My Favorite Quick Fix Snack – (greek yogurt meets molasses)
Sometimes you happen upon perfect combinations that just call out to the Southern tastebuds. Watermelon and Salt, Bacon and biscuits, Tea and sugar
Today I couldn’t resist sharing my new favorite combination. I’ve been eating this at least once a day for about a month now, especially when I was working on my book. And as soon as I’m done writing this, I’m going to fix myself another one because it is just that good. Sometimes this is breakfast, sometimes it’s lunch, sometimes it’s an afternoon snack. It’s always good though and if you are even remotely a yogurt or molasses person, you’ve got to try this.
If you’re not currently a yogurt person but love molasses (or honey), this may change your outlook!
Meet Greek Yogurt.
Not just any yogurt, greek yogurt is thicker and has more protein than regular yogurt. I don’t know a soul at Dannon and I’m not being paid or anything to blog about this particular brand (but hey, if anyone decides they want to pay me, my kids grow out of their clothes pretty fast…) but this is my favorite one to get. I get the individual cups most of the time because I can grab it and go if need be.
It is important to get plain. Not vanilla, but plain. That way we don’t have all of the added sugar and we can add our own. And believe me, some yogurt out there really racks up the sugar grams!
These little cups cost about a dollar each and I buy five or six a week to keep in the fridge.
You can also use this in place of sour cream in recipes if you like.
To make it like I do, add in one or two packages of Splenda.
I usually just add one but when I’m not feeling as sweet as I should be, an extra packet might help
You know you can use sugar if you want to, of course, but I’m saving my sweet calories for the grand finale!
Oh, and by the way, this little cup has 15 grams of protein and 0 fat.
and now it has two packets of splenda.. ~grins~
Stir that up really good.
Drizzle top with about one tablespoon of molasses.
OH how I love molasses. Deep, dark, sweet and bitter molasses.
Doesn’t that look good? Like a molasses sundae
If you don’t love molasses, this is also divine with a good drizzling of honey.
You CAN buy greek yogurt with honey on the bottom but that is just a big old mess. The honey is watered down and weak so just get plain (not vanilla) and make it yourself for the real deal.
Do you have favorite quick fix snack right now?
Tell me about it in the comments below!

That sounds really good! Thanks for posting it. The combo never would have crossed my mind. Dad loves molasses so this will be good for him.
Oh oh oh Bill…try it. SO GOOD! Let me know what Daddy says!
Gratefully,
Christy
Is molasses similar to sorghum syrup? I LOVE sorghum syrup, but don’t think I have ever tried molasses. My favorite thing to order at Cracker Barrell is biscuits with a side of sorghum.
We usually call it Sorghum Molasses, I’m just lazy
I bet you’d love this!
Gratefully,
Christy
That sure looks good!
Do you think it would be the same with blackstrap molasses?
NO….sorghum is another creature all together.
Blackstrap molasses are really strong.! Molasses that are golden in color are the best.
Yummy!
I love sorghum !! I am the only one in my family that does. I will be trying this for sure.
A piece of lunch ham (the long sliced kind), put about 2 tbsp of cream cheese on ham. It is a little sloppy. Put a whole pickle on that and roll it up. Great snack.
Oh, this is got to be um,um, good! I used to waitress at a local country restaurant, and we had a customer who told us about eating biscuits with sour cream slathered in the middle, then pour good ole country syrup (molasses) all over the top. They are to die for, and will always remind me of those great people.
I might have to try this. I eat absolutely plain yogurt every morning with breakfast, except I prefer ‘CHOBANI’ greek yogurt. I have had both but I like the ‘Chobani” better. I would never have thought of the molasses, very interesting !
I think I may try that this evening! One of my favorite quick snacks (and has been since I was quite young) is ritz crackers with a bit of cream cheese topped with a pickle. I remember making them for my husband one day and he turned his nose up at them… that is until he relented and had one. Now he is requesting them on a weekly basis!
