Snow Cream :)

There are countless recipes for snow cream out there and I honestly am pretty surprised that I have the ability to bring you even one! Living in Alabama, snow is not something we normally see (We’re usually lucky if we get a dusting a decade) but we woke up to a full ten inches this morning and folks started asking about snow cream on Facebook so here we go!

My recipe is simple because…well you have probably caught onto the fact that I’m not one to complicate things. Simple is good and why mess with a good thing, right?

Oh, usual disclaimers apply. If you live near a nuclear meltdown zone, you are probably better off eating plain old ice cream. If you raise dogs who have already tromped through your yard this morning, you are probably better off eating plain old ice cream as well. I put my dishpans out last night so I have a big old pile of fresh clean snow to begin with.

Okay, now lets get crackin!

You’ll need: a Dishpan of snow, a can of sweetened condensed milk, two kids.

*Don’t fret over the amount of the snow. Just eyeball it and you’ll be fine.

*If you only have one kid, that will work, too! If you have ten+ kids, you’re gonna need more snow…

Pour sweetened condensed milk over snow.

Stir well.

Really well.

I put the remaining snow cream on the back porch so we can go back for seconds later!

Ingredients

  • Dishpan of fresh, clean snow (or shaved ice)
  • 1 can Sweetened condensed milk
  • 1-10 kids

Instructions

  1. Combine snow and sweetened condensed milk.
  2. Stir well.
  3. Hand over to kids.
  4. Discourage snow cream fights because they are sticky to clean up.

    My kids love, love, LOVE snow ice cream! All last winter I used it as a reward after we finished shoveling off the skating pond. This year the ice is too slushy, so we’re eating “just fer”. We found out that Dad …ummm… strongly dislikes the stuff, so now we go for it with clear consciences while he’s at work. We just mix milk, sugar, and vanilla into bowls of snow. I hadn’t thought of sweetened condensed milk. On the other hand, we get a lot more snow than you, so maybe I better keep it cheap!

    Here in Nebraska, we have had 9 inches of snow since last night. My husband went out and got a pan of snow and put a few scoops in a cup and poured a can of pop over the snow to make a “slushie.” It tastes pretty good.

    My mama made it for me and my sisters when we were little. Although, living in our part of Texas, we don’t get tons of snow. We got just enough to make snow cream once in a while. Mama made ours with sugar, milk & a touch of vanilla. I made it for my kids the same way. I really like the idea of using condensed milk! So easy!! :) Thanks again, Christy, for keeping it simple!

    Ummm! Love snow cream. My mom made it back when we had more snow than we do now. I make mine with 2% milk, about 3-4 cups, 1 tsp. vanilla and 1 cup of sugar. Mix and pour over snow. So good. Saw Liz Hurley use condensed milk tonight on the news, along with vanilla and sugar. I guess it’s all in what tastes good to us and how we learned from our moms. Guess I’ll stick to the old fashioned way, since I’ve been eating it for seventy years. Or at least when we have snow! I thought Pricilla B.’s hubby had a great idea. Slushy sounds good. Think I’ll try that with my Dr. Pepper. Thanks all.

  9. You can make sweetened condensed milk at home, in the microwave. However, you do need powdered milk to do it.

    Snow cream brings back tons of wonderful memories of growing up in Huntsville. Like Christy said, we didn’t get much snow but when we did, Mama always made snow cream. She made hers with milk, sugar and vanilla, too. I’m in eastern NC now and we get snow even less often (normally) than northeast Alabama, so it’s a real treat for us. The last few batches I’ve made have been with the condensed milk and a touch of vanilla. If you’ve never had snow cream, please give it a try!

  11. If I don’t have canned milk, I use whole milk, a little bit of vanilla and some sugar.

    Grew up in Mo and momma made snow ice cream all the time with Milk, Sugar, & Van; But we got other flavors too :) such as Choc. Lemon, Butter Rum, Peppermint, what ever flavoring/extract she had she would add to the milk mixture. Now the Choc. was coco powder. We never got the first snow always had to wait for the second because of the impurities in the air. We just ate it anyways when we were playin in it. :) Thanks for reminding me of special times.

