Spoonful of broccoli and bacon salad.

This broccoli salad with bacon is a favorite of mine. It’s so simple to make but tastes so unbelievably good. It’s filled with crunchy raw broccoli, crispy and crumbly bacon, raisins, sunflower seeds, and red onion. These sensational ingredients are coated in a dressing made from mayonnaise, vinegar, and sugar. Yep, it’s a flavor and textural explosion that no one will be able to resist.

One of the best parts is that it’s so quick and easy to make, so it’s the perfect salad to make ahead and store in the fridge when you have friends or family over or if you’re heading to a potluck. You just have to cook the bacon, chop the broccoli, and mix the dressing ingredients. Combine and your bacon broccoli salad recipe is ready to roll!

Recipe Notes

  • Feel free to substitute the vinegar for apple cider vinegar.
  • Think it’s not a salad without cheese? Feel free to add a cup of shredded cheddar cheese or a 1/4 cup of goat cheese to this broccoli salad with bacon. I won’t tell!
  • Here are some fun substitutions:
    • Swap the sunflower seeds for sliced almonds, pine nuts, chopped pecans, or chopped walnuts.
    • Substitute the raisins for dried cranberries, dried blueberries, or dried cherries (or a combination).
    • If you’re wanting to go meat-free, substitute the bacon for sundried tomatoes or olives.
    • To go dairy-free, you’ll just need to use vegan mayonnaise.
  • Insider’s tip: if you prefer your salad had a milder onion flavor, soak the chopped onions in ice water for 10 minutes. It removes the onion’s “bite” so to speak.
  • Serve your broccoli bacon salad by itself or alongside a simple main dish like butter roasted chicken, hamburger steaks, or grilled chicken tenderloins.

  1. I love broccoli salad! I use dried cranberries like the other reader mentioned. And I’ve been adding a little bit of mini shell pasta too. I could eat a ton of it.

  3. I have had this same kind of salad, but we used Cucumber Ranch dressing for it instead of the mayonnaise mixture. It’s really good that way too and quick and easy. Thanks for all the step-by-step directions. They help me want to cook more than just seeing a recipe.

  4. This is one of my most favorite salads and is a hit anytime I make it! I’ve made it just like your recipe, as well as another way that I thought that I’d share! Instead of raisins, try using died cranberries, and in place of the homemade dressing, use Kraft Creamy Poppyseed dressing. This second way does make it a little more expensive, but is definitely delicious as well! Either way you make it your in for a treat! 🙂

  5. Loved the rhyme, Christy, and the ingredients are on my list for a trip to the store tomorrow. I’m not sure what I’ll put in the basket to equal “4-5 chopped broccoli,” so I’m asking for some help. Is this bunches? Cups? Handsful? Betcha you’ll even be able to rhyme the answer. =-)

  6. A lady at work use to make this salad and I really liked it but never at a recipe for it. Now I do. Loved your rhyming.

  7. I made this for Easter and it was a HUGE hit!! Absolutely delish! I left out the bacon and added some shredded cheese. Yummy! There is a restaurant in Bell Buckle, TN (if you ever get out this way… go there!) that serves a salad similar to this and this is the closest recipe i have ever had! Thank you so much for sharing (and making ME look like a good cook)! 🙂
