Happy Birthday to the Southern Plate Cookbook!
Today marks the one year anniversary of the official release of my book, and what a wonderful year it has been! I really put my heart into this book and I am so very grateful to everyone who has taken it into their homes and made a place for it in their hearts as well. I cannot thank you enough for your kind words and support. I am so very blessed to have you as part of the Southern Plate Family!
In honor of today, I thought I’d share a couple of videos. The first is me talking a little bit about the book, with some cute appearances by my kids (not that I’m biased ~wink~), and the second is the video of me seeing my book for the first time and sharing that experience with you!
Video Courtesy of William Morrow
I’ve gotten to travel around the country, do lots of fun local and national tv appearances, and even film with Paula Deen (whose quote appears on the cover of my book). It’s been a fun ride but I can’t imagine having taken it without you!
Here are some fun posts from last year around the time my book debuted:
- The day my book went on sale, I held a little Scavenger hunt in my hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. Click here for that post.**
- My very first book signing **
- A few photos from my cooking show at UNA last year (with links to watch videos)**

So I think I need to celebrate today.
I feel like I should make a cake but more importantly I’d love to celebrate with you.
If you have the book, please leave a comment below
(If you don’t have the book, I’d still love to hear from ya!)
Tell me your favorite recipe or story from the book or if there was something in particular that struck a chord with you.
I’d love for you to share your heart with us in the comments!
Maybe we should sing…
**Important Note: Please note that all dates at the bottom of these posts are from last year. I’m not doing a tour this year but I’d love for you to come to my Holiday Cooking show in Muscle Shoals, Alabama on November 10! We’re so excited about this year’s Holiday Cooking Show. It will feature a marketplace you can walk through ahead of time to browse, shop, and try all sorts of wonderful samples. After that, everyone will come into the auditorium for my cooking show and DOOR PRIZES GALORE! The great thing about this show is that after I finish preparing each item on stage, the UNA Culinary students will be coming out in the audience to give everyone a sample of what I just made! So we’ll visit, laugh, eat, laugh some more, and just have a wonderful evening together. This year also adds a child’s ticket price as well so bring the kiddies because I’ve got some special surprises in store for them! This is the only cooking show I’ll be doing so make plans to come on out and be sure and purchase your tickets today by clicking here. This is entirely a volunteer effort. All proceeds benefit the University of North Alabama HES Department.

I am new to Southern Plate since last year when your book came out, so I watched you open it for the 1st time today…gotta tell you I cried watching you open it, what a special moment for you and letting us be a part of that makes me feel like family…I am proud to be a part of the Southern Plate family. I just purchased your book as a celebration of a new sewing contract I just got that will allow me to work from home and be close to my kids. Your recipes allow me to do this as well and I really appreciate that. I cherish your spirit and the recipes you’ve given us….thank you for sharing a part of you and Congratulations on your 1 year book anniversary, may you have many more milestones =)
Love my autographed copy of your cookbook.
I made chicken planks Sunday and Monday night. Two nights in a row!!
In honor of the book turning one year old, I took it out to a movie and then took it to Chili’s. It told me it had fun!
What a wonderful year its been and I have been so blessed to share it with you. I know so many others have been too! I wouldn’t have traded any of it!
Who else is happy to see Bill back? we missed our Southern Plate beau!
I can’t wait to buy your cookbook and I’m so glad I found your blog. Thank you for sharing your love of food and family with us.
Everything we make from your recipes is fabulous! Ordering another for gift for my son and his new wife. He emailed last night and asked for “my” mac and cheese recipe! Just made the skillet apple cake–yummy!
I love your book, I use it all the time. The recipes remind me of my Moma’s cooking.
I do have the book, and I love it! I love the stories, I love the recipes, I love the whole thing. I use your recipes so often, and my family always asks if what I’m serving is yours! Thank you so much for dishes that they love, that are easy on my pocketbook, and make cooking fun!
I don’t have a lot of cookbooks (yet), but the Southern Plate cookbook is one I keep going back to. I even gave it to my mom for Christmas – wish I’d decided to do that early enough to get her signed like mine is. I’m sure it was a trip down memory lane for her, since her mom grew up on a farm in east Texas.
Happy 1st birthday, Southern Plate cookbook!
Dear Christie, I DO have your cookbook and use it almost every day! So far, the recipe I love, love, love is the sweet and sour green beans. The other night I made the mac n cheese for about the tenth time and my husband (after taking the first bite ) said….”This is the best mac n cheese on the planet!!” Just wanted you to know…I read a little bit on your site every day and when I check my email and don’t see something from you I have to admit I am a little disappointed. I know you’re a very busy lady though so I just go to an archive or two and get “my fix”. Thank you for reminding all of us who read your blog that it’s the simple things that matter most! You’re a real friend to all of us who “sit on your front porch and chat for a while”!