    Hum, I just can’t relate. I live in an area that gets a ton of snow every year and I’ve never ever heard of such a thing. The idea kinda freaks me out.

    loved snow cream when I was a kid. Moma made it with milk, sugar, and vanilla She always made grilled cheese sandwiches and hot chocolate for us after we played in the snow, which was rare here in Florence, AL, Good Memories!

    Born and raised in the north snowcream was something we had all the time. Living here in the wonderful south we just don’t get the snow like we did when I was a kid growing up. This winter has proven to be a doozy so my little ones experienced their first batch of real heaven. They absolutely LOVED it. We have always used milk, sugar and vanilla in ours but I think next batch we will try condensed milk.. For those of you doubting how good this could be, try it!!   17. I’ve had snow cream once in my life and I have never forgotten it. My grandmother and I made it. I was very young but I remember it like it was yesterday. THAT’S what you are going for ladies and gents.. the memories made.. not just the treat itself.

    We called it Oldsmobile Ice Cream because that’s what we scraped the snow off of… her 1962 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Now go bundle up and make some memories for your kids.

    Boy does that bring back memories. We never got much snow in Memphis either but when we got a good bunch my Dad made the best snow cream and we stood over the floor furnace while enjoying it!

    I too grew up eating and loving snow cream, made with canned cream (condensed milk), sugar and vanilla. Like somebody else said, we never used the ‘first’ snow, but we sure made a lot of memories with all the snows that followed. I still love it…..at 71.
    Don’t ya’ll be eatin none of that yellow snow though~!

    We certainly don’t get snow very often here in Texas but when I was about 6 or 7 years old, we had snow! The one time in my life that I had snow ice cream, my Mama made it with milk, sugar and a little vanilla (I think). It was so wonderful – like magic! I will always treasure that memory. Thanks for reminding me.

    Oh my word! This is just toooooo funny, I was just reminising about Snow Cream this last week and telling my hubby about it. Poor thang, he never ever got to experience this special treat. We are now 59 years young. I so remember mom going out with the old beat up soup pan and scooping fresh fallen snow, adding sugar, vanilla and some milk and we kids were in hog heaven bliss. I grew up near Bellefontaine Ohio, so I was brought up right proper. lol Thanks for the great memories, Christy. Can’t wait to make these memories with our grandbabies now.

    My kids request it everytime we get any snow. It ends up being all part of family time and good memories. The kids pour and mix the ingrediants and then immediately dive in. LOL

    I am so thankful to have found this site! Besides the amazing recipes – what is so shocking to me is so many things that I thought were specific to my family were actually “southern” things! Snow cream was an invention of my Momma, or so I thought! We lived in central GA and snow was SUCH a rarity that snow creams were a super treat. We made ours with milk, sugar and vanilla, too.

    One more thing – I’ve always wished I paid more attention when my paternal grandmomma was cooking – she was the one that cooked like a Down South lady. Her veggies were always so simple but tasted better than anything! She’s long gone and her recipes with her, but this site has helped me find them again.

    Truly a blessing so many thanks!

    • Her name is Katy Rose and in the south the true test of whether you’re loved is if someone says your name enough to shorten it ;)
      Maybe they looked ahead and named the syrup after her ;)

    Born and raised in Georgia, whenever we were lucky enough to get snow, we made this with milk , sugar and vanilla. Then I made it with my kids and still do if we get snow. For those of you doubting if it’s good, give it a try and I think you’ll be hooked !!

If we are lucky enough here in Huntsville to get snow in the eggnog season,try that together and when we know a snow is comming,and we always do,I set my snow bowl out to catch clean snow and keep a mix of evaporated milk,it holds up to the snow melt,sugar,what seems like alot but won’t be,and vanilla in the fridge and when the mood hits it’s ready.
