Mama’s Strawberry Cobbler
Yesterday Mama called me and asked if I had put her Strawberry Cobbler recipe on Southern Plate yet. My immediate response was “No, but I reckon that means you need to take pictures and write up a post for me!”. She had this in my inbox before she went to bed last night.
Anyone who has read my book or knows anything at all about me, knows all about my Mama. She is who I have always wanted to be when I grow up. I know you will enjoy getting to spend some time with her today.

Hi Everybody! It’s Mama! I do not have any grandkids at my house today and was getting really bored. So I decided to cook something. That’s what I have always done when I got bored. I have been known to sit down and just look at cookbooks to find something that sounds good enough to cook. Next to quilting magazines, cookbooks are my favorite thing to read. (Bet you can guess which one is my favorite!)
Well, so much for my favorite hobbies, now on to the cooking.
I remembered that I have some strawberries already cut up with sugar in the refrigerator. Did your grandmother called it a Frigadaire like mine? It was the brand name of her refrigerator. I don’t know if she called it that because it was the brand or if she wanted everyone to know that she had an electric “icebox”. Back then having an electric icebox was a real status symbol. When she died, she still had that original Frigadaire. My aunt moved into her house and used the same one for as long as I can remember. Don’t you wish they still made them that well? So much for straying from the topic. Let me get back to it and tell you why I decided to make this cobbler.
These strawberries were sitting in the refrigerator and since they cost so much I hated to let them waste. So, I decided to make a strawberry cobbler. You may not have heard of a strawberry cobbler but let me assure you, it is delicious. I first tasted one at a cafeteria when the kids were young and fell in love with it.
I love strawberries anyway you fix them. So this was a recipe that I set out to duplicate the minute I got my hands on some strawberries. You can make this recipe with fresh strawberries washed and cut up with a little sugar on them or you can use frozen sliced sweetened strawberries. (Try to say that really fast!) If you use fresh ones, let them sit for a little bit after you add the sugar to make some juice. If you use frozen ones, let them thaw. If you are in a real hurry you can stick frozen ones in the microwave for a few seconds at a time until they are thawed. As you can see, I have been known to crave a strawberry cobbler and run out to the grocery store, buy frozen strawberries and then hurry them along in the microwave.
This is a really forgiving recipe. If you have a little extra fruit, add it. If you are a little bit short, use what you have and don’t give it a second thought. It will turn out just fine. Remember your grandmothers never had a measuring cup. They just “eyeballed” all the ingredients. This a recipe from the old days and turns out just fine. Don’t stress over it, just be glad you have a modern stove and not a wood burning one. I couldn’t promise good results with that kind of oven.
This strawberry cobbler is delicious by itself, with ice cream, or with whipped topping. My daddy adds a little bit of sweet milk*over his. Just serve it however suits your fancy. You will be the star! Let me know how your family likes it. See you soon and remember Mama Loves You!
Christy’s note: “Sweet Milk” is our common way of referring to whole milk. Back in the old days you had sweet milk and buttermilk. If you want to know why they called whole milk “sweet” just drink a big old glass of buttermilk and the mystery will be solved. ~winks~
To make this cobbler you’ll need: Self Rising flour*, Sugar, Milk, Sweetened Strawberries, Margarine or butter, and Cinnamon.

Preheat oven to 400. Place your margarine in an oven proof bowl and put in the oven while it preheats in order to melt it.
In a separate bowl, mix together all dry ingredients.
Add milk to dry ingredients and stir until smooth.
Like this.
Now you have your batter.
Now remove your dish from the oven once your margarine or butter has melted
(Christy’s note: Please note my Mama used margarine, too. I come by my cheapness honest! ~giggle~)
Pour in your batter. Do not stir.
Pour your strawberries over the top of that.
Do not stir.
Sprinkle about a tablespoon or so of sugar over the batter before you place it in the oven.
Bake at 400 for 30-40 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Serve on it’s own, with whipped cream, ice cream, or pour a little sweet milk over it!

Ingredients
- 1 cup self rising flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup milk
- ½ t. cinnamon, optional
- 2 cups sweetened strawberries (fresh or frozen)
- 1 stick margarine
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Melt stick of margarine or butter in a 2 to 2.5 quart oven proof casserole dish while you mix up the batter.
- Mix all dry ingredients together. Stir in milk until smooth. Pour over melted margarine.
- Pour batter over margarine. Do not stir!
- Pour strawberries into center of batter. Do not stir!
- Note: This is a little something that I do extra. You can do it or not. I always sprinkle about a tablespoon of sugar over the batter and strawberries before I put it in the over. It just makes it look like my grandmothers cobbler because that was her finishing touch.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until you can insert a knife into the center and peep into the cobbler. The batter should be cakey and not soupy. How is that for technical terms?

