How many of you remember crumbling up cornbread into a glass of sweet milk and eating it with a spoon after supper?

This was a special treat we ALWAYS did when spending the night with my grandparents, only they used buttermilk.

If you ever find yourself wondering why folks call whole milk “sweet milk” just pour yourself up a big old glass of buttermilk! After a sip or two of that, it will make perfect sense!

  1. My Grandmother called it tumblyn (sp?) (pronounced: tumble-in). I think they would do buttermilk while us kids used whole milk. I’ve also put left-over cake in milk too. Similar to another post, we too would also get Juicy Fruit gum on our visits.

  2. This is my favorite evening snack. I would rather have cornbread and buttermilk that a bowl of ice cream! Sometimes when I don’t have cornbread I eat buttermilk and fritos, not quite the same but still good.

  3. Never tried it with sweet milk, but possibly because I have never liked sweet milk. I love buttermilk, with or without cornbread.

  4. Mmmm! Take a bit of some green onion and then a bite of that buttermilk soaked cornbread. Might be as close to heaven as someone like me can get. 😉

  5. Love Cornbread and Buttermilk. It is hard to find a store bought brand that can taste as good as homemade. You have to have sour and thick.
Chop up a vidalia onion or make the cornbread with some cracklings and it is heaven.
    Brings back so many memoriers
