Why you should never ask an engineer how big your pantry is…

It was an innocent request, honest. I just wondered what the measurements of my pantry were. I had asked my husband a few times and he kept forgetting so before I headed off to bed I shot him a quick email because I knew he’d be working on his computer later and see it.

I woke up this morning to find this in my inbox…

I used to be married to one. They’re a whole different breed. Your husband’s take on it is hilarious. Thanks for sharing!

As the old saying goes, ‘be careful what you ask for’.

  4. Lydia

So do you know what the pantry measurements are now? I’m still looking for the summary! :o )

  5. lol, that’s funny. btw, last night Stephen told me he wants to be an engineer, does Ricky have any tips for a 14 year old….to keep him interested?

    Thanks again for sharing. LYB

  6. Thanks for the great early morning laugh! Men….He’s a sweetie for being so thorough and exact.

  7. Donna McKinney

    Oh, my!

  8. elizabeth

That’s funny. I love it and probably would have done the same thing if I had someone ask me. (Guilty, I’m an engineer.)

But tell him he’s missing a dimension – there’s no overall height shown.
(ok, it would have to be a reference dimension, but does he really expect you to do that math?)

Thanks for the Good Morning Giggle!!! Glad I didn’t have coffee in my mouth when I saw it :)

  11. Marian in Tupelo Mississippi

Too funny!! Hugs to Ricky for a good giggle !

  12. Debbie Strum

My Dad used to be a mechanical draftsman…looks to me like the floor dimentions are 42 1/2 in. by 62 inches with a height of 188 3/4 inches. Now keep in mind I didn’t sleep too great last night! ~snickers~ Why were you wanting the measurments anywho?!!! Thanks for the cookie recipe, by the way!!! Can hardly wait to try out some new cookie cutters I got on sale!

  13. Annew

This is not unusual to me-three of my kids are engineers. DH and I aren’t and we’re not sure where the genes came from LOL

  14. Anna

LOL! My hubby is an engineer too and this is the kind of thing he does too!

  15. Karen Partin

too funny, my husband is in structural engineering and he would have done the same thing

  16. Kathy Trader

That’s like asking Herman “What kind of gun was that?” You don’t do that with a former soldier!

  17. Jamie

So what are the measurements, lol?

  18. Del

Ask an engineer for the time of day, they will tell you how to build a watch. 8-). BTW, thanks for the drawing. I am going to use it to put new shelves in our pantry.

  19. Carol

sigh…I totally understand. I’ve been married to an engineer for 41 years.

  20. My late husband was an engineer. Trouble is… he trained me and I’m just as bad now. I draw EVERYTHING out before doing it. Made most of my own kitchen shelves and windowsills. He just has better software than me.

  21. LOL, my laugh for the day. My hubbys not an engineer, but he does woodworking and by the looks of this he could have been, so this is the reason I really hate for him to have to hang anything on the wall for me, it takes forever. Gotta love em !! good luck with the pantry, my advice, get out the measuring tape when he’s not home and measure away.

  22. Heather

I’m married to an engineer… if I show him that he won’t see the humor. He will just say “that’s how it’s supposed to be done!”

  23. Mandy

Those logical men…gotta love ‘em! :)

  24. Tammy

    LMBO!! LOVE it!!!

  25. Michael Lord

Personally I don’t see the problem!

  26. Laurie Stone

how romantic! i would email my dh in the other room but he dont know how to navigate ANYWHERE on the puter. He cant even get to google. without me. lol. takes all kinds to make the world go round. <3

  27. Rockporter

Such a funny post, Christy ges full pantry measurements and another gets the plans to build her pantry. My husband is not an engineer but he should have been also, anytime I ask him to build something he does the exact same thing, lol..and yes, it takes for—-ever.

  28. maryann

If I figured it out right (I can’t really get the numbers clear on my machine for some reason). Its 81.5 inches high x 62 inches depth x 42.25 inches wide or 6 foot 3.5 inches high x 5 foot 2 inches back x 3 feet 6.25 inches wide? Its been a long day at work.

  29. lol, that is such a husband answer… oh the geekdom of it all! :) My hubs is an IT, go ahead an ask him what a “port switch” is… lol he once explained it to me in full detail with a diagram drawn on a paper napkin just cause I wanted to know what we were lookin for in the store…

  30. Elaine Moore

The story and all the wonderful comments are PRICELESS!! I LOVE coming here!!!!!!!

  31. Judi in Madison

My husband is an enginnerd, too.. I have to tell him I just want a straight forward answer – don’t reinvent the wheel!!!

  32. Vickie

That is really really funny! I think for me a simple peice of paper with inches and feet on it would have done just fine! :-P

  33. My nerd is an engineer. Tonight he came home with a detailed layout of our tv/sound/internet system when I asked him what the set up would be! silly.

  34. Puppydogs

Oh thank you for the best laugh I had today

  35. Connie

Chuckle!! At least he made the dimensions in inches and not some other “foreign language” . This is too cute!

  36. sue walker

    I love these posts.

  37. Well. That clears everything up. Any more questions, Christy? :-)

  38. Lisa from Jersey

But he didn’t draw in the jar of bacon grease?? Where’s the bacon grease?? lol

  39. Sonya

My hubby and I have been having a Big Bang Theory marathon. This reminds me exactly of something one of those characters would do! And your response is exactly like next door neighbor Penny! You probably should have been more specific with your question! :-)

I have a friend who is married to an engineer. He likes to do home improvement projects, but they always wind up taking months or years because he has to have everything just perfect! I think I’m better off with my less handy husband! He can take apart a computer and put it back together, but plumbing and carpentry terrify him!

  40. Elizabeth

    Gotta love him!

  41. Well…my husband is NOT an engineer…he just thinks he’s one. Reminds me of a little banty rooster…’course I do like bantams. lol.

  42. LOL That is great… Gotta love it… Im getting ready to marry a carpenter… And well, while its way lower on the totem pole, I know better then to ask questions about size… But even more so, I know better then to try to do any kind of “work” around him… LOL Because he watches my EVERY move.. Do I dare tell you we are do a COMPLETE remodel of a house we inherited and were FORCED to gut completely… I do my parts while he is at work.. LOL and then I work when he is doing his parts!

  43. This is hilarious! I too am married to an engineer. I sent him to your site to see this. You should see the diagrams of our garden!! Great story!!

  44. Rita W.

This is just way too funny! My husband is a self-made handy man but requires perfection of himself AND anyone else who chooses to “help.” I’m right there with poster, Charlene,…and honey, it doesn’t get any better. After 19 years of marriage, he STILL expects me to paint just like him or it isn’t “done right.” LOL! This was such a funny post. Thanks, Christy!

  45. Denise Brown

That is hilarious!! Obviously, he loves his job! Have a great weekend, Christy!

  46. Melissa

Very technical. I’m glad you didn’t ask how big your house was!

  47. Michele

My husband is an engineer too and apparently hatched from the same egg as Ricky. :) I wanted new office furniture for the house and he emailed me a to scale drawing of one (very near) rectangular room. He then laid out the furniture to scale… it all looked very nice. Needless to say… the furniture fits and I love my new home office. Too bad we live so far away because our husbands would get along great. :)

  48. Jennifer Swoboda

Oh Christy….being that I know your husband from ‘CAD world’ this cracked me up. I’ve never laughed so hard in all my life. Please tell him this brought me great joy but I really hoped to see some FEA at the end. ha ha ha ha ha I’m married to one too so I completely understand.
