Today’s top five is a list of five things on SouthernPlate

that I really want you to make!

Mama’s Hoe Cake

Hoe Cake varies from family to family. Most traditional recipes for hoe cake are based on corn meal but my Mama’s is more of a big old fluffy-as-a-cloud biscuit with a crunchy crust. Delicious with homemade apple butter.

Chicken Planks

Delicious, tender fried chicken with the shortest ingredient list you’ve ever seen! Many a bicycle was parked out front of our house on the nights Mama made these!

Southern Steak and Milk Gravy

I like to find cube steak on sale and package in individual quart sized freezer bags to mix this up or a quick lunch for myself sometimes. Mama used to make it all the time and she’d pour the gravy all over it and put the whole whowha in a big old bowl.

(This post is old as Methuselah!)

Yellow Cake with old Fashioned Peanut Butter Icing

One of those old fashioned fudge like icing recipes you just don’t find anymore.

Frozen cranberry banana salads

A very special recipe from a very special lady. Mix up a batch of these and store them in the freezer to bring out for a dessert treat anytime.

  1. I just know you are gonna make it on that list! I cannot imagine it happening to a sweeter person either. Due to the economy here on the coast I am unable to buy one, but you have my prayers and bestest wishes! I feel like I know you….ain’t that a hoot?! God bless you and your sweet little family!

  2. It’s here!!!! I got my cookbook today, and I had to stop a minute and thank you for your introduction to the first chapter. It actually made me tear up a little. I’m a southern girl at heart, but I’ve lived up north for all my married life. You brought back memories of my family growing up, and all those noisy dinners with all those deviled eggs and sweet tea. Thanks for all you share, Christy. Keep it comin!

  3. I LOVE all of your recipes, have made the chicken planks and hoecake a million times!! I am crossing my fingers that my husband buys me your cookbook for Christmas, I am planning on getting one for my mom and sister! Love your site, you are fabulous.

  4. I got my copy of the cookbook in mail yesterday!!! I was so excited. I’ll have to admit it’s the first time I’ve read parts of a cookbook to my family. My extended family is from the area around where you are Christy and I got tickled the first time I heard your voice. You sounded exactly like I thought you would. It’s like a little touch of home each day.

  5. I have made the hoe cakes, southern steak and chicken planks. The others will have to be made with splenda sometime in the future now that dad has become diabetic.

  6. Received your book yesterday, sent the evening going through it and bookmarking the ones I have to try. I am going to try freezing apple this weekend.

  7. Love the recipes! Although I just found this website through the “Southern Living” article I am already a huge fan! I am excited about cooking again! Hopefully my family will be too! 🙂
