Fun Variations to Try

- Cheesy Variation: Top the beef with a layer of shredded cheddar cheese or parmesan for a cheesy twist on this classic dish.
- Alternative Proteins: Swap out the beef with any other ground meat. Ground turkey or pork would taste just as great. Or just make my Chicken Tater Tot Casserole!

How to Make My Beef Tater Tot Casserole Recipe
- To start, brown your ground beef and onion together in a large skillet. Once done, drain off any grease.

Tip: I like to brown my beef ahead of time and keep it in the freezer to make meals like this so it’s a breeze to put together! It also saves you from having to drain everything!

2. Next, place the ground beef mixture in the bottom of an 8×8 baking dish.

3. Then in a single layer, top with the frozen tater tots.

In a small bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup and milk. Then pour this over the tater tots.
Note: The mixture will still be lumpy but as long as you put forth the effort to give it a good stir it’ll be fine.

Now cover your baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.
Tip: A lot of recipes don’t have you covering your casserole. I used to do mine that way, but I’ve found it is even better if you cover it up a bit. If you’d like your tater tots nice and golden brown, uncover for the last 10 minutes of cooking.

Serve and enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. You can assemble the casserole and refrigerate it, then bake it when you’re ready to serve. Adjust the baking time accordingly.
Consider pairing it with a fresh salad like my Quick & Easy Greek Salad. It would also taste great with some Fresh Green Beans, or a side of garlic bread for a well-rounded meal. If you make homemade garlic bread, try my Zesty Garlic Bread Seasoning!
Covering the casserole helps to retain moisture and prevent the tater tots from drying out. It’s recommended for best results.

Storage
If you have any leftovers, this tastes even better reheated! Store casserole leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheat quickly in the oven to make crispy tater tots again. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before reheating in the oven.

Christy, as usual, you are right on the mark about letting blessings pass while circling the moutain. Thanks!
Now on to your recipe; a favorite in this household. I make mine a little different but it’s very similar. I mix cream of chicken soup (my family hates anything with mushrooms; don’t know what they are missing) and 1 cup of sour cream mixed together and layered on top of the ground beef mixture then a heaping 1-2 cups grated cheese then the tater tots on the very top. I love mine with some ketchup squirted on top when it’s all hot and toasty brown.
My nephew is visiting us and he was explaining this casserole to my daughters, who at 16 and 18 had never heard of it let alone tried it. I actually bought the ingredients yesterday to make it this week and then there came your post. Must be meant to be. If Christy says so, I must make it.
I love this casserole!! I add a bag of liptons seasoning to the ground beef and it gives it such flavor:) I think I am going to have to make this now….
Have a great day!!
Love the idea of the seasoning packet! I use it on my pork roast in the crock pot but I usually just use garlic salt on my tater tot casserole…I will certainly try your way next!! Thanks!
Christy, if you ever get tired of doing your cooking gig, you should write a book!! Love reading your material!! You are a VERY talented lady ! And mostly—I LOVE how you LOVE your family!!! That is why it is sooooooooooo “BOUNTIFUL” !!
Amen!
Hey, I remember this casserole from a long while ago. It’s been a looong time since I made it. Not sure if it ws exactly like this tho. Guess I should try it again. Christy, sorry you didn’t find the planters. Maybe when you least expect it you’ll run up on some. Have you been out to Athens to “Fancy Plants”? I haven’t been yet, but want to go check it out. Don’t know if they have any planters. It may be just plants. It’s in an octagonal shaped building a little bit before you get to the Publix on Hwy 72, on the right. HEY, when you come out to have lunch with me ( know your busy, but still looking forward to that) you can stop by there! I have something for you ( ok, don’t get too excited, it’s no biggie) and I’m not gonna send it to you. I want to give it to you in person. So you just let me know when you might can squeeze that in. Oh, and I got something I’d like to talk to you about. A “show” type thing you might could do here in Athens. Fill you in on our “lunch date”. Love ya, girlie.
I needed your sermon too. It spoke so much to me. I’ve been circling. But no longer! I have been feeling just like you were talking but I have too many blessing in my life to circle an old mountain. I think the Good Lord has given you more than the gift of cooking. You minister to folks and make their lives sweeter. Thank you for being willing to let Him take you out “there”. You make us Southeners proud. 🙂
Christy, I loved your post today. I too roamed all over, getting testy with everyone, looking for 2 window boxes. It took a few years, but guess what? I didn’t want them when I got them. DUH!!! We have tater tot casserole but use 2 cans cream of chicken soup and no milk. Since there’s only my husband and I, I halve the recipe. Variations: Add chopped onion, celery, last night’s leftover veggies and cheese. The next time I make it I’m going to serve it with your sweet and sour green beans.
