A Quick Look At The Recipe

  • Recipe Name: Classic Southern Tomato Sandwich
  • Main Ingredients: soft white bread, ripe heirloom or beefsteak tomato, mayonnaise, salt, black pepper, basil leaves or chopped chives

A Sandwich Just Like Grandma Used to Make

I grew up watching my grandmother make these with tomatoes warm from the vine and a jar of Duke’s mayo always close by. She kept it simple: bread, tomatoes, salt, and mayo, and somehow, that was always enough. Over the years, I’ve added little twists here and there, like fresh basil or chives, but the heart of the tomato sandwich remains the same.

Ready in just 5 minutes with no cooking required, and a great way to use up garden tomatoes or farmers market finds, this Southern tomato sandwich is a summertime staple that will never go out of style.

Reader Review

“This recipe brought back so many wonderful memories of summers at my grandparents and their garden. We would eat a lot of tomato “sammiches”, as my gramp called them. Only thing we did different was a thin slice of onion and lettuce added to it. So goood and comforting, especially on the hot days.”

Ingredients to make a tomato sandwich, featuring white bread, tomatoes, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, and basil.

Ingredients

  • Soft white bread (soft homemade bread works best)
  • Ripe heirloom or beefsteak tomato
  • Mayonnaise (Duke’s is the Southern favorite!)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • Optional: Fresh basil leaves (or a sprinkle of chopped chives)

Helpful Tips for a Tasty Tomato Sandwich

  • Use soft white sandwich bread. This isn’t the time for sourdough or hearty multigrain. Soft, squishy bread soaks up the tomato juice just right.
  • Go with high-quality mayo. Duke’s is the gold standard in the South, but Hellmann’s or homemade mayo will also work.
  • Tomatoes should be at peak ripeness. Slightly overripe is actually perfect. I always go for ones that are heavy, deeply colored, and smell like summer.
  • Eat it right away. I can’t stress this enough. The moment it gets soggy, the magic is gone. Make it, eat it, love it.
  • Want extra crunch? Add a leaf of butter lettuce or a couple of thin cucumber slices. Still traditional, just with a little texture twist.

How to Make a Classic Southern Tomato Sandwich

1. Spread the Mayo

To start, slather a generous layer of mayo on both slices of bread. Don’t be shy with it!

2. Slice the Tomatoes

Next, slice your tomato into nice thick rounds. We’re talking at least ¼-inch thick here.

Tip: Thicker slices hold up better and prevent the sandwich from becoming too watery. Heirloom or beefsteak tomatoes work best for flavor and juiciness.

3. Salt

Now, give those tomato slices a light sprinkle of salt and let them hang out for 1-2 minutes.

Tip: This pulls out excess moisture and brings out the tomato’s natural sweetness, so don’t skip this step!

4. Layer Up

Layer the tomato slices onto one of your mayo-slathered bread slices. Finish it off with a crack of black pepper and a little extra salt if you’re feeling it.

Optional: Add basil leaves or chopped chives for a little herbal freshness. It’s a great way to elevate the classic without changing it too much.

5. Serve & Enjoy

Top with your second slice of bread, give it a gentle press, and dig in right away.

Enjoy!

Classic Southern Tomato Sandwich FAQs

Can I use store-bought tomatoes for this?

Yes, but it’s best when made with peak-season tomatoes from a local farm stand or garden. Off-season tomatoes can be watery and less flavorful. I recommend beefsteak or heirloom.

How can I prevent the sandwich from getting soggy?

Spread mayo edge to edge, salt the tomatoes and let them rest briefly, and eat the sandwich right after assembling.

Is this sandwich good for a crowd or party?

It’s best made fresh and eaten right away, but you can prep the ingredients ahead and assemble just before serving. For parties, try cutting into quarters and serving as tea sandwiches.
