How to Make My Beef Tater Tot Casserole Recipe
- To start, brown your ground beef and onion together in a large skillet. Once done, drain off any grease.

Tip: I like to brown my beef ahead of time and keep it in the freezer to make meals like this so it’s a breeze to put together! It also saves you from having to drain everything!

2. Next, place the ground beef mixture in the bottom of an 8×8 baking dish.

3. Then in a single layer, top with the frozen tater tots.

In a small bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup and milk. Then pour this over the tater tots.
Note: The mixture will still be lumpy but as long as you put forth the effort to give it a good stir it’ll be fine.

Now cover your baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.
Tip: A lot of recipes don’t have you covering your casserole. I used to do mine that way, but I’ve found it is even better if you cover it up a bit. If you’d like your tater tots nice and golden brown, uncover for the last 10 minutes of cooking.

Serve and enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. You can assemble the casserole and refrigerate it, then bake it when you’re ready to serve. Adjust the baking time accordingly.
Consider pairing it with a fresh salad like my Quick & Easy Greek Salad. It would also taste great with some Fresh Green Beans, or a side of garlic bread for a well-rounded meal. If you make homemade garlic bread, try my Zesty Garlic Bread Seasoning!
Covering the casserole helps to retain moisture and prevent the tater tots from drying out. It’s recommended for best results.

Storage
If you have any leftovers, this tastes even better reheated! Store casserole leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheat quickly in the oven to make crispy tater tots again. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before reheating in the oven.

Haven’t tried this yet but definately will. Changing subjecs but I have a question for you. Bought my granddaughter a Easy Bake oven for Christmas, wondering if you have any recipes for mixes to make instead of the prepackaged ones that are quite expensive and really don’t taste that great? BYW I love reading your post & trying all the recipes.
This is to Cathy, I have a pdf file that has easy bake oven recipes in it. E-mail me at momto3plus1 at comcast dot net and I will send it on over to you. Also you can do a google search for homemade Easy Bake oven recipes and get a ton of hits! Hope this helps, even if I am not Christy!
Great post during this Christmas season as many of us hardheaded folks have exactly in our minds what we want to give someone. Last year I hunted high and low for a specific gift for my sister. Never found it, but I wasted lots of time and stress concerning it. Most people are just happy for the thought. Praying not to circle the mountians this year. Thanks for the great word. I also make this casserole with frozen peason top of the meat, and I just use ground round or chuck and press it into the casserole dish, add peas, onions, top with tots and cream of something soup(any kind will do). Of course it has to cook longer but it is delish!!!
I hope you don’t circle the mountain this year too Loretta!!
You ain’t got a thing here until you slap some Velveeta cheese on top of those tater tots!!!
I make a similar version of this. I brown my beef with onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms and cover that mixture with the soup. I line the top of that with tater tots in even little rows and bake. Once it’s done I add sharp cheddar and bake some more. Perfect casserole for assemblying ahead of time, for when family is in town, to give away, or for times when your busy cooking a mess of other food.
LOVE Tator Tot Casserole! In my family, we mix the “cream of” soup (mushroom, or sometimes a mixture of mushroom and celery) and french style green beans all together and then line up the tator tots on top of that. Sometimes we’ll add cheese before the tator tots, sometimes not. Always bake uncovered to get crispy tots! Yum!!!!!!
I make it for my family as well, but a little differently… I’m sooooo addicted to cheese, you know my version has plenty!!
1 pound of ground beef
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
An envelope of beefy onion soup mix
Tator Tots
Grated cheddar cheese
-brown the ground beef
-in a bowl mix the two soups
-add the ground beef to the soup mixture
-layer the tator tots in a casserole dish (1 layer)
-spread the beef/soup mix on top of the tator tots
-sprinkle grated chedder cheese on top
-cover with aluminum foil
-bake between 375 and 400 for about 30 min
-it won’t be really bubbly on the sides but its just a little to know its done cooking
-then take the aluminum foil off for the cheese to finish melting
NEVER any left over!!! 🙂
Well, I just wanted to say that this recipe turned out fantastic! My 3 year old refused to try it (being a casserole) until I bribed her with a pint sized glass of iced sweet tea. I told her that if she will just take one bite, then she can have some sweet tea, works every time. The end result was her having 2 helpings and singing during dinner about how good this is. Thanks a bunch!
I am so glad to hear it was a hit!! Even if you did have to bribe her.
