This delicious watermelonade recipe includes hints of honey and lime juice for the most refreshing summer drink.

watermelonade

I have a difficult time making recipes like this watermelon lemonade with a watermelon because I feel like watermelon, in and of itself, is about as perfect as it can get. Just hand me a salt shaker and a knife and get out of my way!

But today’s watermelonade recipe is a special exception. Why? Because it is basically watermelon that you can drink. No knife, no stickiness, sit back with a straw, and drink the whole melon if the mood hits ya. I add just enough “extra” stuff to enhance the flavor, being careful not to detract from it.

These extra ingredients include lime juice to put the “lemonade” in watermelonade. Then I also add honey for sweetness and a touch of salt, which is totally optional. The instructions are as easy as they come. Just pop all the ingredients in a blender and blend it up until it’s liquefied. Then pour it into a cup filled with crushed ice and you have watermelon lemonade. This is the perfect refreshing drink to enjoy during summer.

So next time you go to buy (or pick) a watermelon, buy (or pick) two instead. Eat one, drink the other. You can’t go wrong! If you wanna see how I do it, skip right on down to the first picture.

And now for the watermelonade.

Storage

This is best served immediately. But just adjust the ingredients depending on how many servings you’re after.

Recipe Notes

  • Feel free to substitute the lime juice for bottled or fresh lemon juice.
  • Another popular substitution is using granulated sugar instead of honey for that added sweetness.
  • Garnish with a lime slice (or lemon slice) and a fresh mint sprig.
  • You can pour the watermelonade straight into a glass with ice. However, you may also like to strain it first for a smoother finish.
  • If you seek an alcoholic watermelonade, add an ounce of vodka or tequila to your glass and give it a good stir before enjoying it. The perfect summer cocktail!

  1. Christy, I totally identify with you about your boy 🙂 My oldest went off to college last fall, and this year my youngest starts college too. I am thrilled, but at the same time wanting time to stand still. I am having to learn to trust the Lord like never before.

  2. I love watermelon but I too want mine with salt. I like the coarse kosher salt because of the crunch. You think it was hard watching him pull out the first time I totally agree with you. The next really hard time is when he pulls out with his car loaded down heading to college. Which I think every time they leave is hard but some harder than others. My daughter still texts me when she arrives somewhere and texts me again when she’s heading home (she’s 19) and yes she still does the same thing when she’s 6 hours away and leaves the college to go somewhere. The best part of it all is the fact she doesn’t mind because she understands it’s mam’s love for her that causes me to worry. She’s a great girl, makes great choices but I still worry! Brady is a great kid because he has great parents and was raised in a loving home.

    1. I am sure we will never quit worrying Marsha. I know that day of him leaving for college is sneaking up on me, I have tried not to think too much about it just yet and enjoy the moments I have before that one arrives and hits me full-force.

  3. Christy, I laughed when I read where you didn’t take your makeup off until 8:30…I do the same thing! I wait until I think it’s safe, lol! And no, that’s not being vain, in my case, I just call it doing the world a favor 😀

    1. I’m sorry, I’ve never understood the makeup thing. Maybe you can help me understand. I don’t mean to be a downer, but if you are a believer, don’t you believe that God made you ladies the way He wanted you? Do you honestly think He made you so ugly, that you have to “improve” on His work, so that other people will approve of you? If you see someone in the grocery store with a fresh-scrubbed, natural face and a sweet spirit and smile, do you judge her and think, “wow, she would look better with makeup on” ? It is hard for me to see it as anything other than a pride issue. The people who love you, love the REAL you, with or without makeup. Why would you spend time every day worrying about whether you look “acceptable” to people who shouldn’t be judging you anyway? God sees you clearly, your family sees you clearly, and they love you the way you are. Why isn’t the way God made you, enough? I feel sorry for women whose mothers taught them they MUST wear makeup to be seen in public. Be happy with – and proud of – the way God made you! Your cheerful spirit, love, and kindness toward others says much more about you than the way you look. I say, life is too short to spend some of my precious minutes every day on makeup… there are too many other things I want to do!

