Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?

When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…

And put a bowl in front of her.

Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…

And add a pat of butter.

And a sprinkling of sugar.

And give it a good stir.

And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.

Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.

It sure was good.

Did you eat this when you were little?

Was there some other comfort food that you remember along these lines? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

  1. My Mama would often fix rice for breakfast. I only like butter on my but my siblings liked it with sugar. Awesome

  2. I was always happy when we had rice at dinner because I knew that I would have rice for breakfast. My mother added raisins that plumped up and brown sugar. I shall have to make some for myself.

  3. My grandmother never did this with rice but she would make us butter & sugar sandwiches sometimes or if we were really good she’d stir syrup into peanut butter & put that on some bread. So yummy!!! Sweet, sweet memories that sure do make me miss her so much!!!

    1. Peanut butter and syrup? Oh my goodness after all of these years I thought this was only a “Thronesbery family” thing for no one else I have ever shared this with has ever even heard of such a thing. After supper, if my Mom did not have time to make a desert, my Dad would reach behind him into the cabinet and take out the peanut butter and syrup and ask someone to please pass the butter (the real stuff) and mix a big ole plate of peanut butter, butter and syrup for all to share. We knew that if Mom made biscuts that we would be having this for desert almost every time. This is one of my several childhood comfort foods that I still make today, Another one that I love is a peanut butter and fresh hot bacon sandwich. Sweet and salty with some crunch and ooooh so good. Thank you Tamela for sharing this memory.

      1. Back thirty-something years ago, I had inlaws that were still in high school in a little town in Central Texas. For children who had forgotten their lunch money or just flat didn’t have money, the lunch room ladies would mix up a huge bowl of peanut butter and syrup, and put it on the counter with a couple loaves of light bread.

  4. My Mom, being a single Mother with 5 kids, served this to us A lot while we were growing up!! I still love this dish, but never ever fix it. I need to make me a bowl of it SOON… Thanks for bringing back memories!!

  5. Anytime we had rice with supper, at the end of the meal Mama would add butter and sugar to what was left for dessert. I had forgotten that. When I was a kid, for breakfast I would have bananas, milk and sugar. I don’t know why I skipped the cereal, but I loved it. I offered it to my daughter, but she thought it was weird.

Speaking of memories, Christy, did you have any special foods when you were sick as a child? Mama made poached eggs when I was sick. Apple juice was for sick days. Grape juice was for special occasions. Orange juice was for daily life. I love poached eggs. I haven’t had them in years. Gotta poach me some eggs soon!

  6. This was my father-in-law’s (Dad’s) favorite thing when there was left over rice or Mom would just make it with raisins and cinnamon. Yummy! I love rice this way!
