How to Make My Beef Tater Tot Casserole Recipe
- To start, brown your ground beef and onion together in a large skillet. Once done, drain off any grease.

Tip: I like to brown my beef ahead of time and keep it in the freezer to make meals like this so it’s a breeze to put together! It also saves you from having to drain everything!

2. Next, place the ground beef mixture in the bottom of an 8×8 baking dish.

3. Then in a single layer, top with the frozen tater tots.

In a small bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup and milk. Then pour this over the tater tots.
Note: The mixture will still be lumpy but as long as you put forth the effort to give it a good stir it’ll be fine.

Now cover your baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.
Tip: A lot of recipes don’t have you covering your casserole. I used to do mine that way, but I’ve found it is even better if you cover it up a bit. If you’d like your tater tots nice and golden brown, uncover for the last 10 minutes of cooking.

Serve and enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. You can assemble the casserole and refrigerate it, then bake it when you’re ready to serve. Adjust the baking time accordingly.
Consider pairing it with a fresh salad like my Quick & Easy Greek Salad. It would also taste great with some Fresh Green Beans, or a side of garlic bread for a well-rounded meal. If you make homemade garlic bread, try my Zesty Garlic Bread Seasoning!
Covering the casserole helps to retain moisture and prevent the tater tots from drying out. It’s recommended for best results.

Storage
If you have any leftovers, this tastes even better reheated! Store casserole leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheat quickly in the oven to make crispy tater tots again. You can also freeze leftovers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before reheating in the oven.

Oh, I love this casserole. My mother made this when I was a kid, but we do it a little differently. We layer the hamburger onion mixture on the bottom, add a bag of frozen mixed veggies mixed with the soup as the next layer, then top it with the tater tots. It works well with hash browns, too.
Of course, nowadays I know this is a cheap and easy version of shephard’s pie, but when we were kids we didn’t know what it was called. Whenever we wanted mama to make it for supper we asked for “that one stuff” LOL She always knew what we meant.
To this day we still call it “that one stuff” LOL
LOL, I love the name you had for it Karen.
I grew up with a different style of tot casserole. Basically you make your mixture up as if making a meatloaf but press it out on the bottom and up the sides of a 9×9 pan (this is uncooked) then add a undiluted can of cream of mushroom soup (I hate mushrooms and my mom knew that so as an adult now I use chix or celery!) then frozen tots on top of the soup mix and cook at 350 for about 45-60 min. However my husband is from west Virginia and he likes his similar to the recipe above but we only do this once or twice a year…….deep fry the tots then we cook the meat mixture mix in cream cheese and soup (undiluted) then make it in layers like a lasagna so meat/tots/meat/shredded cheese /tots……and just repeat layers to the top ending with tots of course cook about 15-20 mins till cheese has melted and then eat the fattening mess!!!!! As you can see why we do this 1-2 times a year
sounds so good
Tator tot casserole is one of my favorite comfort foods. I make it with mixed vegetables, but find it helps to defrost them first. Then I mix everything in the pan (except the tator tots) until warm using two cans of soup. It takes less time to bake doing it this way. At the end I sprinkle a cup of grated cheese over the top. Love this!
I’ve never made a Tater Tot Casserole because I ALWAYS thought it didn’t sound good. But now you have convinced me! Christy, I will be making this soon!
We’ve been making this casserole for years and years….except we brown the beef with the onions, add cream of mushroom soup, mixed vegetables, milk & pepper. Pour in 9 x 13 baking dish & top with tater tots. Bake for about 1 hour @ 350 degrees. Delish! (but, I always have room for Christy Jordan recipes! 😉 )
If you and I reverse our paths, we’ll run smack-dab into each other!
Has anyone tried this with sausage instead of ground beef? Sounds like a winner either way. And Cathy, I would love to give my granddaughter an easy bake oven for Christmas if not for those darn little packages you have to buy.
Judy, I mix a package of breakfast sausage we got from having a pig butchered, along with a package of hamburger. Also done straight sausage and both are just as yummy!
