Oh LORD!!! I so did that as a young bride and in the midst of entertaining guests my darling husband decided HE'D make brownies for the kids that came with their parents. Well, you know what happened. He opened that dang oven to put the brownies in and this blushing bride turned crimson. I quickly shooed him out of the kitchen and told him I'd finish the brownies if he would entertain. I was mortified.

Fast forward 42 years... if there are dishes in the oven its because HE didn't wash them. LOL Our deal isI cook; he cleans.

I can't wait to make these apples! Question: Have you ever pickled "Mock Apple Rings" using big cucumbers and Red Hots candies? Hmmm... I need to make some of those too! ((Hugs)) (Oh, I have the recipe if you need it.)
