Watch the Southern Plate Cooking Show

Thanks to my husband for recording the Southern Plate Tailgating Cooking Show this past week at UNA. We divided it up into segments lasting a few minutes long each so you can start and stop as you have time. I cannot tell you how much fun I had! This was the first time I’ve ever done anything like that. I’d never been on a stage with a mic and I was worried I might get nervous but let me tell you, I walked out onto that stage with my Southern Plate family in the audience and I was instantly at home. I could do that every night and be happy!

Hope you enjoy it. I would love to hear back from you in the comments section!

Gratefully,

Christy

Introduction (Boy did they make me sound good!), Welcome, and Texas Caviar

With a few stories hither and yon, of course.

Potato Salad, Random stories, the pot I’m coveting but could never bring myself to buy…etc

If only family reunions gave door prizes..

Jordan Rolls, story about Southerners and hospitality from Papa Reed’s perspective :)

Southern Style Pulled Pork BBQ, My husband’s way of securing the slow cooker to prevent takeoff ~winks,

working out your aggressions through cooking, etc.

What I do with all this food I cook, Magic of camera angles, vinegar slaw. how you can get away with being lazy by calling it “rustic”,

my public service for gardeners, showing off with apple butter, etc.

History of SouthernPlate.com (how I ended up here), The tale of Grandmama and the lemon bars,

Reading a special passage from the book

Nestle Toll House Cookie Bars, Story of Margarine versus butter, Family Adventure Days, Why I like to cook at ten or eleven at night, Having fun with a member of the Southern Plate Family (who loves his wife!),

Talking about the Southern Living Article, Thrilling kids with popcorn,The Alphabet story, Family as the ultimate backup plan.

My fancy dishpan, Mary Poppins’ visit to my house, making caramel corn, wrapping up the show.

I had such a wonderful time doing this show, I hope you enjoy it. We had a break in between each segment where my dad and Brady went to the mic and gave away door prizes. Bradybug LOVED the microphone and took the opportunity to tell a few jokes and interact with the audience, that is why we’re all laughing a bit as we go back to the cooking each time.

Special thanks again to the HES students at UNA for all of their hard work. I’ve been asked a lot whether or not I will do more cooking shows like this and there is no way I could have pulled it off without the culinary students so y’all would have to get me a big old tour bus to take them all on the road!

    Hey Christy,
Hope you are having a good day. Again, I LOVED the UNA show. You are just a natural at this stuff. I have a question. Do you remember the man taking pictures at the book signing? Do you know if he was from UNA or the Florence paper or just who he was with? Since I was the first to get my booked signed he asked me my name and had taken some pictures getting it signed. Really would like to see those pics. He may have got others names too, but I figured it might show up in some kind of paper. Thanks and hope this month will not be too tireing for you. Maybe I’ll come see you in Huntsville!

    • Hey Angela! I know a reporter was there from the Times Daily and one from the UNA Alumni Association as well. I think the TImes Daily is doing an article this week on it and there will also be one in the Huntsville Times but that isn’t so much about the event. When I see the Times Daily one I’ll give you a holler!
Thank you SO MUCH For coming and making this so much fun for me!
      Gratefully,
      Christy

      Angela,

He was from the Times Daily in Florence. I think he was taking those pictures for the Shoals Woman magazine b/c he took my pic with my friends and got our names. It will be in the next issue of Shoals Woman Magazine!

  4. Wow, Christy! You took to the show like a natural. I can totally see you having your own cooking show. Way to go, girl! You have come so far and show no sign of stopping! Bravo!

  5. WOW! Those are awesome! I am really happy for you. You did a terrific job and Brady was a hoot and a half. He was stealing your spotlight but that just makes it better.

I’m really excited for you and the direction all this is going. WOOHOO!

    Hi Christy!

Thanks for using some of my photos on your page–I am truly honored. We went on a Southern Plate cooking frenzy this weekend and I made the vinegar slaw, Jordan rolls and barbecue pork and another girl made the potato salad and yet another made caramel corn for a tailgate at church.