Happy Birthday Southern Plate cookbook1!!! Love ya Christie!!!!!!!!!!
Love you and your book!!!!!!!!! Happy birthday. In having fried peach pies in honor of this momentous occasion
Happy Anniversary.
I just recently got my copy of Southern Plate. I can’t say I have a favorite recipe. Between the stories and recipes, I travel back in time and back home to my grandmother’s kitchen. My family is from Southern Alabama and I know what it is like to have more then the normal set of grandparents. I was raised Southern and anyone from the South knows what that means. Whenever I need comfort food, I reach for things like Okra & Tomatoes, boiled peanuts, southern succatash (aka texas caviar), chicken n dumplings and anything covered in milk gravy (including fried shrimp).
A big THANK YOU to you Christie, for all the hard work you do. I swear you must be my missing cousin. Got any Cherry’s in your family tree?
Happy Birthday! Your video is so wonderful – it made me cry to see you send your new baby out in the world. Thank you for sharing your baby with all of us. I love mine!
Christy I love my book. Took me here in Michigan until just before Christmas last year to find it and I swallowed hard at the price. Never before have I spent so much on any book I have ever bought but it was well worth every peeny I spent on it.
And I have to admit I can not choose a favorite recipe from it. They are all great.
Congrats on your one year anniversary of the book.
Karan
Great cookbook, I love the stories that you share. I have tried several of the recipes so far, looking forward to many more.
Congratulations on 1 yr already.
I was one of the people who pre-ordered your book on Amazon before you finished editing it. I’ve really enjoyed it and so has my family. My favorite book story is the one about your daughter wanting you to read the book to figure out how to make candied apples.
Just played your video of you opening your book. I’m just as excited as the first time I saw it last year! So Happy for you and all that has happened to you! So Deserving!
p.s. Wade just walked in and asked if that was Ms Christy? Ran over here and waved just as you were saying bye. He thought you were waving bye at him. ~smiles~ <3 and Hugs!
I love this cookbook! I use it frequently. I even have random requests for your peanut butter icing, either on something or by itself! When is your next cookbook?
Soon as I have time to finish writing it
That is the most difficult part for me, just finding the time. With the holidays coming up so fast though, I think my best best is to drop of the map a good part of january and february to focus on it. Thank you SO MUCH! I hope you like the second one, too! It will be out in spring of 2013
EEK!! To long to wait! But understand all the work it must take. But loved the first one and wish the second one could come faster. Thank you for the good food and wonderful stories that remind me of my late mother and grandmother. It is a blessing, can you say that of a cook book?
HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY SOUTHERN PLATE COOKBOOK! HERE’S TO MANY MORE TO COME!
Love your book – have bought several as gifts and co-workers have purchased after I brought food to share from the book. Cannot wait for the next one!
I do have the book and bought a copy for my daughter too. I love all the stories–I actually can’t remember which I’ve read on the blog and which I’ve read in the book. I love the story of you drawing a pumpkin on your pregnant belly to try to cheer up your mom. I love all the stories of you and your relatives. Nearly all my older relatives are deceased and I love reading about all the wonderful things you do with your family.
I’ve had your cookbook for awhile now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Have purchased one for a gift as well. We grew up in Muscle Shoals, AL, and cook very similar to your recipes. Trying your recipes seems like our home cooking.
Reading what you write seems very much like talking to someone from home.
I preordered your cookbook and have loved it very much. I follow your website also. I hope to be able to come to your cooking show in November. My birthday is the 11th and that would be a great birthday present from my husband.
Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary!
Love the book! Love the stories…I smile and I cry when I read them. It’s by far the best cookbook I own or have ever seen. I like many of the recipes, but one that I’ve made lots is the Struesel topped Pumpkin Spice Muffins…..my eldest loves them!!!
Got your book last year as soon as I saw it. There ain’t nothing nowhere like good ole Southern cooking. You have done us proud Christy!!!
Christy,
I at 1st bought the book for myself. I sat up half the night reading it. Loved it. So went back to Amazon & bought 8 more copies. 1 for both of my daughters & 6 for special friends for Christmas presents. I can’t wait to see their faces when they open the book for the 1st time. I have tried alot of the recipes. They are things that my family likes & most of the ingredients are in my kitchen anyway. Out of all of my 100 cookbook this is my FAVORITE. You did a wonderful job. Thanks.
Though I’ve been following Southern Plate for about two years, I had to be away from home last fall for 2 1/2 months when my Dad (who doesn’t have a computer) had a stroke. So this is the first time I’ve seen this. Don’t blame you for being excited, as this is a BIG deal! Didn’t get the book til after the first of the year, but love it.
So happy for you!
My daughter gave me your cookbook as a Christmas gift…my favorite and most used recipe is the Crock pot chicken and dressing…it has become a family favorite. I love to read your stories and look at the wonderful pictures. So many stories remind me of my late parents, family dinners and church picnics. Finding your website has been a blessing in my life. God bless you and your family.
