How many of you remember crumbling up cornbread into a glass of sweet milk and eating it with a spoon after supper?

This was a special treat we ALWAYS did when spending the night with my grandparents, only they used buttermilk.

If you ever find yourself wondering why folks call whole milk “sweet milk” just pour yourself up a big old glass of buttermilk! After a sip or two of that, it will make perfect sense!

  1. I also grew up on cornbread and sweet milk. A little salt and pepper and onion and I’m a happy camper. I recall eating it from a ” snuff glass ” as a child.

  2. Bringing back memories today!! My dad LOVED it, but he would also sometimes stir in chopped onion and tomato. Looked disgusting to me, but he thought it was one of the best meals in the world. I prefer mine hot out of the skillet smeared with some butter 🙂

  3. Not a fan of CB with buttermilk but I like it with sweet milk. This was my grandparents’ Sunday supper when they were by themselves on Sunday night, which usually wasn’t often. When they had grandkids, they made grilled cheese sandwiches for us to eat while we watched Bonanza.

  4. I love corn bread and it is good with anything….buttermilk, or milk or whatever. Nothing better. I don’t make it a lot because I want to eat the whole thing!!!

  5. Love buttermilk and cornbread but haven’t had it in a long while. Grew up in Georgia and ate this a lot when I was little. Your facebook status says you are missing your grandparents today. Me too… today is my grandfather’s birthday. Died back in ’89. I have my profile picture set to a picture of him in honor of his birthday! Love your facebook statuses! 🙂

  6. My parents, grandparents, great-grandparents etc all ate it. So did my husbands. But none of us kids likes it. Guess the tradition will stop with us. Love cornbread just not in milk, sweet or otherwise.

  7. I noticed someone mentioned cracklins and I have a funny story. I was at my mothers and found some cooked apples in the fridge so I baked an apple cake. I noticed as the cake was cooking there was and over abundance of grease!!! Well it turns out those were not cooked apples but CRACKLINS!!! I no longer bake!! 🙂
