Today’s top five is a list of five things on SouthernPlate

that I really want you to make!

Mama’s Hoe Cake

Hoe Cake varies from family to family. Most traditional recipes for hoe cake are based on corn meal but my Mama’s is more of a big old fluffy-as-a-cloud biscuit with a crunchy crust. Delicious with homemade apple butter.

Chicken Planks

Delicious, tender fried chicken with the shortest ingredient list you’ve ever seen! Many a bicycle was parked out front of our house on the nights Mama made these!

Southern Steak and Milk Gravy

I like to find cube steak on sale and package in individual quart sized freezer bags to mix this up or a quick lunch for myself sometimes. Mama used to make it all the time and she’d pour the gravy all over it and put the whole whowha in a big old bowl.

Yellow Cake with old Fashioned Peanut Butter Icing

One of those old fashioned fudge like icing recipes you just don’t find anymore.

Frozen cranberry banana salads

A very special recipe from a very special lady. Mix up a batch of these and store them in the freezer to bring out for a dessert treat anytime.

  2. The peanut butter icing on top of the peanut butter brownies is my new favorite thing!!!
I found your book waiting for me when I arrived home yesterday. I sat in the sun with the dogs and read it while I watched my hens scratching around in the grass. Talk about a perfect day!
We had the corn chowder for supper with leftover ham. It was great and I can’t wait to try the rest. Beautiful book. Thanks for all you do!

  3. I made Mama’s Hoe Cake for dinner tonight. I served it with some leftover Chicken Stew. Thanks for the recipes. They were sooooooo good and easy!

  4. Yum! The hoe cake and the peanut butter frosting are two of my favorites! Not together of course.
I got my cookbook on the 5th, the day it shipped. I was so excited! I’ve already made three of the recipes (sour cream hashbrown casserole, sweet and sour green beans, and peach crisp), and as is the case with every recipe of yours I’ve ever tried, they were all delicious! Thank you so much for sharing your family’s recipes, you’re making the world a better place one recipe at a time. 🙂

  5. I got my cookbook today and am THRILLED with it! I can’t wait to make all of the mouth-watering recipes…now which one to choose first…! 🙂

  6. I was so excited yesterday when the UPS man came with my copy of your book! I sat down right away and my daughter said. Mommy did you get a new Southern Plate Book!! I said yes I am so happy! She said cool lets find something to cook out of it!!

  7. I guess you can say I’ve been celebrating your book by doing some home cooking this week. First we had the rustic stew. We also had the hoe cake, which by the way is the best biscuit you’ll ever put in your mouth. Not only is it good with apple butter, but it is heaven with some homemade white gravy made from bacon grease. I cooked banana bread last night. Canned apple butter last weekend. I’ve got the ingredients to make the chocolate chip cookies and apple dapple cake. Whew, I have so enjoyed being in my kitchen this week. And I love that I have a little or a whole lot, of Southern Plate with me! Now if I could just get that book. Oh well, pay day is next Friday. Yay!!! This isn’t in your book, but I believe we are going to have butter beans and sausage tonight!!