My husband loves molasses, so I think I’ll give him some of this. We usually mix coconut oil, honey, and cinnamon until well blended, then add the yogurt (Stonyfield Plain) and mix again. It hardens the coconut oil as you stir and leaves flecks and chunks of the coconut oil, honey, and cinnamon taste throughout the yogurt. So yummy! Sometimes I grind flax seeds and add to the honey mix before adding it to the yogurt. The coconut oil, honey, and cinnamon mix is also very good on biscuits.
Can’t wait to try this, I also like low-fat cottage cheese with sliced up strawberries/splenda, or almost any kind of fruit, it often my late night snack, I am diabetic, so this extra bit of protein snack gets me through the night. Also like molasses, honey or agave nectar mixed with peanut butter on wheat bread as a late night snack…teh yogurt and molasses sounds wonderful, I’ll let you know if I don’t like it!
Very nice!
I have been doing something similar for breakfast. I use plain Dannon yogert, honey and homemade garnola (King Arthurs Crunchy Granola recipe). It is soooo good. You are right about the sugar in yogert. Just take a minute and look on the backs of the cartons…you may be surprised.
Apple slices and all natural peanut butter!
Greek yoghurt is my thing!!!! Add a dollop to my morning smoothies, make a yummy side condiment of yoghurt and finely chopped cucumbers (goes good with curries to tame the heat), a little tub of it with muesli spooned on top and stirred through for crunch and so on.
I don’t have Greek yogurt, but I have a big ol’ container of Dannon plain… and I just happen to have molasses for a spice cookie recipe I just made, so I’m going to be trying this in about 5 minutes! It looks delicious!
Sprinkle your yogurt molasses with chopped black walnuts. It’s even BETTER. Mmmm.
I just had black walnuts for the first time in my life! They are so much better than the others I have had!
This looks yummy! When I’m not in the mood for sweets, my favorite quick fix snack is any vegetable (jicama or celery sticks, baby peppers, carrots, etc..) dipped in chunky bleu cheese dressing mixed with Frank’s Buffalo hot sauce. So delicious!
Actually, Fage (pronounced Fay-eh) Greek yogurt is best. Comes 0% ans 2% fat. reasonable in 35 oz. containers at WalMart.. just add a few tablespoons. Of local Alabama honey…. And you don’t need any other sweetner!!
Well I like greek yogurt (with fruit) and I trust you, so I can’t wait to try it.
I love to snack on Chips and Salsa or popcorn. I have tried plain yogurt on my baked potatoes instead of sour cream. Might have to try this…I have never had molessess or at least I can remember if I had.
Oh my goodness! This is good and couldn’t have come at a better time. The doctor ordered an antibiotic for me that upsets tummies. I paid for my antibiotic and headed to the dairy section and got my favorite unsweetened Bulgharian yogurt with live acidolpholous (sp?). Came home made myself a bowl of yogurt and added some fresh strawberries for a little sweetness, opened my email and there was your message. I went straight for my jar of Grandma’s Molasses and poured it on. DH walked by at that moment and commented “Hmmm”, as if to say “You must have lost your mind!” Haha. It is good! I feel this is a “God breeze moment”. Thank you so much for posting it t this precise time!!!!!!
Mini pita with a small spoonful of cream cheese, a couple of baby spinach leaves and chopped tomatoes sprinkled with a little salt and pepper. Put in microwave for 20 seconds. YUM!
My husband and I have a similar thing for dessert quite often: Greek yogurt (I get big containers at Sam’s) with raw honey and blackberries or raspberries on top – yum!
We just made plain yogurt overnight (so, so easy and CHEAP) and are eating it with honey and walnuts for breakfast.
Not only is it easy to make your own yogurt (and cheap… and healthy) it’s easy to make your own Greek yogurt, too. All you do is pour your yogurt into a piece of cheesecloth and let it strain out. The end result is thick and wonderful.
You can also use homemade yogurt in place of sour cream and we’ve used it in place of buttermilk in pancakes and cornbread.
I’m happy to have found your blog!
Could you share how you make yogurt? Would love to try making my own.
Yes Jennifer. Would you share your yogurt recipe?
I really don’t care for yogurt but a quick snack I enjoy is graham crackers with a light spread of plain cream cheese. Their are a few flavors I’ve tried that taste okay too but plain is the best.
OK, my “guilty pleasure” snack….