It went against my nature to not stir. I didn’t though and it turned out perfect!!! So good and easy!!!! I used frozen strawberries and cooked it about 10 minutes longer. Thanks for a great recipe!!!! Nowi have to find a Blackberry Pie recipe!!

My youngest recently went through your cookbook (it stays on the kitchen counter with the one holding all my hand written family recipes) to mark the ones she wants to make. Just made it again but this time with nectarine, peach, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and plums…. so incredibly delicious!!!!

Did you get those fruit from the freezer or mixed fruits frozen? I am crazy about peach cobbler, maybe I should try that.
If we stir it, does it mess up? I am going to try this. Strawberries are still inexpensive, the fresh kind. Sounds good.
I love this cobbler, I have made it two times now and my family loves it. The first time i did it with peaches and this time i did it with strawberrys and bannaes and it was osum. We like this it is ezea to mack.

I have been trying to make a good cobbler and have been coming up short. And today I bought a couple quarters of strawberries for 99 cents so this recipe looks awesome. It’s in the oven now. I am sure this will be a crowd pleaser!!!

This is wonderful! I had never had strawberry cobbler before, but it is great.
I made one yesterday and took it to my daughters office, so she could take home for her husband. She and I had a piece, she just went crazy over it. said “I could just eat that whole pan full.” I said will I hope you have some left to take home to your husband.
I made another for me, just took it out of the oven, waiting for it to cool some.

My mama told me to make this cobbler with peaches. Probably because we had so many peaches. I love strawberries but never thought of using them. Thanks for the great idea. Can’t wait to try it. What would we ever do without our mama’s to teach us these easy and delicious recipes!!!
This is wonderful! I love strawberries and my daughter Kaydence and I go pick them every year at least 2-3 times. I used 3 cups of strawberries and doubles everything else to make it enough for 8 to 10 people in a 13×9 dish and love it also. Family will be over tomorrow. Keep posting more recipes. I love southern cooking but I love to make different things also. Ready to eat dinner and toss some vanilla ice cream on top! YUM YUM! I will freeze my strawberries so I can make this in a few months when its not strawberry season. But until then I’ll have to invite some friends over while its still strawberry season!
My mama called this “poor man’s pie,” and always made it with canned peaches. I usually make it with blueberries until my freezer stock runs out… which is where I am tonight. The strawberry version is in the oven right now made with splenda and xylitol! I can’t wait to have some for dessert tomorrow. (Ok, so there may be a small taste test before bedtime tonight…shhh)

I made this for the first time today and for sure I’ll make it again, it was wonderful. Have lots of strawberrys in freezer to use until next season. Next I’ll use blueberries and peaches that will be in season using this this receipt.

I made this tonight but had to modify as I’m vegan. Used whole wheat flour (plus 1-1/4 t baking powder & 1/4 t salt), organic sugar, unsweetened plain almond milk and Earth Balance buttery stick margarine. I followed the instructions exactly and it turned out perfect! Thanks for an easy summery dessert!

Hi, just googled to find a good recipe for strawberry cobbler. Yours caught my eye, and I am baking it now. It looks so yummy I couldn’t resist it. Thanks, and I will let you know how our family likes it. : )
I used your recipe and did “my own thing.” For the batter, I added brown sugar, cinnamon, and quick oats. I cooked strawberries down (about 2 1/2 cups) and added sugar and then flour and milk (3 tablespoons of each). It helped to thicken up the water around the strawberries, making them extra gooey to go into the margerine. I also added a tad bit of maple syrup to that. Then I put them into the margerine and put my “wet sand” batter over that. I baked in the oven and stuck to your instructions for that.
I served the strawberry cobbler to my mom and my brother. They were really pleased and my mom demanded to know what I did. Thank you so much for the inspiring idea! I love to bake, and this is just enhances the whole experience for me. It is now one of my favorites!

