Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?

When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…

And put a bowl in front of her.

Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…

And add a pat of butter.

And a sprinkling of sugar.

And give it a good stir.

And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.

Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.

It sure was good.

Did you eat this when you were little?

Was there some other comfort food that you remember along these lines? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

  1. Never had this in my life and of course now I’ve GOT to try it! Comfort food at our house was a soft-boiled egg, smashed up in a bowl and topped with oleo (!), my mama’s potato soup (best I’ve ever had in my life), or a glass of warm jello. Preferably the strawberry-banana flavor. I know … weird. But oh so comforting!

  2. I was grown and married before I knew anyone didn’t eat rice with butter and sugar. I was eating dinner at my new in-laws house and they had rice with gravy over it. I never knew anyone who ate it this way, but it was sure good.
We had this for dessert many times when I was growing up. Thanks for bringing back sweet memories, Christy.

  3. I ate this growing up and still occasionally will make a bowl. I add milk to mine as well. Haven’t had any in a few years, thanks for the memories 🙂

  4. Loved this as a kid and love it now many years later ! Thought I was the only one ! Also loved big fluffy hot buttered biscuits with sugar in them, still do !

  5. When I was a child we’d have rice this way. This was the only way my Dad would eat rice
with just sugar, no butter. He and I would have a bowl after dinner, whenever rice was on the menu. The Hall bowl in the picture is the same dishes my Mom had. This all brings back many sweet memories. Thanks Cristy

  6. Yes, we sure did….but loved a sprinkle of cinnamon on it. My favorite comfort food of all came as a result of loving cinnamon so much….kept a shaker of sugar/cinnamon mix to sprinkle on toast and have with hot chocolate on cold mornings. Still love to make that even now…just as yummy as ever!
