14 Favorite Soup and Stew Recipes


I returned from Houston last night just in time to sit down to supper with my family! It isn’t really fall there (yet!) but it sure is here in Bama, so I thought I’d share some of my favorite soup and stew recipes with you today.

BBQ Joint Stew (Commonly Called Brunswick Stew)

At the first sign of chill in the air, BBQ joints around here start cranking out this delicious stew. It helps them use up any leftover shredded pork and chicken that they may have. By mixing in their signature bbq sauce (my No. 5 signature bbq sauce recipe is in my cookbook in case you need one) and whatever vegetables they have on hand they can turn out a flavorful and filling stew unlike any other.

Includes lots of ideas to customize this classic and make it your own!

Chicken Tortilla Soup 

Full of flavor thanks to the Enchilada sauce, this soup is a cinch to throw together!

Christy’s Slow Cooker Chili

Any southerner worth their salt has a great chili recipe, preferably a signature one. This is mine :)

Ground Beef Stew (with a secret!) 

Here is a  fuss free, economical, and delicious beef stew to warm you from the inside out. I just love stew weather! To me, this tastes a lot like Cracker Barrel’s Vegetable Beef Stew, but with more goodies inside! 

Our Family’s Chicken Stew Recipe

This stuff is good, you really need to make it!

Simple Tomato Soup 

With a few ingredients and a few minutes, you can have an outstanding tomato soup. Can you say Grilled Cheese?

Shortcut Senate Bean Soup

Oh my goodness is this ever good. Warm, soothing, filling, and with shortcuts to save time!

Tina’s Corn Chowder

This corn chowder is a great meal for vegetarians. Simply substitute the chicken broth with vegetable broth and you’re off to the races!

Chicken Noodle Soup

This soup is the absolute favorite of my son and all of my nephews!


“Free Soup” – Dieter’s Best Friend! 

This recipe is one my mother and I have used for over twenty years, and we still love it. Many diets have “free” vegetables, which are basically vegetables that are allowed without restriction. What this soup does is combine those vegetables in with a richly flavored broth and serves them up as the perfect anytime dish to fight off the munchies, serve as a quick and easy lunch, or a filling side dish with your evening meal.


Tomato-less Rustic Beef Stew

I worked up this recipe especially for my Aunt Sue, who makes the worlds best pound cake but can’t eat tomatoes. How are those two related? Well, beyond me just putting them in a sentence together I reckon that’s about it, but you can get her pound cake recipe in my cookbook ~winks~.

    Just purchased your latest cookbook. I’m a bit of a cookbook addict. That said, normally I find 3-4 recipes. Your new cookbook has so many great recipes that most pages are dog earred. Everything we’ve tried is out of this world.

    Love the taco soup. One time I thought I had hamburger, but didn’t so I used chicken in it instead. It is also really good with chicken. Thanks for all the soup recipes.

    Christy, could you fix the Shortcut Senate Bean Soup recipe so that it could be saved in the Zip List?

    Got a pot of the Ground Beef Stew on now. The first time I made it, I used mixed vegetables instead of the carrots and green beans, cause that is what I had on hand. Didn’t have the spicy V-8, but added hot sauce to my regular V8. It’s a keeper recipe for sure.

    I love your hamburger stew recipe I made it for my family when it snowed last week and we did not have any left it was wonderful. I can’t wait to try the chicken stew it sounds so good also.

    I’ve just recently come across your recipes and I’ve pinned most of them to make in the future. I’ve made the Not Your Average Sloppy Joe’s, the Last Minute Green Beans, the Chicken Patties and just last night made the Taco Soup. OMG! I’m so impressed by all of these!!! Thank you, Christy, for sharing such delicious and easy recipes. I especially love that only a few ingredients are needed and most are what I already have on hand or can use the leftovers from another dish. I also love how affordable your recipes are to make. I’m very frugal and I’m always looking for ways to save money and you’ve shown me I can do that while still putting delicious meals on the table. Let me just say, I’ve made taco soup before using another recipe and yours is SOOOO much better!!!

    I’m sooo glad I found your website ! I grew up on a farm in south Georgia, so I know southern cooking. I’m looking forward to trying a lot of your recipes. In fact I was looking for a chicken soup recipe when I stumbled across your website and found your chicken stew recipe. I will be making it tomorrow! I will definitely let you know how it turns out.

    Absolutely LOVE the BBQ Joint stew. Making a pot overnite in the crockpot…have tried Hamburger Stew, Chicken Stew, Taco soup, …I LOVE them all. I am a soup eater, and being single, I get to have a variety of soups in the freezer for those nights too tired to cook, then leftovers for work the next day! In fact, EVERY recipe of yours that I have tried [many, many] are delish!!!

    Thank you for your wonderful recipes! I’ve made the chili and corn chowder, I can’t decide which one I like more, both were amazing!!!! I got to use fresh corn from our garden in the chowder which made it seem extra special :)

    There are three we love! Potato soup, taco soup, and hamburger stew. We haven’t tried any of the others yet but plan to this fall. I love the short cuts while still having the rich flavor of your recipes!

    Christy, I cooked your chicken stew a few weeks ago and it was the best chicken stew ever. I was skeptical about the sugar, but it just added something fantastic. Always enjoy your recipes
