Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?

When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…

And put a bowl in front of her.

Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…

And add a pat of butter.

And a sprinkling of sugar.

And give it a good stir.

And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.

Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.

It sure was good.

Did you eat this when you were little?

Was there some other comfort food that you remember along these lines? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

  1. Any time I am fixing rice I always make sure I keep some out just so I can have it with butter and sugar. I also usually add a little bit of milk to it. I love it and could eat it every day!! I don’t understand anyone who wouldn’t like this do ya’ll??? Or maybe we are the strange ones and just don’t know it? LOL

  2. Another classic southern meal I enjoyed as a child and still do today fresh lima beans and dumplings made from scratch…wow I need to call my mama 🙂

  3. Oh my does this ever bring back memories! I will have to make some soon! I get funny looks when I ask people if they have ever eaten this. I thought it was something special that my Mom just made up.

  4. The one thing we always knew we would be eating for breakfast when visiting my grandmother. I still eat it today but I add a little milk 😉

  5. My Mom used to make this for my cousin and herself because I was a picky kid & wouldn’t eat rice at all! She also added a little milk to it (like oatmeal) for breakfast. Now that I’m older I love rice and have it every chance I get!!

      1. I had it with brown sugar and cinnamon added with butter, yum! I think I’ll make rice tonight.

  6. Oh my goodness! My mom and grandma used to make this for me with “fried bread” (Bisquick + milk, fried). It is soo good. I’m married to a Puerto Rican now, and make rice for most meals. Every once in a while, I’ll also have some for dessert. He thinks I’m psychotic. 😉

    1. My husband thinks I’m psychotic too, but he knows I’m must crazy enough to keep life fun 🙂
I once had a neighbor who was Korean. She had rice at just about every meal. One night, after we had eaten supper there, I took a little leftover rice, added butter and sugar, and dug in. She looked at me like I’d grown two heads! lol