Needless to say all the dishes were a HIT with our folks~~keep ‘em coming. We are faithful devotees of the Southern Plate kitchen! :)

So glad I told you about the lipstick on your teeth! :-)

  8. I watched them all & loved it! It was like I was there…but without tasting all the good eats you made. Guess that means I’ll have to make them in my own kitchen to try them. :)

  9. LaFern

What a great show! I wish I could have been there in person to see you. You looked right at home and not a bit nervous. This is just the beginning for you, Christy. I can only imagine that you will be the next great southern cook with a TV show of your own before it’s over. Here’s wishing you the best of luck with all you do in the future! Your sweet spirit and wonderful attitude of gratefulness is going to take you a long way.

I loved watching these videos. I felt like I was part of the audience….except I didn’t get the pleasure of tasting all the dishes or have the chance to win one of the doorprizes. :( Thanks to your hubby for recording so we could experience the show and all the people who made the show possible.
You are a natural in front of the camera and I think you need your own cooking show. Maybe you could be on “The Next Food Network Star”. Can’t wait to meet you at the book signing in Atlanta.

  11. Deanie

No time to look at this now but will offer it to myself as a reward when I get caught up on my housework! The write up sounds good and can’t wait to
see the whole thing! I would have loved to have been there to see it in person!
Thanks for sharing with us and your hubby is “the berries” for taping it for you!
    :)

Can’t wait to get my copy soon!

PS…I am a southern California native and my hubby is a TN native. He is in the military. He brought me all the way across the country to Alabama for the first 6 years of our marriage. I grew to love the south. the food, the people, the countryside. Just everything. I have loved your website so much (and so have my friends who I cook for using your recipes.) We are back in San Diego now but I have taken all that I loved about the south and tried to bring it here, in my home. And thanks to you and your website, I have easily been able to do that. Thanks, Christy!!

Christy, I hope no one from my work is reading this . . . . I watched your entire show at work today! I couldn’t stop watching. You are fascinating. I enjoy cooking SO much! I love to cook, I love to watch cooking, I love to eat cooking! I watch that cooking channel non-stop and have been to a couple of pretty impressive names’ cooking shows who have been on tour here. And I can honestly say – Kudos to you Christy for really cooking AND entertaining! I was so impressed. Makes me want to spend the day in the kitchen with you! I know we’d have such a good time cooking lots of good food, but more than that – laughing!

I can hardly wait to meet you in Jackson, MS!

Loved the story about your grandmama and the lemon bars. She would fit right in with our crazy bunch. So would you. I still say we’re long lost twin sisters separated by a couple of years and a couple thousand miles.

  28. Andrea Rutherford

Christy, thanks so much for posting the UNA video, it was almost like being there in the wings. Looks like you had more fun than the ones watching from the audience! I’m convinced more than ever you’re my “voice twin”, with that Tennesee Valley Girl twang (I’m a native too, displaced further south now).

May God continue to bless your journey with Southern Plate, it’s certainlybeen a blessing to us who read and follow along!

  29. sue walker

    Dear Christy
I have just watched your show and thought it was absolutely amazing.
I feel as though I was almost there in person.
Well done to everyone including Brady and Ricky.
I am really glad that Ricky filmed and then put the show on the website for people like myself who couldn’t attend.

  30. Tracy

Hey Christy, just found out my copy of your book is on it’s way and I should get it on Friday. I am so excited to see it. Thanks for all your great posts. I wish you much continued success. I loved the story in Southern Living. I wish you were coming to Montgomery,AL.

  31. Hi Christy! Soooo…when do you start your own cooking show?? You are such a natural! And thank you Ricky for putting this up for those of us who couldn’t attend. It was the next best thing to being there. We also appreciate the support you give Christy. You may think you’re just quietly working behind the scenes, but you are an imprtant part of Southern Plate, too!

  32. Brenda

    Christy,
Thanks so much for sharing this show. It was wonderful. You are such a delight and clearly a sincere person. You deserve your own show – I already am looking forward to your next cookbook.

  33. I am curious to find out what blog platform you have been using? I’m experiencing some small security issues with my latest blog and I’d like to find something more safe. Do you have any solutions?
