Big Plans For A Flower

It was a while back, shortly after Valentine’s Day, Katy and I were in a store together when she asked, “Mama, if I put something in the buggy and buy it with my allowance will you pretend you don’t see it?”

I smiled down at her. “I know nothing”, I responded, and respectfully turned away, pretending not to see the little bud vase with a heart on it that said “Mom”. I kept up the act all the way to the checkout, and dutifully handed her the bag, with her secure in my obliviousness to what she was doing.

When we got home she went out into the yard for a while and came in later to ask “Do you think our buttercups are going to bloom at all this year?”.

“I’m not sure, Katy. Looks like they skipped a year again. No telling why.”

She went back out and studied the yard some more, coming in disappointed. The vase seemed to be forgotten but I figured it was for Mother’s Day so I’d have Ricky take her to get some flowers as it got a little closer and filed all of this away in the back of my mind as Katy got busy with other things.

A few days ago, though, as we were walking to the car, her eyes lit up and she turned and ran to an iris with buds on the end. “Look Mama!! This flower is going to bloom!!! Do you know about how long it will take?” I looked at it and took a guess “Hmm, hard for me to tell you for sure but I’d think within a few days, maybe a week.” She beamed at that flower and looked up to the heavens with a thankful smile.

In the car the excitement was just too much for her to contain. “I have big plans for that flower, Mama. I won’t tell you what it is but you are going to love it, just wait and see.”

The rest of the day was spent enjoying the sun and chatting away as we ran our errands, cooked supper, finished school work and my blog work. She checked the iris once more before bed, just to make sure. Alas, it was still a bud.

Yesterday she walked outside and saw the iris in full bloom. I was standing in the kitchen when she ran into the house, the door slamming behind her, and then ran right back out again.

“Close your eyes!” she yelled, as she ran in a second time.

I replied, “They’re closed!”

“Don’t open them!” she yelled. “

“Okay!” I yelled back.

“I’m making you a surprise!”

Grinning from ear to ear with my eyes closed, I listened as she went into the bathroom and turned the water on to fill the vase, knowing full well what my girl was up to. She grew under my heart, I know this child. Then, her footsteps went out to my desk and moments later stood in front of me.

“Okay, you can open them now. Go check your desk.”

I went out to find the beautiful Iris in my beautiful vase, a gift from my beautiful Katy.

“I told you I had big plans for that flower, Mama.”

Blessings overflow.

  3. Nothing could be more perfect for that vase as far as I am concerned.
My mothers name is Iris and she passed away in 2010. I think of her every time I see an Iris.