Pretzel rods (you know, the long sticks) dipped in peanut butter. Yum.
My breakfast every morning when warm weather arrives is Greek plain 0 fat yogurt (a different brand because I just like it better) and a cup of thawed blueberries sweetened with Truvia. Will have to try the honey instead of Truvia to sweeten mine as I keep the perfect food “honey” on hand.
Try it with maple syrup and some granola on top. it is so yummy
Love Oikos Greek yogurt, just discovered it last month and havent tried a flavor yet that I haven’t loved. Can’t wait to try this with honey. Thanks for the post!
I think maybe Steens Cane Syrup would be great also!
Love Chabani too.
I have just recently fallen in love with Dannon Plain Yogurt – but I top mine with Bear Naked Fruit and Nut granola! SO tasty!!
My new favorite snack is that same yogurt with a big spoonful of all-fruit type jelly stirred into it. My favorite is this blueberry-and-cherry jelly that is HEB’s store brand (Texas’ best grocery store!) Just adds about 30 calories to the yogurt – it’s yummy, too. But i will definitely try the molasses topping, too, Christy!
Plain Greek Yogurt with honey, fruit and a sprinkling of Kashi Crunch cereal is the perfect snack and a go to breakfast for me! I LOVE yogurt and Greek yogurt is like clotted cream to me. I second the nomination for Fage–it is unmatched in textrue and flavor!
Try low fat cottage cheese on bread or flat buns then spread a little molasses on top, makes a great sandwich. With 9 brothers and sisters, we grew up on this.
YUM!
My latest snack is a peanut butter and Riccota cheese sandwich. I know it sounds odd, but it is delicious!
I LOVE yogurt! I was allergic to it as a child (all milk pretty much) but once God fixes that, I was able to eat yogurt. My favorite was always the kind my Dad made. He would use a warm/hot plate of some kind and make yogurt on it. You know – I need to ask him about that, and I need some more honey! GREAT reminder Christy!! Hugs- Carol
I love the greek yogurt with honey and granola. I’ll have to try the molasses though. My fave greek yogurt is Chobani followed by Fage (maybe because they don’t carry Fage in my grocery store). My quick fix snack is ritz crackers with sharp cheddar block cheese and marshmallows on top. You stick them in the toaster oven or under the broiler until the cheese melts and the marshmallows are toasted and it is some kinda good. It’s the perfect mix between savory and sweet.
i love non-fat greek yogurt too!! I mix it with stevia, a tiny bit of peanut butter, and cocoa powder. Tastes like chocolate peanut butter ice cream…sorta….close enough!!
This looks wonderful Christy! I love to have something cool, creamy and sweet that doesn’t have a ton of sugar in it. I think I’ll use my Stevia to sweeten it instead of the Splenda. I do love molasses AND greek yogurt, but never thought of combining the two!
My family’s favorite quick fix snack growing up was low fat cottage cheese scooped with potato chips. Creamy and salty goodness. If you’ve never tried it, you’re missing out!
I do this with honey and sliced bananas, so good!
This sounds yummy ~ think I will try this evening! Plain yogurt is much better than all those with sugar added. If you like it a little sweeter, try adding a little of your own homemade strawberry freezer jam ~ delish!!
My newest addiction is greek yogurt. I have one every morning during the week. Sometimes I put yummy granola on top. My absolute favorite is Dannon’s honey flavored. Mmmmmm!! Now I must try it plain and add my own honey. Can’t wait!!
This yogurt is sooo good!! I love their non-fat Black Cherry yogurt. I try to always have them in my refrigerator. It’s a dessert for me or a snack.
I love Greek yogurt with a squeeze of agave nectar and a sprinkle of homemade granola. If I have some fresh berries, I sprinkle a couple on top. Love this for my dessert…and my husband does too.
Oh yep, homemade pizza easy… Tortilla roll, bit of spaghetti sauce spread, top with shredded cheese blend, 5-6 slices of pepperoni, in the oven 400 for less than 10 minutes… easy and so yummy….
my favorites snacks are ritz crackers and sharp cheddar cheese, vanilla wafers with catsup snacks for days in one bag and anything with mustard on it
