Give A Penny, Get A Penny

Most gas stations in the South have little change dishes by the register. If you’re paying for a transaction and need an extra penny or two, you simply take one from the dish. People then reciprocate this good turn by dropping a few coins in the dish from time to time, thereby creating a community bank of sorts, based on goodwill.

So in that spirit, this is Southern Plate’s “Give A Penny, Get A Penny” page.” I dearly love positive quotes and am always scouring the web for more so I thought this would be a great place to compile all of those. I’ll post mine, you post yours, and we can all “Give A Penny” when we have one and come back to “Get A Penny” when we need one.

I’ll also draw from these quotes to include at the bottom of my posts and emails that I send out to Southern Plate readers and be sure to credit the person who provided it, so include a link to your blog if you have one.

I would consider it a personal favor if you’d take the time to share a quote of motivation or positivity in the comments section below. Quote yourself, your Mama, someone famous, or our best friend “Anonymous”, it doesn’t matter, long as you drop your penny and then come back on one of those days when you feel like you might need one yourself.

Gratefully,
Christy

Thank you Mrs. McMurry for sharing that beautiful story. I hope you don’t mind I’m going to elaborate a bit and make it into a card for my hubby for Valentine’s Day. God bless you!

    1. Dear Valerie Lynne – I don’t mind at all! in fact I’m so pleased that someone else can enjoy what I’ve enjoyed. And I know your hubby will be just as pleased as I was when I read that little note. You see….we simply cannot take our relationships for granted, can we? we never know when one of us can be snatched away. I was not given much chance of recovering this past winter……and today am enjoying wonderful health. How long will it last? no one knows….but, this I do know…..for right now, I have everything I need, I have a faith in God that has kept me, and God has given me the most wonderful husband to stand by me all during my journey…..and I also have the most fantastic support group of those who care and love me. I am content. Thank you for enjoying my special hubby, too!/julie mcmurry

  5. After I was home from surgeries and prior to my chemo beginning (I had been diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer…..and now in November am enjoying being in remission)….the best quote my dear hubby laid on my Bible for me to find…..it’s lengthy, but fits right in with Southern Cooking:
“You are the cheese to my macaroni. You are the horizon to my sky. You are the bacon to my eggs; you are the laces to my sneakers. You are the jelly to my peanut butter; you are the smile to my face. You are the gravy to my mashed potatoes. You are the bubbles to my bath. You are the milk to my cookie; you are the ink to my pen. You are the ketchup to my French fries..you are the water to my ocean. You are the icing on my cupcake.” Do you see why I feel so blessed?

  6. After my exploratory surgery for advanced ovarian cancer, my dear hubby began giving me a special quote each morning…he would place that day’s saying on my Bible for me to find when I woke. That was 1/27/2010, in between 2 hospital stays/surgeries. Here’s the first one…
“To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world. An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is an adventure wrongly considered.” G.K. Chesterton
He has not missed a day…..even when I took a 12 day visit to my sister’s place end of October, 2010 (I am in remission!!). When I returned, there was a tiny stack of little pieces of paper with each day’s saying for each day I was gone. I am so blessed!
