Creamy Chocolate Frosting with Cocoa Powder
This creamy chocolate frosting is made with cocoa powder, powdered sugar, butter, milk and vanilla, so there’s no chocolate to melt and nothing to cook. It mixes up in about 10 minutes, spreads smooth and silky, and makes enough to frost a pan of brownies, a one-layer cake or about 12 cupcakes.

A Quick Look At The Recipe
- Recipe Name: Creamy Chocolate Frosting
- Serves: 12
- Main Ingredients: confectioner's sugar, cocoa powder, butter, milk, vanilla extract
- Why You'll Love It: This creamy chocolate frosting recipe is so easy to make and tastes delicious spread on top of cakes and brownies.
It’s budget-friendly, family-approved and a whole lot better than the canned stuff. Folks take one look at it and expect store-bought, then they taste how buttery and chocolaty it is and do a double-take. My favorite thing to spread it on is a pan of big batch brownies with chocolate frosting.
How do you make chocolate frosting with cocoa powder?
Beat 1 stick of softened butter with 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2/3 cup of cocoa powder and 2 tablespoons of milk until there are no lumps. It will be thick. Then add the remaining 2 cups of powdered sugar, 4 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and beat until smooth and creamy.
Why This Chocolate Frosting Turns Out So Smooth
Cocoa powder clumps easily, so the frosting gets mixed in two stages. The butter, cocoa, one cup of the powdered sugar and just two tablespoons of milk get beaten together first. It starts out lumpy and very thick, but stick with it and it turns smooth, which works the cocoa lumps out before you add the rest of the sugar and milk.
The kind of cocoa you use changes the flavor. Regular unsweetened cocoa gives you a classic milk chocolate frosting, and Dutch process cocoa makes it darker and richer, more like a dark chocolate buttercream.
Ingredients for Chocolate Frosting with Cocoa Powder

- Butter: It needs to be truly softened at room temperature. Cold butter leaves little lumps that never fully beat out.
- Cocoa powder: Regular unsweetened or Dutch process both work, so pick the flavor you like best.
- Milk: Add it a little at a time. More milk loosens the frosting for a smoother spread on cupcakes.
You’ll find the exact amounts in the recipe card below. If you use unsalted butter, taste the frosting at the end, since a pinch of salt makes the chocolate flavor pop.
Helpful Tips Before You Start
- Make sure your cake, cupcakes or brownies are completely cool before frosting, or the butter will melt and the frosting will slide.
- I’ll confess I don’t always hunt for a tablespoon. Three capfuls from the milk jug comes out to about two tablespoons, though measuring is the more accurate way to go.
- If the frosting is too thick, beat in milk a teaspoon at a time. If it’s too thin, add powdered sugar a tablespoon at a time.

What to Frost with Chocolate Frosting
Spread it over an easy birthday cake from scratch for a classic yellow and chocolate combination, or swirl it on a batch of cake mix cupcakes when you need a quick party treat. It’s also wonderful on a simple vanilla cake or a moist chocolate zucchini cake, and spread over a chocolate depression cake it turns a simple pantry cake into a double-chocolate dessert.
The frosting keeps in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for up to three months. Let it thaw in the fridge, then beat it for a few seconds to fluff it back up before spreading.
Chocolate Frosting FAQs
What’s the difference between chocolate frosting and chocolate icing?
It comes down to thickness. Icing is thinner and usually poured or drizzled like a glaze, while frosting like this one is thick and fluffy thanks to the butter, so it spreads and holds its shape.
Why is my chocolate frosting lumpy?
Usually the butter was too cold or the cocoa went in all at once. Beating the cocoa with just part of the sugar and milk first, like this recipe does, works the lumps out before the frosting gets too stiff.
How much does this frosting cover?
It frosts about 12 cupcakes, the top of a one-layer 9×13-inch cake or a full pan of brownies. Double it for a two-layer cake.

