Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?

When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…

And put a bowl in front of her.

Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…

And add a pat of butter.

And a sprinkling of sugar.

And give it a good stir.

And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.

Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.

It sure was good.

Did you eat this when you were little?

Was there some other comfort food that you remember along these lines? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

  1. It,s one of the dish specially in Holy month of Ramadhan in gulf states,
first we caramelize the sugar(golden color) add the butter, saffron mixed with rosewater , ground cardamom and hot water and let caramelize sugar to dissolve and the rice and cook as normal and we serve with fried fish..

  2. Sweet rice must just be one of those “Grandma” things. My Granny used to always make rice for breakfast, except she spoiled us to using brown sugar on it instead of white. Mmm, I can still remember her breakfasts of gravy & biscuits, fried eggs, bacon, sausage and rice with brown sugar. She is now 86 (my Pa-Paw is 92) and no longer able to really cook. We live next door so I now cook for them. All those years, she blessed our family with her love and cooking so I feel it’s the least I can do to take care of them and share my heart with them while they’re still here. Fact is, they hold a huge part of my heart and memories.

    1. God bless you. Your story really touched me. You are so lucky to still have your grandparents, and they are lucky to have you, too!

    2. That is very sweet. Glad to hear about people respecting and taking care of their parents and grandparents. 🙂

    3. That’s awesome. I took care of my mom’s parents when they no longer could. Started when I was about 16 and need when my grandma died on my 19th birthday. I wish I could’ve done the same for my other grandparents who only recently passed. I love hearing stories like this bc young people today have no sense of responsibility when it comes to their elders. They fed us and changed our diapers right? It’s only natural that we do the same for them. I don’t even know how I ended up reading this but now I’ve got to have some rice with sugar and butter.

  5. Oh goodness – yes! I eat rice a lot as a snack or even a late night snack. Sometimes it just helps me go to sleep better. Good memories 🙂

  6. We like rice for breakfast too. Also, I loved the bowl you served it in, I have quite a few of these “Jewel Tea” dishes saved over the years. Brings back lots of good memories!

  7. my mother would make rice pudding and would cook it with cinnamon sticks. she would give them to me once the pudding was ready. I would lick the rice off of them. (she would also let me lick the cake mix off the whisk. fond memories!