Christy-
Watching your video actually made me tear up!! I love that you have an amazing way of making me feel like a long lost relative whenever I read a post, or watch a video! I get so excited for you, and when you say something about your children, or tell a story about something Katy Rose said- I’m telling my Momma- “Hey, listen to this…”, it’s like I know you. I don’t have the cook book YET- I’ve made it well known around my house that I would very much love a copy (we have an anniversary coming up, so I’m holding off on buying it myself!). Most importantly- you keep the memory of MY Grandmother with me- for this I thank you the most. <3
Christy,
I probably have over 100 cookbooks. When I bought yours, it immediately became my cookbook “bible”. I love it. I have taken some of your recipe dishes to church and have been asked for the recipe. I “fess” up and give you credit. Sometimes I feel like I should get a royalty from the sale of your cookbook because I have recommended it to so many ladies who have bought it. Thanks for a great cookbook!!!
I got your book at the library and started to read it. I was only a chapter in and knew I had to own it. So I bought it and finished reading it and best of all cooking from it. I am a northern girl with the tastebuds of a southern girl. I made the chocolate cobbler first off and my family all gave me the thumbs up. All 6 of them. Since then I have been cooking away from your book and have a very happy family. Maybe I can get them to all move to the south? Thank you so much for your inspiration. I love the blog and your web site.
Have your book and am excited about your next one. Love your web site.
I bought your cookbook on hearing about it word of mouth. Oh my gosh, I read it like I would a novel and enjoyed every minute of it. Some the stories brought the most wonderful memories of food and family to my memory. My mother and grandmother were grand Southern cooks and the cookbook made me feel they were close by. And the food…..YUMMY! My 16 you grandson loves the food from the cookbook and tells me to cook something from that South book, with the good food in it quite often
Virginia
I do not have the cookbook YET. It is the only thing I have asked for my birthday next month. Can’t wait. Love SP!
I love my Southern Plate Cookbook. I use it all the time and the recipes have become family favorites! Can’t wait for your next book Christy!
I pre-ordered your wonderful cookbook last year from Amazon and had to leave Arkansas on 3 Oct for 2 weeks in New Jersey for a work assignment. My husband told me that my book had arrived at the end of that first week and I just couldn’t stand it – I was so far from home, my cookbook was waiting for me and it was going to be another week before I could sit down with it. Over the weekend I found a bookstore at one of the malls and asked if they had your book. They did and I stood there and browsed through it, just to get a little peek at what was in store for me when I got home. It was great!
I love that it’s so much more than a cookbook – it’s a narrative on life in the South. You paint pictures with your words that bring so many memories to mind. I laughed, I cried, I identified with so many things that you wrote about.
I’ve tried so many of the recipes – as a matter of fact Jordan Rolls are now a staple at our table. I took them to a church function last night. Pecan Pie Muffins are also a big hit.
Thank you for putting so much heart and soul into your work, and for how you continue to share your life with all of us. I’m partial to Southern authors and Southern cookbooks. Your book is a treasured part of my collection.
Love to you and your family!
I have two copies. One for the kitchen and one for my bedside table. Yes, I love to read cookbooks. Only very special cookbooks make it into the bedroom. (Yours and our 2 church cookbooks) Thank you for sharing your life with us.
My family loves the chicken dressing in the crockpot. We add the sides and cranberry sauce and have a Sunday dinner. Sooo good!
HAPPY bIRTHDAY!!!!!!! Love your recipes and your stories!!!!
Happy Birthday Southern Plate! I am sooo happy with the recipes in your book…the book stays right in my kitchen because I use the recipes almost every day. My hubby wants chicken planks frequently…and macaroni & cheese….and biscuits (oh thank goodness for your biscuits…they always come out soooo delicious). Everyday cooking -easy and delicious: thanks for sharing life’s stories and great Southern recipes.
I can’t believe it’s been a year already. I take very good care of my cookbook and it has a special place in our kitchen. Was really touched when you mailed out your autograph, so that’s inside the cover too.
Just one quick question, when is book number 2 coming out?
I love, love, love my autographed cookbook. I am a cookbook reader and have enjoyed reading the recipes – many of which remind me of those I make for my family, recipes passed down through my family. I have made many of your recipes and have many more I want to try.
Thank you for the wonderful cookbook, your daily emails, and Facebook posts.
So glad you reposted the video so that I could share your moment. How very exciting – and how very real you are in sharing your excitement and then turning it around to thank your fans. I have truly enjoyed becoming part of your Southern Plate family.
P.S. I almost write “I didn’t know you then,” since your SP “family” makes it feel as though we really have met, although I must make do with a virtual connection.
I bought the book about 5 months ago and love it. my fave so far is the banana bread recipe. soooo simple and tastes great