your kitties are so cute! almost as cute as your babies well not that cats are ever as exactly as cute as humans but you should get my drift. You should do a catbook on facebook.
back to the actual subject- I looooooove chocolate icing and will have to try this.
Oooh a cat book????????????/
Thank you for mentally cuddling my kitties along with me!!! I just love them to bits and pieces, I can’t help it!!
I actually wasn’t a “cat person” before I had them but they suck you in with their cuteness!!!!
sending you an invite now. Our cats can be facebook friends too lol.
I, too, am guilty of loving that bad-for-you, store-bought icing. BUT… I will definitely try this! Thanks.
I promise promise promise that if you like store bought and try this, you’ll be officially converted. Honest!!!
But really, no shame in store bought. Whatever cranks your tractor!
You’ll find no “homemade” police on Southern Plate!
This is awesome! I’ll go ahead and admit it … you’ll probably never ever get me to cook an icing, but this I can handle. Thanks!
Am glad that you had such a great time in LA! My husband went with me on a business trip a couple of summers ago … it was gorgeous and the weather was absolutely beautiful.
Yeah, now I want to go back and take my family!!!!!
I hope you get to make this good, its awful. Just eat it with a spoon like Jan plans on doing…She’s a smart gal!!!
Gratefully,
Christy
Yummo! Chocolate icing! Who needs a cake to enjoy chocolate icing! I just might have to make this for dessert tonight! ~hangs head in shame~ ok, maybe I’ll make a cake to go with it!
Thanks, Christy!
LOL
Jan, I LOVE YOU!!!
~still laughing~
Ooooh… chocolate… I allowed myself one piece of double chocolate cake last week for my birthday, but now it’s back on the straight and narrow.
BTW, what’s a zizzwheel?
Hmmm, I’m gonna have to think on the zizzwheel explanation. I reckon it would be kind of like the biggest, most major wheel that turns in your brain and you get REALLY happy and full of creativity when its in full force! Of course I just made that up…similar to the zizzwheel…
Christy, my Grandfather used to call that “Busy Brain”, it’s great when you get busy brain in the day time. But, oh it’s real bad to get “Busy Brain” at night. I get it at night time real bad now….Maybe that will help explain your zizzwheel force.
This is the easiest and yummiest frosting ever!! Thanks a million for sharing this recipe!!!
Trips are great, but isn’t it good to be home??
And this reminds me that I haven’t baked in a very long time!! So I should just go find something to whip up..
I haven’t tried to view the video of your hotel yet (I did have trouble with the 2 small videos in the one email..) but enjoyed seeing the pic of your shower!! Wow, I’ve been married for 25 yrs and still would NOT be happy in that! I would definately have to “steam it up good” first for SURE! Actually, soaping it up then steaming..ooohh I know, SHAVING CREAM ALL OVER THE DOOR!! That would work!!
Laura
Oh you are so right. I loved every second of California but Alabama is the most gorgeous sight I’ve ever laid eyes on!
You are soooooooooo funny! I thought about soaping it up, too!!!!!!
I am still laughing over all you wrote! lol
Welcome back, Bama girl. As I saw the pic of the clear shower wall, I had a funny thought..What if you had taken a friend with you to share the room?!!! THAT wooda been funny, doncha think? I think Laura is right on… smearing shaving cream on the glass, even yo mama would’ve asked you to do that.
The icing looks divine, maybe when honey gets back from his trip, he will get a cake. Those kids are too cute (loved the Kraft tee) and kitties bowling made me smile. A BIG thank you for posting the choc. pecan recipe last wk. You rock!
mmmm…chocolate! Let the kids know their cakes look WONDERFUL – and yummy! 🙂
Glad to have you back, but I adored your videos – and chance to hear your lovely Southern accent. 🙂
HEY!!! Thank you so much!!! A few folks on facebook have said I don’t sound as Southern as they thought so now I’m worried that I’ve become too worldly! ~giggle~