      1. Okay, wow, first of all, thank you for your honesty and I will try to explain but I think the first thing I need to tell you is that I see where your thinking is and where you are coming from and understand what you are saying as well as the sincerity and well meaning in your words and thoughts. However, its kinda like your thoughts are here, and mine are in another country. The way you are looking at why I wear makeup is nowhere even close to my actual reasons or thoughts behind it.
I have never judged others based on something like that, and never would. I don’t know anyone who does. That was kind of shocking to even read. I don’t see myself or anyone else as ugly and I don’t for a second think God sees me as ugly or anyone else. If they did, that’s their thing, not mine. I don’t do it out of pride or for anyone else, I don’t do it for my family or to get people to love me or on and on.

I think this is the best way to explain it: For me, putting on makeup is as much a part of getting ready for the day as taking a shower and getting dressed. I wouldn’t think of forgoing bathing or putting on clothes and wearing makeup feels just as natural and as much a part of getting ready as those things. I enjoy the time I have putting on my makeup. I usually pull up a video or listen to a podcast and its just part of my “me” time and I can do it from start to finish in five minutes. If I’m taking my time, ten.
I’m really not sure if I can explain it in a way that you can truly understand my point of view but that is mainly because we are just on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to this issue. It’s just like brushing my hair. Would you go out with your hair all matted and tangled? No, because mostly you just feel better when it’s brushed. I just do makeup for me. I hope I helped you understand in a small way and if not, I just appreciate you still being here and loving me despite what you may see as a character flaw. God’s working on all of us and many of us are blessed with the good sense to work with Him. It’s just that when he works with me, half the time I’m wearing mascara 🙂

(and if you could see how I look right now, sitting out in a public coffee shop waiting on my son to get finished with a class, you would definitely not accuse me of pride, lol)

      2. Lisa, have you ever gotten a haircut? Do you wear nice clothes or burlap sacks just to cover up? If so, “Do you honestly think He made you so ugly, that you have to “improve” on His work, so that other people will approve of you?” To assume that wearing make-up is nothing but vanity is extremely narrow-minded.

  4. This is also a great recipe for making watermelon pops in the freezer. It’s the same recipe only you fill up your pop molds and freeze, mmmmm good. I love it as a treat in the evening.

I’m one of your ‘older’ readers; some of my grandchildren are older than your children. Doesn’t matter how old they get, doesn’t matter how well you’ve ‘let go’ and know they are now adults and on their own, you’re still the Mom. You still worry, pray, and inside keep vigilant. I was a happy mom when facebook came out and since my children/grandchildren all live in different states, I now get to keep up with them on a daily basis. It’s wonderful.

Hang in the Mama, you’re doing great.

  5. Christy , I have 4 boys and 1 girl , ages 29 ,25,22,19, and my baby ,10 . I’ve been through the driving thing 4 times and it never gets easier . My baby girl got married last year and moved out , luckily close by . The 19 year old moved in with friends right down the road from us last week . My 2 oldest boys ,and of course the 10 year old , still live at home . If it were up to me , they would all live here forever , but like you said , you gotta let them grow up . I have been really lucky to still have them all close . No matter what’s going on in there lives , on Christmas Eve they all come home and spend the night so we are all together Christmas morning . I think the day that doesn’t happen is going to be the toughest for me . Thank you for your wonderful words of wisdom and all the wonderful recipes .

  6. first your post had me getting teary eyed and now the lovely comments from everyone. My 19 year old daughter spent the night with my 23 year old daughter (who is just stating out on her own) last night and boy did the house seem empty last night!

  7. Boy, that watermelonade is fantastic! Thanks for the recipe……. Now I have to run to the store and stock up on watermelons!!!