I also have a “Mama” who is a wonderful, from scratch, eyeballing cook! She usually made this with peaches, but we love it with blackberries as well. She always called this a “Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa Cobbler”, because of the 1 cup flour, milk & sugar!
Omgosh! Forgotten how good this is!!!! My best friend and I used to make this with peaches when our girls were little…(in their late 20s now)….I could eat the whole thing by myself..
My mouth is watering now. I love this recipe. I’ve been making this for a few years. I started with peaches which is delicious, and then I wondered if the strawberries wouldn’t work too so just went for it and it was wonderful too. I love strawberrey anything. I’m like your mamma Christy, I’m either looking at recipes or quilt books. That’s my 2 favorite pass times. And I love the dishpan cookies. Thinking I’m making them tomorrow. This sounds really good. I wonder if Splenda would work instead of sugar? I’m diabetic, but I do cheat once in awhile. Shame on me!! OH – I made your lemon bars out of your cookbook this afternoon and they are SO GOOD!! I’ll be making them again and again, I’m sure! I love every one of your recipes that I’ve tried so far!

I made this with peaches that I caned last summer and was soooooo good made you want to shout.. I used 1 1/2 qts of peaches. Thanks so much for this receipt.
Mama, I have made a similar recipe for many, many years. I got the original recipe from a cookbook called “Spices of the World Cookbook by McCormick.” I got it in 1969! It’s in bad shape now, it got wet during a fire we had and the pages have old mildew stains on them but can’t bring myself to throw it away! Anyway the recipe is called Peach Cobbler Supreme. Made it a lot when my kids were growing up but never thought to use strawberries in it, thanks for sharing this with us!
This is how I learned to make cobbler from my former sister-in-law a long time ago in South Carolina! I make it this way all of the time.

Hidy to “Mama” and thank you for sharing. My g’ma raised me and she used to make a “cobbler” that had layers of pastry in it on the same order as lasagna. I have searched the Internet over and have yet to find a recipe for what I remember. Lord, was it delicious. The pastry absorbed the fruit flavor and color (in the case of berries). Back in the dark ages of long ago and far away whipped cream was unheard of on the farm. Instead she would serve it with chilled evaporated milk poured over. Makes me weak to even think about it.

I probably more than doubled the strawberries and did not add all the strawberry juice that had collected but I could have. It was yummy! And love your stories, too. =)

Loved reading your blog! It brought great memories of sweet milk! My mom use to call it that, and would ask my friends when they came over to play, if they would like sweet milk to drink… they would always look puzzled.. and my parents also drank buttermilk

My husband has asked for strawberry cobbler like his grandmother used to make for the entire 12 years we have been together. I am a dinner cook, desserts have never been my thing. His grandmother raised him from almost birth and passed away before I ever had a chance to meet her or get her great recipes. Lol. I came across your recipe and my 12 year old daughter helped prepare it. All I can say is thank you very much!! Your cobbler is so similar to hers that he actually had tears in his eyes! What an easy recipe! Many thanks! I wanted to use up some strawberries in a dessert for my twins and this was perfect. We are a goats milk/butter household so the recipe works well. I also added a cut up banana which was perfect! Not sure how much butter is a stick so if someone could clarify that would be great as i think i added too much!
One stick of butter equals 1/2 a cup or 8 tablespoons. Not sure how you prefer your measurements but that should give you some idea.
Dear “Mama” – I have this very recipe in my recipe box that I got from my Mama some 50+ years ago! It was passed to our family from a neighbor in Belleville, IL.
We made it with any kind of canned fruit we had on hand – cherry was one of my favorites. But once, before payday, we had to use fruit cocktail – and that was delicious,too! Thank you for taking me back to my “good ‘ole days”.

This post sooo reminds me of my beloved grandmama (born in 1905). I remember a story she told me once of when she found herself in a restaurant ordering breakfast. She ordered a glass of sweet milk to go with her meal. The waitress asked her if she wanted sugar in it. My Grandmama was appalled that the waitress didn’t know what sweet milk was. This is the same recipe my Grandmother used. But since I never learned to cook it when she was living, I wonder if I could ask you what I did wrong to make it so soupy? I followed the recipe exactly, except I put more strawberries than it called for.

I had my very first strawberry cobbler on a mountain top bbq stop in Alabama.
I had never tasted anything so good. This recipe tops that! It is so remarkable how simplicity is turned into extraordinary. If you have never cooked anything before, rest assured, you can do this. This would also be a great recipe for young cooks. You can’t go wrong with this, go ahead, just give it a try & you will be a fan also

I love anything that starts with, “You take a stick of butter…” My 10 year old granddaughter made her first cobbler using blackberries and this recipe last weekend. She was so proud, and pawpaw was so happy!
Thanks Christy’s mama. I have a similar recipe called dump cobbler because like this one everything is just dumped in. I have made everything with it from apple to pumpkin using canned pie filling and they are always delicious. Even in all this snow now I want to run and get some strawberries!
