Give A Penny, Get A Penny

Most gas stations in the South have little change dishes by the register. If you’re paying for a transaction and need an extra penny or two, you simply take one from the dish. People then reciprocate this good turn by dropping a few coins in the dish from time to time, thereby creating a community bank of sorts, based on goodwill.

So in that spirit, this is Southern Plate’s “Give A Penny, Get A Penny” page.” I dearly love positive quotes and am always scouring the web for more so I thought this would be a great place to compile all of those. I’ll post mine, you post yours, and we can all “Give A Penny” when we have one and come back to “Get A Penny” when we need one.

I’ll also draw from these quotes to include at the bottom of my posts and emails that I send out to Southern Plate readers and be sure to credit the person who provided it, so include a link to your blog if you have one.

I would consider it a personal favor if you’d take the time to share a quote of motivation or positivity in the comments section below. Quote yourself, your Mama, someone famous, or our best friend “Anonymous”, it doesn’t matter, long as you drop your penny and then come back on one of those days when you feel like you might need one yourself.

Gratefully,
Christy

  1. The difference between an ordinary life and an extraordinary life is finding extraordinary things in an ordinary life.

Hi Christy….love your view on concentrating on the positive vs negative. It’s a struggle sometimes, but if one realizes one mood/attitude you can adjust your “sails” on your journey through life.

  2. I read this one somewhere and believe it heartily. “Give the devil and inch and he’ll become the ruler.”
I am so enjoying reading all the other submissions; some I’ve heard before and a fair few I have not. Love, love, love your web site:)

  3. About a year ago, I was in the Hallmark Store and this quote was on a small decorated plate. Needless to say, I purchased the plate and it has brought endless smiles and laughs to family and friends when they have come to visit……” Enjoy life, think of all the people on the Titanic who passed up dessert”.

Have a great day and I hope I brought a smile to your face.

    Carole 🙂

    1. PS. The moral of the story in “So Dear To My Heart” is that “It’s what ya do with what ya got, that turns out in the end!” (That is the lyrics of a song in the movie.) Actually, cooking is a little like that sometimes… ha ha.

I’m glad that Christy is making the most of her wonderful knowledge of cooking, and sharing her love of it with others.
      Thanks, Christy!!

    1. Absolutely!! Amen! Faith, optimism, and stick-to-it-ivity are key factors in living a happy, productive life. There is an absolutely delightful movie from the 1960’s called, “So Dear To My Heart”, with Burl Ives in it, and also the children that were in “Song of the South”. It’s an old Walt Disney movie that illustrates “Stick-to-it-ivity”. It’s about a little boy living with his Granny on a farm, that fights the odds to raise the runt of the litter, and take his special farm animal to the county fair. This little boy has industrious determination, too. I can’t tell you anymore, or I’ll ruin the story for you! Granny is played by the actress that played George’s mother in the movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life.”
I know it will warm your heart, and it’s fun to watch with children.
